Le mois dernier la 15e édition du Festival Lumière est arrivée à Lyon, un festival de cinéma accueilli par la métropole de Lyon. Pendant une semaine chaque année, la ville est remplie de cinéma international. Cette année, l’invité principal était Wim Wenders, le célèbre réalisateur allemand qui a réalisé Paris, Texas et Les Ailes du désir. Les invités précédents ont été Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodovar, et Francis Ford Coppola. Pendant le festival, j’ai assisté aux projections d’It happened one night de Frank Capra, considéré comme le film fondateur de la comédie romantique, La Bête humaine, réalisé par Jean Renoir en 1938, et Vivement Dimanche, le dernier film de Francois Truffaut, mon réalisateur préféré de la nouvelle vague. C’était une expérience formidable de regarder ces films classiques sur grand écran surtout parce que le cinéma français a joué un rôle fondamental dans ma compréhension de la culture française.

Mais pourquoi un si grand festival à Lyon? Parce que les frères Lumière, les fondateurs du cinématographe et les réalisateurs du premier film, viennent de Lyon. Le premier film est sorti en 1895 et s’appelle La Sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyon. Aujourd’hui on peut visiter leur maison et les vestiges de l’usine où ce premier film a été réalisé. Grâce à l’influence des frères Lumière et aujourd’hui l’Institut Lumière qui conserve leur héritage, Lyon est une ville pleine de cinémas de quartier. Pas loin de chez moi il y a un magnifique cinéma Art déco, le cinéma Saint-Denis, qui est géré exclusivement par des bénévoles. Le cinéma est bien vivant à Lyon, et j’ai pu en profiter!

Last month the 15th edition of the Festival Lumière arrived in Lyon, a film festival hosted by the city of Lyon. Over the period of a week each year, the city is taken over by international cinema. This year, the main guest was Wim Wenders, the famous German director who made Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire. Previous guests have been Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodovar, and Francis Ford Coppola. During the festival I went to screenings of It happened one night by Frank Capra, which is considered to be the founding film of the “romcom” genre, La Bête humaine, made by Jean Renoir in 1938, and Vivement Dimanche, the last film directed by Francois Truffaut, my favourite filmmaker of

the French New Wave. It was a great experience to see these classic films on the big screen especially seeing that French cinema has played a fundamental part in my understanding and education of French culture.

But why such a big festival in Lyon? Because the Lumière brothers, the founders of the cinématographe and the directors of the first film, come from Lyon. The first film came out in 1895 and is called Workers leaving the Lumière factory in Lyon. Today we can visit their house and the remnants of the factory where this first film was created. Thanks to the influence of the Lumière brothers and today the Lumière Institute which protects their legacy, Lyon is full of neighbourhood and independent cinemas. Around the corner from my house there is a beautiful art deco cinema, le cinéma Saint-Denis, which is managed exclusively by volunteers. Cinema is alive and kicking in Lyon, and I have been able to make the most of it!

Re-bonjour de Paris !

Le temps passe vraiment vite ici à Paris car j’en suis maintenant à mon 4ème mois ici et je vais bientôt commencer mon dernier mois ici après la nouvelle année. Les dernières semaines, à l’approche de Noël, ont été vraiment passionnantes car l’ambiance de Noël s’est développée dans tout Paris. J’ai donc pensé que dans cette mise à jour mensuelle, je vous parlerais de certains de mes endroits préférés à Paris où je suis allée pendant cette période de Noël.

À commencer par la Place Vendôme, une place abritant diverses boutiques de marques telles que Louis Vuitton et Gucci ainsi que le célèbre hôtel Ritz. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la photo ci-dessous, la place est couverte d’arbres de Noël pleins de lumières et lorsque le soleil se couche, qui est le meilleur moment pour ressentir toute l’atmosphère, la région est magnifique et tellement magique.

Deuxièmement, juste en bas de la place Vendôme, vous trouverez l’un des marchés de Noël les plus populaires de Paris, situé dans les jardins des Tuileries. Chaque fois que je suis allée chez eux, ils étaient remplis de gens visitant les stands, rencontrant des amis et profitant de l’atmosphère enjoué. Il y a une large gamme de stands de nourriture ici, comme de la raclette et de la tartiflette, mais aussi de nombreux stands vendant des articles artisanaux tels que des savons, des figurines de Noël en bois pour les crèches et des bijoux.

Enfin, en me promenant et en voyageant dans Paris le mois dernier, j’ai découvert la quantité de lumières de Noël qu’ils ont partout dans la ville. À chaque arrêt de la ligne de métro, lorsque vous descendez, vous verrez des lumières de Noël suspendues au-dessus des rues. Les Champs Élysées et l’Avenue Montaigne semblent avoir le plus de lumières et je recommanderais à tous ceux qui sont ici à Noël de se promener dans ces rues, vous ne serez pas déçu !

Hello again from Paris!

Time is absolutely flying by here in Paris as I am now in my 4th month here and will soon be starting my final month here after the New Year. The last few weeks, with it getting closer to Christmas, have been exciting as the Christmas atmosphere has been growing throughout Paris. So, I thought in this monthly update I would tell you about some of my favourite places in Paris that I have been to this Christmas time.

Starting off with Place Vendôme, a square home to various designer shops such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci and the infamous Ritz Hotel. As you can see in the photo below, the square is covered in Christmas trees full of lights and when the sun has set, which is the best time to feel the full atmosphere, the area looks beautiful and so magical.

Secondly, just down the road from Place Vendôme, you can find one of, but the most popular, Christmas markets in Paris situated in the Tuileries Gardens. Every time I have gone to them, they have been full of people visiting the stalls, meeting friends, and enjoying the upbeat atmosphere. There is a big range of food stalls here, such as raclette and tartiflette being on offer but also many stalls selling handmade items such as soaps, wooden Christmas figures for nativity scenes and jewellery.

Lastly, from walking and travelling through Paris this past month, I have discovered the sheer amount of Christmas lights that they have all over the city. In every stop on the metro line, when you exit you will see Christmas lights hanging over the streets. Champs Élysées and Avenue Montaigne seem to have the most lights and I would recommend to anyone who is here at Christmas going for a stroll down these streets, you will not be disappointed!

我最喜歡的台灣文化：夜市

我在台灣的時候，我非常喜歡的文化是夜市跟它的美食。夜市的食物又便宜又好吃。

所以我要給考慮去台灣旅行的人推薦夜市。

台灣哪裡的城市都有幾個夜市。可以買衣服，飲料，跟食物（小吃）。因為原來的夜市是賣食物給民工的地方，現在也很便宜。我在台灣的時候吃了很多夜市的東西，所以我要介紹幾個我最喜歡的。

 

第一個是：地瓜球！地瓜球是用地瓜粉作的小小炸物。可以吃有梅子粉的甜甜的，還有有胡椒的鹹的。我怎麼樣的都很喜歡，但是特別喜歡梅子粉的或者糖粉的。口感也非常好。

還一個是：雞排。雞排是雞肉，可能是台灣最有名的小吃。我覺得台灣的雞排比其他國家的炸雞很好吃，因為又脆脆又很大。去台灣的外國人一定應該吃。我最喜歡的雞排口味是大蒜，但是這個大蒜的口味很強，所以應該小心一點。

 

第三個是：百頁豆腐。這個豆腐也是炸物，我去夜市的時候一定想要吃這個，因為口感太好了。很多英國人認為豆腐完全沒有味道，所以不好吃。但是這個想法並不對，其實非常好吃。我最喜歡胡椒味的百頁豆腐。

 

還有一個豆腐是：台灣名品臭豆腐。臭豆腐很臭，如果附近有人賣臭豆腐，若果你不看也會知道，因為非常臭。臭得我沒吃過它，但是很多台灣人說很香。

最後一個是：果汁！我跟我室友們都很喜歡台灣的果汁因為非常新鮮。什麼果汁都喝得到。我朋友喜歡木瓜汁，但是我喜歡西瓜汁。可以加糖，但是我覺得不加糖最好吃，也比較健康。

如果你打算去台灣，你一定要去夜市吃小吃。台北的最有名的夜市是饒河街觀光夜市，士林夜市跟師大夜市，但是小的夜市也好吃。

 

My Favourite Part of Taiwanese Culture: Night Markets

 

In Taiwan, my favourite part of the culture was the night markets and their food, which is both cheap and tasty. I would definitely recommend them to anyone considering visiting Taiwan.

Every city in Taiwan will have night markets, where you can buy clothing, food and drinks. Because the original night markets imported from China were aimed at migrant workers, they are historically cheap and remain so today. I ate quite a lot at these markets and so today I shall introduce a few classic foods.

The first food is sweet potato balls! They are small, deep-fried balls made from sweet potato starch, and you can eat them sweet (e.g. with plum powder) or savoury (e.g. with salt and pepper). I like them in all forms, but especially enjoy the plum powder ones or the ones with icing sugar on top. The texture is also wonderfully chewy.

Another food item is Jipai. Jipai is essentially a deep-fried chicken cutlet, and is likely Taiwan’s most famous snack food. In my opinion Jipai far outdoes fried chicken from any other country as it is so crispy, and also huge! Anyone visiting Taiwan should definitely check out this one. My favourite flavour would be the garlic one, but you do have to be careful as the garlic is incredibly intense.

The third must-eat street food is shutter bean curd. It is essentially small cubes of deep-fried (again) tofu, and it’s absolutely delicious – I get this every time I visit a night market. In the UK tofu is often thought of as completely tasteless, but in my opinion that’s actually far from the truth. This one is great with salt and pepper.

Another tofu to be found at the night market is stinky tofu. Like the name, it really does smell, and if there’s someone selling it nearby you’ll definitely smell it before you see it. It smells awful so I haven’t dared try it, but a lot of Taiwanese people have told me it tastes great despite the smell.

And last but not least, there’s the fruit juice. Me and my roommates loved the fruit juice as it is so fresh – they usually blend up the fruit in front of you, and you can basically have any fruit. My friends like the papaya juice, and personally I’m a big fan of the watermelon juice. There’s the option of adding sugar too, but personally I think it is better without (and healthier!).

If you are planning to visit Taiwan, the snacks at the night market are a must! The most famous markets in Taipei are Raohe Street Night Market, Shilin Night Market, and Shida Night Market, but even the smaller ones are great too.

Depuis que je sois arrivé à Paris, la cuisine française commença de me se montrer dans tous ses façons. C’est peut-être cliché de dire ça – et surtout prévisible – mais j’ai eu directement un coup de foudre pour cette culture de déjeuner. C’est incroyable de pouvoir prendre une heure, parfois presque deux, pour aller manger dans un resto avec des amis, colleagues, ou qui que ce soit.

C’était dans une de mes déjeuners que j’ai trouvé la resto “Lim Sept” à Belleville. Une entreprise familial où ils font des nouilles eux-mêmes. Mon plat préfère est les nouilles avec des aubergines.

Donc mes premieres experiences parisiennes se sont concentrées sur la bouffe, plus ou moins. Et sur le café. Malheureusement le café chez nous à l’Alliance Française n’est pas assez bien que la reste du service qu’ils offert. Je suis maintenant dans la troisième semaine de mon cours intensif et on a beaucoup appris déjà. Les trous dans ma connaissance de la langue commencent a s’exposer qui est tellement bien car qu’en voyant ces trous c’est possible de commencer à les fermer.

J’ai fait mon début social à la Connectable. Un bar incroyable où les conversations animées se mêlent aux rires et à la musique vibrante. La première soirée j’étais là, il y avait un photoshoot improvisé. C’est devenu le lieu idéal pour élargir mon cercle social et pratiquer le français de manière décontractée. Les rencontres au Connectable ont apporté une dimension humaine à mon expérience parisienne, rendant chaque soirée unique et mémorable. Entre les déjeuners chez Lim Sept, les cafés parisiens, et les soirées au bar, chaque jour devient une aventure, une exploration passionnante de la vie dans la Ville Lumière.

Since I’ve been in Paris, French cuisine has started to reveal itself to me in all its forms. It might be a bit cliché to say this—and especially predictable—but I immediately fell in love with this lunch culture. It’s incredible to be able to take an hour, sometimes almost two, to go eat in a restaurant with friends, colleagues, or whoever.

It was during one of my lunches that I found the restaurant “Lim Sept” in Belleville. A family-owned business where they make their own noodles. My favourite dish is noodles with aubergines.

So, my initial experiences in Paris focused on food, more or less. And coffee. Unfortunately, the coffee at our Alliance Française isn’t as good as the rest of the service they offer. I am now in the third week of my intensive course, and we have already learned a lot. The gaps in my language knowledge are beginning to expose themselves, which is great because by seeing these gaps, it’s possible to start closing them.

I made my social debut at the Connectable, too. An incredible bar where lively conversations blend with laughter and vibrant music. The first evening I was there, there was an impromptu photoshoot. It has become the perfect place to expand my social circle and practice French in a relaxed manner. Meetings at the Connectable have added a human dimension to my Parisian experience, making each evening unique and memorable. Between lunches at Lim Sept, Parisian cafes, and nights at the bar, each day becomes an adventure, an exciting exploration of life in the City of Light.

Ce mois-ci j’ai eu un horaire vraiment chargé! C’est la fin du trimestre, donc ça veut dire que j’ai beaucoup d’examens ainsi que des travaux à rendre. Tristement, ça veut également dire que mes amies qui sont en échange pour seulement cette session vont rentrer tantôt.

En plus, j’ai eu le plaisir d’accueillir une amie à Montréal pendant une semaine. C’était vraiment cool d’avoir l’opportunité d’être un touriste dans la ville avec elle, et aussi d’être un guide, en lui montrant mes quartiers préférés de la ville. Vu que c’est presque Noël, il y a plusieurs marchés de Noël, qu’on a visités, avec des kiosques qui vendaient des cadeaux et des créations artisanales. On était spécialement excité.e.s par les stands de nourriture, et l’on a goûté la tire d’érable là-bas. La tire d’érable est un mets délicat québécois, qui se mange pendant l’hiver, en particulier quand il neige. Il s’agit de sirop d’érable bouilli qui est gelé dans la neige qui goûte un peu comme une crème glacée à l’érable. Toutes les activités d’hiver sont maintenant ouvertes à Montréal donc on est également allé.e.s patiner, qui était la première fois pour mon amie. Bien que ça ait été sa première expérience, elle n’est pas tombée!

On a aussi eu la chance d’aller regarder un spectacle drag au Cabaret Mado. Le cabaret est bien connu au Canada (et même hors du pays!) pour un style de drag uniquement québécois. Cette nuit-là, le thème était Céline Dion, et les Reines ont rendu hommage à cette chanteuse canadienne!

Durant le trimestre, je travaillais dans un café étudiant à l’université. Cette expérience m’a vraiment aidé avec la confiance avec mon français oral. Pour célébrer la fin de la session, tous.tes les employé.e.s sont allé.e.s jouer une partie de bowling, qui était super fun et j’ai même réussi à faire un abat. J’ai vraiment hâte de continuer à travailler là-bas le trimestre prochain.

Il neigeait très fort au début du mois de décembre, qui a été un peu étonnant pour la ville (normalement, il neige plus tard dans l’année!). Pour moi par contre c’était génial et j’ai fait des randonnées au parc Mont-Royal pour en profiter. J’espère qu’on aura un Noël blanc.

I’ve had a really busy schedule this month! It’s the end of term, so that means I’ve got lots of exams and assignments to hand in. Sadly, it also means that my friends who are on exchange for this term only are going home soon.

I had the pleasure of welcoming a friend to Montreal for a week. It was really cool to have the opportunity to be a tourist in the city with her, and also to act as a guide, showing her my favourite areas of the city. As it’s almost Christmas, there are several Christmas markets, which we visited, with stalls selling gifts and crafts. We were especially excited by the food stalls, and tried the Tire d’érable there. Tire d’érable is a Quebec delicacy, eaten during the winter, especially when it snows. It’s boiled maple syrup that’s frozen in the snow and tastes a bit like maple ice cream. All the winter activities are now open in Montreal so we also went ice skating, which was my friend’s first time. But despite that she didn’t fall over!

We also had the chance to watch a drag show at Cabaret Mado. The cabaret is well known in Canada (and even outside of Canada!) for its uniquely Québécois style of drag. That evening, the theme was « Céline Dion », and the Queens paid tribute to the Canadian singer!

During term time, I worked in a student café at the university. This experience has really helped my confidence with my spoken French and also I now have some experience of having a job 100% in the French language. To celebrate the end of the session, all the staff went bowling, which was great fun and I even managed to get a strike. I’m really looking forward to continuing working there next term.

It snowed really hard at the beginning of December, which was a bit surprising for the city (it normally snows later in the year!) For me, though, it was great and I went hiking in Mount Royal Park to enjoy it. I’m really hoping we have a White Christmas.
