Moving to Spain to start my first job has been the most challenging experience of my life so far however it has also been the most rewarding. Since starting university almost three years ago now, my degree has been building up to this point. Being awarded a scholarship by the John Speak Language Trust has helped to alleviate some of the stress and financial burden that comes with being at such a pinnacle point of my degree. The scholarship has allowed me to make the most of my time in Granada and seize every opportunity with both hands.

With regards to my internship, it was very enlightening to be out of education and I have learnt a lot from it. I gained an insight into sectors such as Sales, Business Development and Software Engineering. Moreover I also enhanced my professional development by learning more about myself and how I operate in a professional setting. Working in such a rapidly growing startup forced me to adapt to and tackle new challenges with greater confidence and professionalism, both inside and out of the office. Whether it was combating the language barrier or dealing with new scenarios with customers. The combination of working and living abroad has trained me to be able to deal with almost any obstacle that I face.

I am extremely proud to say that I lived in Granada. It is a remarkable city with a rich cultural and historical background that I would not have been able to appreciate if I had not lived there myself. These six months have been an unforgettable journey which I have been able to share with friends from all over the world.
If you ever have the chance to do a year or even a semester abroad, I highly recommend it. The skills, experiences and memories on offer are priceless and will stay with you for life.

Mudarme a España para empezar mi primer trabajo ha sido la experiencia más desafiante de mi vida hasta ahora, pero también la más gratificante. Desde que empecé la universidad hace casi tres años, mi título ha ido creciendo hasta este punto. Recibir una beca del John Speak Language Trust me ha ayudado a aliviar parte del estrés y la carga financiera que conlleva el estar en un punto tan alto de mi carrera. La beca me ha permitido aprovechar al máximo mí tiempo en Granada y aprovechar cada oportunidad con ambas manos.

Con respecto a mi pasantía, fue muy esclarecedor estar fuera de la educación y le he aprendido mucho. He adquirido una visión de sectores como las ventas, el desarrollo de negocios y la ingeniería de software. Además, también mejoré mi desarrollo profesional aprendiendo más sobre mí mismo y sobre cómo actúo en un entorno profesional. Trabajar en una empresa de tan rápido crecimiento me obligó a adaptarme y a afrontar nuevos retos con mayor confianza y profesionalidad, tanto dentro como fuera de la oficina. Ya fuera combatiendo la barrera del idioma o tratando nuevos escenarios con los clientes. La combinación de trabajar y vivir en el extranjero me ha entrenado para ser capaz de lidiar con casi cualquier obstáculo que enfrente.

Estoy muy orgulloso de decir que viví en Granada. Es una ciudad extraordinaria, con un rico bagaje cultural e histórico que no hubiera podido apreciar si no hubiera vivido allí yo mismo. Estos seis meses han sido un viaje inolvidable que he podido compartir con amigos de todo el mundo. Si alguna vez tienes la oportunidad de hacer un año o incluso un semestre en el extranjero, te lo recomiendo encarecidamente. Las habilidades, experiencias y recuerdos que se ofrecen no tienen precio y se quedarán contigo de por vida.
Me gustaría agradecer al John Speak Language Trust por su apoyo financiero durante mi estancia en España. Mi año en el extranjero no habría sido el mismo sin él. Ha sido un catalizador para mi inmersión en la lengua y la cultura españolas y por eso siempre estaré agradecido.

During my time in Granada it is clear to see the legacy Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca has left behind in his home city. The poet, playwright and theatre director made a great social impact during his short 38 year long life which can be seen through the numerous things named after him such as the park and even the airport. On my road there is a statue of him along with other famous Granadians however he stands out to me the most. Having studied his play ‘Bodas de sangre’ in detail at university I had some pre-existing knowledge on him but I did not know how important he is. I am going to visit his museum without a doubt.
The museum was once the summer home of the Lorca family and is situated within the Federico Garcia Lorca Park, also known as the Huerta de San Vicente. The summer retreat inspired Lorca to do what he did best: write. The inside of the house has been preserved very well. It is the same as it was for the Lorca family and there are many original items of furnishing still there. Many of his famous works were created here, coincidentally including in 1932 the tragedy Blood Wedding. The park was created as a memorial to Lorca. It is situated on the outskirts of the city which was once the Vega or the orchard area of Granada. The park is on one of if not the longest roads in the city: Camino de Ronda which runs all along the city side of the autovia.
A month after the civil war started Lorca was arrested and killed on the orders of right-wing military authorities in Granada. According to newly released documents that give an insight on the death of one of the most famous victims of the Spanish civil war. The documents, written in 1965 by the Granada police are the first ever admission by Franco-era officials being involved in the death. The documents suggest García Lorca was persecuted as a result of his beliefs, depicting him as a socialist and a Freemason who carried out homosexual and abnormal practices.
It is clear to see despite his short life, the influence he still has on Spanish society today. His legacy will continue forever.

Durante mi estancia en Granada es evidente el legado que Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca ha dejado en su ciudad natal. El poeta, dramaturgo y director teatral tuvo un gran impacto social durante su corta vida de 38 años que se puede ver a través de las numerosas cosas que llevan su nombre como el parque e incluso el aeropuerto. En mi camino hay una estatua de él junto con otros granadinos famosos, sin embargo él es el que más me llama la atención. Habiendo estudiado su obra ‘Bodas de sangre’ en detalle en la universidad tenía algunos conocimientos preexistentes sobre él pero no sabía lo importante que es. Voy a visitar su museo sin duda.
El museo fue una vez la casa de verano de la familia Lorca y está situado dentro del Parque Federico García Lorca, también conocido como la Huerta de San Vicente. El retiro de verano inspiró a Lorca a hacer lo que mejor sabía hacer: escribir. El interior de la casa se ha conservado muy bien. Es la misma que la de la familia Lorca y todavía hay muchos muebles originales. Muchas de sus famosas obras fueron creadas aquí, incluyendo casualmente en 1932 la tragedia de las Bodas de Sangre. El parque fue creado como un monumento a Lorca. Está situado a las afueras de la ciudad, en lo que fue la Vega o la zona de la huerta de Granada. El parque se encuentra en una de las carreteras más largas de la ciudad: El Camino de Ronda que recorre toda la ciudad por el lado de la autovía.
Un mes después del inicio de la guerra civil, Lorca fue arrestado y asesinado por orden de las autoridades militares derechistas de Granada. Según documentos recién publicados que dan una idea de la muerte de una de las víctimas más famosas de la guerra civil española. Los documentos, escritos en 1965 por la policía de Granada, son la primera admisión de que los oficiales de la época de Franco estuvieron involucrados en la muerte. Los documentos sugieren que García Lorca fue perseguido como resultado de sus creencias, describiéndolo como un socialista y un masón que realizaba prácticas homosexuales y anormales.
Es evidente que a pesar de su corta vida, la influencia que tiene todavía en la sociedad española de hoy en día. Su legado continuará para siempre.

Es difícil saber si este primer mes me ha pasado volando o no, de día a día cambia. La idea de trasladarme a un nuevo país siempre había sido una bastante abrumadora, puedo decir que ha sido un paso enorme para mí. Aunque llegando no conocía a nadie, pronto hice amigos con la plétora de estudiantes de Erasmus en UGR.
Situado en la fascinante región de Andalucía, la provincia de Granada cuenta con una amplia gama de playas y pueblos. Hasta ahora, el viaje más interesante que he hecho fue al territorio británico de Gibraltar, la casa de los macacos. Es más Gibraltar está a solo 11 kilómetros de Marruecos, el norte de África. Desde el peñón de Gibraltar puedes ver los paisajes hermosos del norte del continente.
Yo diría que en Granada ya me siento como si estuviera en mi casa. Estoy muy contento en mi trabajo, y la vida andaluza es de maravilla y la cultura de ir de tapas es un sueño. Ahora tengo muchas ganas de seguir explorando la apasionante historia de esta ciudad, con la famosa Alhambra siendo la joya de la corona. Desde cualquier punto en la ciudad se puede ver por ejemplo al Mirador de San Nicolás. Espero a entrarlo antes de irme de Granada.

In brief, my name is Aarun Ilyas and I study Hispanic Studies with Business Management at Queen Mary University of London. As part of my third year, I’m doing a work placement at Badger Maps, an American startup, in Granada, in the south of Spain.
It’s difficult to know if this first month has flown by or not, it varies from day to day. The idea of moving to a new country alone has always been quite a daunting thought and I can say that it has been a big step up for me. Although arriving not knowing anyone, I soon made friends with a lot of the Erasmus students at UGR.
Situated in the fascinating region of Andalucía, the province of Granada has a wide range of beaches and towns. So far, the most interesting trip I have done was to the British territory of Gibraltar, the home of the macaques. Moreover Gibraltar is only 11 kilometres from Morocco, the north of Africa. From the Rock of Gibraltar, you can see beautiful landscapes of the north of the continent.
I would say that in Granada I already feel like I am at home. I am very happy at work, Andalusian life is wonderful and the culture of going out for tapas is a dream. Now I look forward to continuing to explore the exciting history of this city, with the famous Alhambra being the jewel in the crown. It can be seen from anywhere in the city for example at the Mirador de San Nicolás. I hope to go inside it before leaving Granada.
Arrivant au terme de mon semestre à Paris, je suis étonné qu’il me reste encore plein de choses à voir. Des attractions touristiques, des bars et des restaurants cools – il y a encore beaucoup à découvrir, mais si peu de temps pour le faire ! Ces derniers week-ends, j’ai décidé d’essayer de compléter une «To Do List» des choses que je n’avais pas encore faites en étant à Paris.

Si vous avez déjà vu le film Inception, alors vous pourrez reconnaître cet endroit ! C’est une excellente occasion pour prendre des photos, si vous êtes un amoureux d’Instagram comme moi.
La Petite Ceinture
C’est un trésor pour tout le monde, cet espace vert étonnant sert de refuge pour les résidents sociaux et pour les sans-abris. Il y a même de petits bars et des restaurants parsemés le long de la piste 20-mile, qui a été abandonnée pendant plus de 80 ans. Pensez à réserver votre après-midi ou la matinée car cet endroit est immense !
Tour Montparnasse
Je pense que la plupart de mes amis anglais l’ont visité mais malheureusement, je n’ai pas eu le temps de le faire jusqu’à la fin de semaine dernière. Si vous êtes un fan de beaux paysages, cet endroit est fait pour vous ! Ce n’est pas aussi grand que la Tour Eiffel mais elle offre une meilleure vue à mon avis et est beaucoup moins chère et moins fréquentée que la Tour Eiffel.
La Défense
Si vous aimez faire du shopping, cet endroit est beaucoup mieux que les Champs-Elysées surpeuplés ou l’Opéra. ‘Les 4 temps’ est l’endroit idéal pour faire vos courses car tout y est centralisé, et même si vous y allez un samedi après-midi, la foule ne devrait pas trop vous stresser !

Coming to the end of my time in Paris, it still amazes me how much of Paris I haven’t been able to see. From tourist attractions, to cool bars and restaurants – there’s still so much to discover, but so little time to do it in. These past few weekends I’ve decided to try and complete a ‘Bucket List’ of things that I still hadn’t done whilst being in Paris.

The Petite Ceinture
This is a treasure trove for everyone, this amazing green space serves as a haven for social recluses and a shelter for the homeless. There’s even little bars and restaurant dotted along the 20-mile track, which has been abandoned for over 80 years. Be sure to reserve an afternoon or morning here though, as this place is huge!
Tour Montparnasse
I think that most of my English friends have been here, but unfortunately, I didn’t get the change, until last weekend. If you’re a fan of beautiful landscapes, this is one for you! It’s not as big as the Eiffel tower, but offers better view in my opinion and is much more cheaper and less busy than the Eiffel tower.
La Défense
If you’re into your shopping, this place is much better than the over-crowded Champs-Elysées or Opéra. ‘Les 4 temps’ is the perfect place to do your shopping, as everything is in one place, and even if you go on a Saturday afternoon, the crowds will definitely not stress you out!
Ich habe jetzt für länger als einen Monat in Deutschland sein! Zuerst fühlte ich ziemlich Heimweh und fand ich es mich schwierig zu niederlassen. Ich hatte niemand getroffen, weil die Universität nicht anfangen hatte. Aber fühle ich jetzt viel besser. Meine ersten Vorlesungen waren letzte Woche und ich habe viele neue Leute von rund der Welt getroffen! Wir besuchten auch viel Partys und andere Erasmus Verantstaltungen. Das Nachtleben in Deutschland ist sehr anders im Vergleich als England, die Partys anfang früher und beenden viel später! Es ist aber super toll!
Wir haben auch Ostern in Berlin verbracht, das war schön. Ich habe eine Freundin, die Berlin lebt und deshalb war sie eine sehr gute Reiseleiterin. Wir besuchten Potsdam am Ostersonntag. Potsdam liegt etwa 15km weg von Berlin und es hat viele schöne Schlössen und Parks. Mein Handy hatte keine Batterie und leider könnte ich keine Fotos nehmen! 🙁
Ostern in Deutschland ist mehr als in England gefeiert und es war nett, alle die bunten Eier zu sehen. In jeder Supermarkt gab es verschiedene Arten von bunten Eiern aber keine schokolade Eier! Ich glaube, dass dieses Jahr mein erstes Jahr ohne shokolade Eier ist!
Ich habe auch gemerkt, dass am Sonntags in Deutschland, der Land geschlossen ist! Man kann Nirgendwo gehen oder kaufen Nichts. Deswegen verbringen wir die meisten Sonntags im Park. Das Wetter hat echt sonnig und ziemlich warm werden, also sitzen im Park mit einem kalten Bier fantastisch ist.
Ich habe auch einige ,Tandem Partners’ getroffen. Ein Tandem Partner ist ein Person, die ich mit treffe, um Deutsch zu sprechen und deshalb mein Deutsch verbessern.

Settling in Jena
I have now been in Germany for over a month! At first I felt quite homesick and I found it difficult to settle in. I hadn’t met anyone because the university hadn’t started yet. However now I feel much better! My first lectures and classes took place last week and I have met many new people from all around the world. So far we’ve been to lots of partys and other erasmus events. The nightlife in Germany is very different to England! The night starts much later and therefore finished much later too. It’s great though!
We spent Easter in Berlin, which was lovely. I have a friend who lives in Berlin so she was a great tour guide for us. On Easter Sunday we visited a small city called Potsdam which is located about 15km away from the center of Berlin. It’s got lots of beautiful palaces and parks. However my phone ran out of battery so I couldn’t take any photos! 🙁
Easter is celebrated more in Germany than it is in England and it was nice to see all the colourful eggs. In every supermarket there were so many different types of coloured eggs but no chocolate ones! I believe that this is my first Easter without eating a chocolate Easter egg!
I have also realised that on Sundays in Germany everywhere is closed. You can’t go anywhere or buy anything! Because of this we have spent the majority of Sundays in the park. The weather has been really sunny and quite warm. Its great to sit in the park with a cold beer 🙂
I have also met a few Tandem Partners. A Tandem Partner is a person who I can meet to speak German with and therefore improve it!
