  • Max Jenkins: Abril – Pascua y Viajes | April – Easter and Travelling

    ¡Hola!

    Ahora he estado aquí por más de la mitad de mi estancia en Valencia, y me siento emocionado y nervioso al mismo tiempo. Se acercan mis exámenes en mayo y junio, y definitivamente ha aumentado mi carga de trabajo en la Universidad, por lo que estoy pasando mucho tiempo estudiando y preparándome. A pesar de esto, estoy emocionado por el desafío y por ver cuánto he avanzado desde que comencé mis estudios aquí.

     

     

     

    Fuera de la Universidad, me he divertido el mejor clima de la primavera, y me ha dado la oportunidad de disfrutar al máximo de actividades al aire libre, como correr por la mañana en el jardín del Turia y disfrutando la playa.

    Uno de los puntos destacados de las últimas semanas fue la Pascua. En España, esta se celebra a mayor escala que en el Reino Unido, así que tuve casi dos semanas libres, lo que me dio una gran oportunidad para visitar algún lugar nuevo en España. Pasé una semana en Alicante explorando las ciudades costeras de Jávea y Denia, y mi familia también vino a visitarme. Disfruté probando nuevos alimentos como el pulpo seco, una especialidad de la zona.

    También he comenzado un nuevo pasatiempo: Jiu-jitsu. Siempre me ha interesado las artes marciales, y cuando vi que un gimnasio local ofrecía clases, decidí probarlo. Ha sido una experiencia desafiante pero gratificante para aprender nuevas técnicas y mejorar. He asistido a clases de dos a tres veces cada semana durante un mes, y me gustaría continuarlo cuando regrese a inglaterra.

    Estas últimas semanas han estado ocupadas pero satisfactorias, y espero con ansias el resto de mi tiempo aquí en Valencia. Desde el exigente trabajo en la escuela hasta las numerosas actividades de ocio y exploración.

    Hello!

    Now that I have come up to halfway through my time in Valencia, I find myself feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. With my exams coming up in May and June, the workload at school has definitely increased, and I am spending a lot of time studying and preparing for them. However, I am also looking forward to the challenge, and to seeing how far I have come since starting my studies here.

    Outside of University, I have been making the most of the better weather that comes with Spring, and the sunny weather has given me the opportunity to enjoy things on a whole new level, From Morning runs in the Jardin del  Turia and time spent enjoying the beach.

    One of the highlights of the past few weeks has been Easter. In Spain, this holiday is celebrated on a much larger scale than in the United Kingdom, so I had almost two weeks off of University, which gave me a great opportunity to visit somewhere new within Spain. I stayed in Alicante for a week, exploring the coastal cities of Jávea and Dénia, and my family also came to visit me. I enjoyed trying new foods, like “Pulpo Seco” – octopus which is air dried on beaches, a specialty of coastal towns.

    I have also started a new hobby – Jiu-jitsu. I have always been interested in martial arts, and when I saw a local gym offering classes, I decided to give it a try. It has been a challenging but rewarding experience learning new techniques and improving. I have been attending classes two to three times a week for just over a month now, and I plan to continue once I return to England.

    All in all, these past few weeks have been busy but fulfilling, and I am looking forward to the rest of my time here in Valencia. From the challenging coursework at school to the many opportunities to enjoy and explore.

    ¡Que viene Semana Santa!

    Ya está la temporada de fiesta y feria aquí en Andalucia, esperamos semana santa e ya hemos tenido carnaval pero los andaluces quieren celebrar más, por eso cada pueblo tiene su propio celebraciones. Este fin de semana por ejemplo, me voy a Casas Viejas con uno de mis compañeros de rugby para celebrar su fiesta de la independencia desde el próximo pueblo Benalup. Para ser sincero, esta fiesta no tiene un gran historia, pero se celebra porque en 1991 se separaban los dos pueblos, e ya está. Pero voy yo para ver los pueblos blancos y disfrutar de los toros y la música andaluza.

    Además había un montón de noticias sobre el 23F este mes; significa el 23 de Febrero cuando había un golpe de estado después del muerte de Franco. El 23 de Febrero 1981 fue un intento fallido a prevenir la vota a elegir Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo cómo primero ministerio del país. Este golpe vino debido a muchas razones pero lo más importante fue que algunos en el ejército no quería cambio después de Franco porque les perderían tanto: dinero, casas, poder, etc,. Se paraba gracias al rey que transmitía en la television que denunciaba este golpe al estado y decía que España quería cambio.

    A mí me parece que he mejorado mucho mi español oral porque este mes en trabajo hemos cambiado un poco lo que estaba haciendo. Este mes he tenido que andar alrededor de la ciudad buscando muchos bares y restaurantes para hablar con los dueños sobre aspectos de marketing. Es decir que en el colegio queremos crear una tarjeta de descuento para nuestros estudiantes e yo he tenido que negociar con los varios empresarios sobre las ofertas que podríamos recibir por grupo de estudiantes. Yo diría que eso es lo más interesante aspecto de mi trabajo hasta ahora porque puedo hablar más y tengo la autoridad a encontrar mis propias ofertas para la escuela, me ha gustado mucho!

     

    Easter is coming!

    Now is the party and celebration season here in Andalusia, we are waiting for Easter and we have already had Carnaval but the Andalusians want to celebrate more, therefore each village has its own festivities. This weekend for example, I am going to Casas Viejas with one of my rugby teammates in order to celebrate the villages independence from the neighbouring town of Benalup. To be completely honest this party doesn’t have a long and interesting history but it is celebrated because in 1991 the two towns separated, and that is all. But in any case, I am going in order to see the white villages and enjoy the bulls and some typical andalusian music.

    In addition, there was a huge amount of news about 23F this month; this stands for 23rd of February when there was a coup d’etat after the death of Franco. On the 23rd February 1981 there was a failed attempt to block the vote to elect Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo as the prime minister of the country. This coup came about because of a variety of reasons, but one of the most important was that there were some senior members in the armed forces that didn’t want change after Franco because they were set to lose so much: money, land, power, etc,. Thankfully, it was stopped because the King sent out a television broadcast in which he denounced the coup d’etat and proclaimed that Spain wanted change.

    I think that I have improved my spoken Spanish a lot this month because we have changed what I’m doing a little bit. This month I am having to walk around the city searching for bars and restaurants to speak with their owners about marketing. In the school at the moment we want to make a discount card for our students and I have had to negotiate with various businesses about the offers and discounts that we would be able to receive per group of students. I would say that this has been the most interesting aspect of my work so far because I am able to speak more and I have the authority to find my own offers for the school, I really have enjoyed it a lot.

    最近几个星期，我有跟我姐姐在中国旅游的机会。这是我姐姐第一次来中国所以我得保证我姐姐享受旅游因为我是她的导游。我们在桂林见面然后我们一起去上海，西安和北京。姐姐带来有些英国礼物送给我，比如巧克力复活节彩蛋。不幸，我姐姐还带来英国天气：桂林，上海和北京大部分时间有大雨。尽管如此，我们旅游很成功，我们开心。虽然从上海环球金融中心顶的风景被多云隐藏，但是长城天气，风景特别好（图片下面的图片比较风光）。我姐姐最喜欢的城市，她最终挑选北京。除了天气以外，北京有别好处，包括北京是我住的地方。我能用我当地知识来把姐姐表示北京最好的饭馆，酒吧。我渐渐成为当地人。

    在上海的时候，我们过复活节。我再次觉得在中国过基督教的节日是有点奇怪的经验。不过，复活节在现代中国不太流行，跟圣诞节不同。复活节可能没有流行因为是不太商业化的节日：没有买很多礼物的复活节传统。还是，我和姐姐去上海大教堂的庆典。教堂非常漂亮 ：外面和里面都非常华丽。两个地方让我吃惊：首先，众多中国人去听英文教堂服务。中文教堂服务当天早些时候被举行可是我认为太多中国人想去听中文的所以他们代替需要去英文的。我已经听到中国现在有全球最大基督徒人口之一的统计但是直到你看到中国教堂会众的时候，这个统计牵强附会。第二个可怪事件是外国教士。似乎中文和英文的教堂服务都被外国教士举办。由于中国很大基督徒人口，我吃惊因为我认为中国教堂大概有中国教士。

    夏天来到北京。我晒伤的皮肤是证据。虽然天气最近非常好，每天涂防晒霜有点麻烦。太阳会鼓励我住在里面，更努力学习！

     

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    In the past couple of weeks, I have had the opportunity to travel around China with my sister. This was my sister’s first time in China so, as I was the tour guide, I was under pressure to give her a good impression of the country. We met in Guilin and travelled to Shanghai, Xi’an and Beijing. My sister brought a few British gifts for me, for    example a chocolate Easter egg. Unfortunately, my sister also took British weather with her: in Guilin, Shanghai and Beijing it rained for the majority of the time. Nonetheless, we still had a great time. Although the views from the top of the Shanghai World Financial Tower were a little obscured by clouds, the weather and scenery from the Great Wall was fantastic (look at the pictures below for the comparison). Ultimately my sister chose Beijing as her favourite city. Besides the weather, Beijing had the advantage of it being where I live. I was able to use my local knowledge to show my sister the city’s great restaurants and bars. I am gradually feeling more like a local.

     

    In Shanghai, we celebrated Easter Sunday. It was again unusual to celebrate a Christian festival in China. However, unlike Christmas, Easter is not as popular in China today. This is possibly due to its less commercial nature as there is not a large tradition of buying numerous gifts at Easter time. Nonetheless, my sister and I went to a church service at a cathedral in Shanghai. The church was stunning, both the exterior and interior were very ornate and attractive. Two elements surprised me: firstly, the huge number of locals who attended the English language service. The Chinese service was earlier in the day but evidently too many locals wanted to attend so they joined the English service instead. I have heard the statistics saying that China now has one of the largest Christian populations in the world but it is hard to believe until you see the Chinese congregation yourself. The second surprising sight was the foreign clergy. It seemed that both services had been conducted by foreign clergy. I found this surprising as I thought that with a large domestic Christian population, Chinese churches would have Chinese clergy.

    Summer has arrived in Beijing. The evidence is my sunburnt skin.

    Although the weather is nice, using sun-cream can be a bit troublesome. It will encourage me to stay inside and do more work!

     

  • Abril en Madrid

    Abril en Madrid , sin duda marcó el inicio de la primavera , ¡por fin! También se inició una serie de fiestas de la comunidad de Madrid, que me han permitido viajar y conocer Barcelona. Desde Navidad han sido unos meses muy intensos desde el punto de vista del trabajo con el re- lanzamiento de ” NH Hotel Group ” y sin ” Festivos “, mi oficina acogió con satisfacción las vacaciones de Semana Santa.

    Ligeramente diferente al Reino Unido, la mayoría de las regiones de España tienen “Jueves y Viernes Santo “, que es que tienen ” Viernes Santo ” y en vez de ‘ Lunes de Pascua ‘ Se trata de ‘ El Jueves Santo ‘ . De cualquier manera los españoles terminar con un fin de semana de 4 días de esa semana , que me dio tiempo suficiente para conquistar Barcelona.

    La ciudad siempre me había intrigado desde que me había trasladado a Madrid, no sólo por la rivalidad que existe entre mi casa actual y el Barcelona , que puede estar en relación con el fútbol o la mejor atracción turística. Pero más que nunca a causa de la enemistad que existe entre algunos madrileños y catalanes . Algunos de ustedes saben que Barcelona forma parte de la región de España llamada Cataluña y quieren separarse de España y ser independiente . Independientemente de esto realmente disfruté de mi fin de semana largo en Barcelona , la obra de Gaudí fue aún mejor en la vida real , es una ciudad realmente impresionante y tiene algo único que Madrid no … una playa !

    Hablando de fútbol y de rivalidad , ya que escribo esta entrada para abril , el Atlético de Madrid ha ganado la Liga y se enfrentará al Real Madrid en la final de la Liga de Campeones en mayo. Tengo que admitir que no soy el mayor fan de fútbol , pero vivir en un país donde el fútbol es básicamente parte de la cultura , hace que me encuentre entusiasmada para ver el partido de la final para ver quién es en realidad el campeón de la ciudad!
