  • Max Jenkins: Abril – Pascua y Viajes | April – Easter and Travelling

    ¡Hola!

    Ahora he estado aquí por más de la mitad de mi estancia en Valencia, y me siento emocionado y nervioso al mismo tiempo. Se acercan mis exámenes en mayo y junio, y definitivamente ha aumentado mi carga de trabajo en la Universidad, por lo que estoy pasando mucho tiempo estudiando y preparándome. A pesar de esto, estoy emocionado por el desafío y por ver cuánto he avanzado desde que comencé mis estudios aquí.

     

     

     

    Fuera de la Universidad, me he divertido el mejor clima de la primavera, y me ha dado la oportunidad de disfrutar al máximo de actividades al aire libre, como correr por la mañana en el jardín del Turia y disfrutando la playa.

    Uno de los puntos destacados de las últimas semanas fue la Pascua. En España, esta se celebra a mayor escala que en el Reino Unido, así que tuve casi dos semanas libres, lo que me dio una gran oportunidad para visitar algún lugar nuevo en España. Pasé una semana en Alicante explorando las ciudades costeras de Jávea y Denia, y mi familia también vino a visitarme. Disfruté probando nuevos alimentos como el pulpo seco, una especialidad de la zona.

    También he comenzado un nuevo pasatiempo: Jiu-jitsu. Siempre me ha interesado las artes marciales, y cuando vi que un gimnasio local ofrecía clases, decidí probarlo. Ha sido una experiencia desafiante pero gratificante para aprender nuevas técnicas y mejorar. He asistido a clases de dos a tres veces cada semana durante un mes, y me gustaría continuarlo cuando regrese a inglaterra.

    Estas últimas semanas han estado ocupadas pero satisfactorias, y espero con ansias el resto de mi tiempo aquí en Valencia. Desde el exigente trabajo en la escuela hasta las numerosas actividades de ocio y exploración.

    Now that I have come up to halfway through my time in Valencia, I find myself feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. With my exams coming up in May and June, the workload at school has definitely increased, and I am spending a lot of time studying and preparing for them. However, I am also looking forward to the challenge, and to seeing how far I have come since starting my studies here.

    Outside of University, I have been making the most of the better weather that comes with Spring, and the sunny weather has given me the opportunity to enjoy things on a whole new level, From Morning runs in the Jardin del  Turia and time spent enjoying the beach.

    One of the highlights of the past few weeks has been Easter. In Spain, this holiday is celebrated on a much larger scale than in the United Kingdom, so I had almost two weeks off of University, which gave me a great opportunity to visit somewhere new within Spain. I stayed in Alicante for a week, exploring the coastal cities of Jávea and Dénia, and my family also came to visit me. I enjoyed trying new foods, like “Pulpo Seco” – octopus which is air dried on beaches, a specialty of coastal towns.

    I have also started a new hobby – Jiu-jitsu. I have always been interested in martial arts, and when I saw a local gym offering classes, I decided to give it a try. It has been a challenging but rewarding experience learning new techniques and improving. I have been attending classes two to three times a week for just over a month now, and I plan to continue once I return to England.

    All in all, these past few weeks have been busy but fulfilling, and I am looking forward to the rest of my time here in Valencia. From the challenging coursework at school to the many opportunities to enjoy and explore.

  • Case Study: Monae Bailey, Spain – 2021/22

    During my year abroad, I spent the first semester studying in Alicante and the second semester doing an internship in Salamanca. Both of these experiences were incredible and allowed me to immerse myself in the Spanish lifestyle and meet a lot of different people while improving my knowledge of the language. It was also a very new experience for me, that was out of my comfort zone, but I got used to it and it was a great time.

    One thing I particularly enjoyed about my year abroad was the opportunities I had to explore different cities within Spain. As I spent my time in two different cities that were quite far from each other, this also allowed me to visit a wider variety of places and regions.

    Having this scholarship from John Speak helped me a lot throughout these months as it allowed me to make the most of every opportunity available to me and meant that I had less to worry about and more time to enjoy every aspect of life in Spain.

    I visited places such as Avila, Sevilla, Murcia, Segovia, Toledo, Barcelona and more. It was a great experience and I hope to return in the future in order to continue immersing myself in the culture and language and meet more people.

    My time abroad was important in encouraging me to grow personally as well as academically. This was the first time I had left the country alone, especially for such a long period of time and while it took some getting used to, it was definitely worth it. I found that the mix of studying and doing an internship was incredibly helpful as I had the chance to study along with other exchange students as well as Spanish students while I attended the University of Alicante, and I also had the chance to meet a lot of different students while I interned at a company that helped to facilitate the year abroad for many students. In the internship, I was able to speak to a lot more people daily and this helped immensely to improve my level of Spanish which was great. I found this time in Spain to be an enlightening experience and I would recommend a year abroad to anyone thinking about it as it had a very positive impact on me in many ways. It was especially important for me in enabling me to be more aware of the endless opportunities available to me, especially those abroad and it was fulfilling in many different ways. I cannot wait to return to Spain soon and continue to participate in the lifestyle and learn more about the culture.

  • Monae Bailey: Alicante – January 2022

    ¡Hola! Feliz año nuevo a todos.

    En este momento, es la temporada de exámenes así tengo que concentrar mucho en los estudios. Es muy difícil para estudiar para los exámenes en otra lengua así es un reto y tengo que hacer mucho trabajo.

    Para relajar y tomar un descanso de los estudios, fui al Castillo de San Fernando, otro castillo en Alicante de que se puede ver la mayoría de la ciudad. Hay vistas increíbles de la cima del castillo y tomé muchas fotos. No había tan personas como el Castillo de Santa Barbara así es una atmósfera más tranquila en que se puede disfrutar las vistas, además del sol porque era un día soleado y era un lugar perfecto para aprovechar del sol.

    También, he visitado el museo de las hogueras en el centro de Alicante y una guía nos mostró alrededor del museo, explicando la historia del festivo y los aspectos, es un festivo muy interesante y me parece una experiencia emocionante en la ciudad, con las costumbres y los fuegos artificiales y el sentimiento de comunidad que se celebran. Desafortunadamente, no voy a estar aquí para este festivo, pero me gusta la historia y las tradiciones del festivo de que aprendí en el museo. Hay una tradición para quemar los ‘ninots’ y hay un ninot de cada año en el museo. Es un arte fascinante que me gustó mucho porque es muy creativo y los ninots tiene muchos detalles, con muchos colores y muchos de ellos están personas con expresiones expresivas, las que muestran mucho sobre la escena. Esto me recuerda de un mueso parecido en Valencia, del festivo de ‘Las Fallas’, estas experiencias me han gustado mucho.

    Hello! Happy New Year to everyone.

    At the moment, it is exam season so I have to concentrate a lot on my studies. It´s very difficult to study for these exams, which are in another language so it has been a challenge and I have to focus a lot on the work.

    In order to relax and take a break from studying, I went to the San Fernando Castle, another castle in Alicante from which you can see the majority of the city. There are incredible views from the top of the castle and I took a lot of pictures there. There weren’t as many people as there were at Santa Barbara Castle so it was a much calmer atmosphere in which you could enjoy the views, as well as the sun because it was a very sunny day, and this was the perfect place to take advantage of this.

    Also, I visited the museum of the bonfires of San Juan and a guide showed us around the museum, explaining the history of the festival and the different aspects of it. It is a very interesting festival, and it seems like a very exciting experience in the city, with the traditions and the fireworks and the sense of community during the celebration. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be here for the festival, but I liked learning about the history and the traditions of it in the museum. There is a tradition to burn the ´ninots´ and there is at least one ‘ninot’ from every year in the museum. It is a fascinating art that I liked a lot because it is very creative and the ´ninots´ have a lot of details, and a lot of colours and many of them are people with expressive facial expressions which show a lot about the scene. This reminded me of a similar museum I’ve been to in Valencia, which was of ´Las Fallas´ festival and I enjoyed both of these experiences a lot.

  • Monae Bailey: Alicante – December 2021

    ¡Hola!

    Ha pasado otro mes en Alicante y ha sido una experiencia genial. En cuanto a la universidad, los estudios son bastantes diferentes aquí. En mis clases, hay mucho trabajo en grupo y tenemos practicas cada semana o algo así. El campus aquí me gusta mucho porque hay tanta naturaleza y tantos edificios así es muy bonita. Sin embargo, puede ser un poco confuso porque es difícil navegar estos edificios y encontrar las clases. Pero la gente es muy amable y se ayuda mucho.

    Participé en un intercambio lingüístico con estudiantes diferentes, de muchos países distintas como Nicaragua, Colombia y muchos de España también. Era interesante para conocer y hablar con esas personas durante este tiempo y aprender más sobre ellos y sus culturas. Me gusté esta experiencia y es algo que me gustaría hacer otra vez porque es divertido para conocer a más personas de la universidad y también, es una oportunidad para practicar español en un marco casual con personas que están aprendiendo otra lengua también así se entienden las dificultades.

    Visité el museo de la universidad de Alicante, un aspecto interesante de la universidad. Había exposiciones que llama la atención mucha, como “Sarajevo, Guerra y paz” de Gervasio Sanchez, “Vulnerabilidad(es): obras de la colección per amor a l’art” de autores contemporáneos y “Espai” de Arcadi Blasco. Me gusté que se incluyó distintos tipos de exhibiciones en el museo, algunas fotos y pinturas que demuestran aspectos negativos de la vida como guerra y su destrucción, en comparación con las esculturas de Blasco y las obras que presentan imágenes o pinturas creativas.

    Había un festivo en diciembre, el día de la constitución y en el centro de Alicante había una celebración, con un fuego artificial de una palmera, con los colores de la bandera de España, amarillo y rojo. Muchas personas reunieron cerca del puerto de Alicante para ver el fuego artificial del castillo de Santa Barbara. Disfruté la atmosfera de celebración. Hay otras decoraciones bonitas en el centro para la navidad, con luces y otros adornos navideños.

    Another month has passed in Alicante and it has been a great experience. In relation to University, studying here is quite different. In my classes, there is a lot of group work and we have coursework every week or something similar. I like the campus here a lot because there is a lot of nature and many buildings so it’s a pretty atmosphere. However, it can be a bit confusing at times because it is difficult to navigate the buildings and find classes. But the people are very friendly and helpful.

    I took part in a language exchange with different students, from many different countries such as Nicaragua, Colombia and many students from Spain also. It was interesting to meet and talk to these people during this time as I was able to learn more about them and their cultures. I liked this experience and it is something that I would like to do again because it is fun to meet more people from the university and also, it’s an opportunity to practice Spanish in a casual setting with people who are also learning another language so they understand the difficulties.

    I visited the museum of the University of Alicante, a very interesting aspect of the university. There were many attention- grabbing expositions such as “Sarajevo, Guerra y paz” by Gervasio Sanchez, “Vulnerabilidad(es): obras de la colección per amor a l’art” by contemporary authors y “Espai” by Arcadi Blasco. I liked that there were different types of exhibitions in the museum, some pictures and paintings that present negative aspects of life such as war and its destruction, in comparison with the sculptures of Blasco and the other creative images and paintings.

    There was a holiday in December, Constitution Day, and in the centre of Alicante, there was a celebration with a firework of a palm tree, which was in the colours of the Spanish flag, yellow and red. Many people gathered near the port of Alicante to view the firework from the Santa Barbara Castle. It was a celebratory atmosphere which I enjoyed. There are other beautiful decorations in the centre of Alicante for Christmas, with Christmas lights and other Christmas decorations.

  • Monae Bailey: Un viaje a Murcia – November 2021

    Durante este mes, he estado disfrutando el cambio de vivir en otro país en muchas maneras. Al principio, me aproveché de ir a la playa durante el tiempo bien. Visité la playa de Postiguet además de la playa de San Juan, los dos tienen las vistas bonitas para ver.

    Un fin de semana, fui a la ciudad de Murcia con algunos estudiantes y vimos las vistas geniales de la ciudad. Fuimos al Real Casino de Murcia, un edificio monumental en el centro que se considera histórico-artístico. Visitamos los salones diferentes en el edificio, incluyendo la Galería Central, La Biblioteca Inglesa, El Salón de Baile, El Salón de Armas, El Salón de té y más. Es un monumento muy interesante para mí porque es una atracción turística con habitaciones en que se puede tomar fotos y cada habitación representa algo diferente pero también, es un club privado para la gente, se puede alquilar los salones y vimos las personas jugando el pool mientras que estábamos explorando. Había estatuas en el edificio, un salón en que había muchos espejos, una biblioteca con muchos libros en la segunda planta, de que se puede ver de la planta baja debido a la estructura abierta, las arañas grandes y techos pintados. Me gustaba mucho los techos pintados y los techos de cristal en el edificio. También, vimos el catedral en Murcia, un edifico muy emblemático de Murcia. No tuvimos la oportunidad para ir adentro, pero la vista del edificio fue suficiente. Acabamos el día viendo el atardecer en los barcitos en el rio de Murcia, una experiencia muy genial para mí. Cerca del rio, había un mercado de muchos vendedores de cosas diferentes como los discos de vinilos, los recuerdos y más.

    Una diferencia cultural que me interesa en España es el día de Domingo porque se cierran muchas de tiendas y el público transporte por ejemplo tiene un horario reducido así es un día de resto. En Murcia, mientras que estábamos caminando por las calles, había una carretera cerrada para una academia de patinar, en que los niños estaban aprendiendo a patinar y otros fueron patinando y haciendo los trucos en los patines. También, había un grupo haciendo ejercicio y un mercado en la calle con vendedores distintas y un área para los niños con juegos y cosas así. Me parecía un ambiente de comunidad muy acogedor, con música y mucha gente y mucha que hacer.

    El tiempo de que he pasado en España hasta ahora ha sido una experiencia genial y me gustaría continuar viajar con amigos a otras ciudades mientras que estoy aquí, además de disfrutar las vistas de Alicante.

    Throughout this month, I have been enjoying the change of living in another country in various ways. To begin, I have taken advantage of going to the beach during the nice weather. I visited Postiguet beach as well as San Juan beach, which both have beautiful views to see.

    One weekend, I went to the city of Murcia with some other students, and we saw the great views of the city. We went to the Real Casino de Murcia, a monumental building in the centre that is considered historical-artistic. We visited the different rooms in the building, including the Central Gallery, the English Library, the Dance Hall, Weapons Room, Team Room, and more. It is a very interesting monument for me because it a tourist attraction with rooms in which you can take photos and every room represents something different, but it is also a private club, you can rent the rooms and we saw people playing pool while we were exploring. There were statues in the building, a room with many mirrors, a library with a lot of books on the second floor, which you can see from the first floor due to its open structure, large chandeliers, and painted ceilings. I really loved the painted ceiling and the glass ceilings in the building. Also, we saw the cathedral of Murcia, a very emblematic building in the city. We didn’t get the chance to go inside, but the view of the outside was enough. We ended the day watching the sunset from the small boats in the river of Murcia, a great experience for me. Near to the river, there was also a market where many different things were being sold such as vinyl’s, souvenirs and more.

    A cultural difference that has interested me in Spain is the significance of Sundays because a lot of shops are closed and public transport for example has a reduced timetable so its like a day of rest. In Murcia, while we were walking through the streets, there was a road closed off for a skating academy, in which children were learning to skate and older people were skating and doing tricks on their skates. Also, there was a group doing exercise and a market in the street with a variation of sellers as well as an area for children with games and such. It was a very welcoming community environment, with music and a lot of people and a lot to do.

    The time I have spent in Spain until now has been a great experience and I am looking forward to continuing to travel with friends to other cities while I am here, as well as enjoying the sights in Alicante.

  • Monae Bailey: La transición a Alicante: October 2021

    Hola!

    Me llamo Monae y llegué en Alicante hace menos de 2 semanas. Estoy estudiando aquí para el semestre, con un enfoque en módulos

    de lingüística y un objetivo general de mejorar mi nivel de español. Todos de mis clases están en español y esto es un cambio interesante porque es un desafío estudiar en una lengua diferente a lo que me estoy acostumbrado. Es un poco difícil en este momento, especialmente después de una llegada retrasada, sin embargo, tengo la motivación para mejorar mi habilidad de hablar español e integrarme en la vida en Alicante. Todavía estoy en el proceso de transición y acostumbrando a la vida diaria, lo que es bastante diferente a la vida en Londres. Los aspectos que he reconocido principalmente que están diferentes están: el transporte público, la vida en campus, la compra, la siesta diaria y más. He disfrutado el cambio, especialmente el clima y los paisajes como la playa y la vista de la ciudad y las palmeras y las fuentes que veo cuando yo camino por las calles.

    Un punto culminante de mi tiempo aquí hasta ahora fue una visita al castillo de Santa Barbara en que vi un atardecer bonito de la cima del castillo. Este fue una de las actividades recomendados en una lista de atracciones en Alicante para celebrar el día nacional de España en el doce de octubre. Visité el castillo y la playa del Postiguet, lo que es muy cerca al castillo.

    Tengo muchas ganas de pasar más tiempo explorando la ciudad y las ciudades vecinas durante mi estancia. Quiero probar más comida tradicional, hacer más amigas y experimentar más de la cultura mientras que estoy viviendo aquí.

    Hi!

    My name is Monae, and I arrived in Alicante less than 2 weeks ago. I will be studying here for the semester, focusing on linguistics modules and improving my Spanish in general. All of my classes are in Spanish and this has been interesting change because it’s a challenge studying in a different language to what I am used to. It is a bit difficult at the moment, especially after arriving late, however, I am motivated to improve my fluency in Spanish and integrate myself into the life in Alicante. I am still in the process of transitioning and getting used to daily life, which is quite different to life in London. The main aspects that I have recognised are different are: public transport, life on campus, grocery shopping, the daily siesta and more. I have enjoyed the change, particularly the weather and the change of scenery such as the beach, the views in the city, the palm trees and the fountains that I see walking through the streets.

    One highlight of my time here so far was a visit to the Santa Barbara castle where I was able to watch a beautiful sunset from the top of the castle. This was one of the many things recommended on a list of attractions to visit in Alicante to celebrate the National Day of Spain on the 12th of October. I visited the castle around this time, also visiting Postiguet beach which is very near.

    I am looking forward to spending more time exploring the city and the neighbouring cities during my time here, while trying traditional foods, making more Spanish friends, and experiencing more of the culture.
