  • Case Study: Jacob Lloyd, Germany – 2018

    As part of my International Business with German course at Sheffield Hallam University, I have the opportunity to live in Germany for 18 months: 6 months studying and 12 months on a work placement.

    I received support from the John Speak Trust in the first 6 months during my study semester at the Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena, Thuringia.

    Here I undertook regular language classes in addition to business modules taught in German alongside native speakers. This allowed me to progress my language skills more rapidly than I have previously experienced. My reading, writing, speaking and listening skills all felt like they were improving as the language became my main focus. Weekends and my free time also provided opportunity to explore the rest of Germany, allowing me to experience the things that cannot be found in a classroom, such as the extensive use of slang and the true variety of German dialect, as it is such a linguistically diverse country. This was most evident when I visited Stuttgart just before beginning my work placement with Bosch, as the contrast in language, dialect and culture compared to, for example, Cologne was remarkable. The Swabian dialect is definitely something that takes a bit of time to get used to, but is a much softer way of speaking and I’m beginning to rather like it. The people I met whilst living in Jena and Stuttgart have only enhanced my experience.

    Finding myself in new cities but feeling so comfortable with a solid group of friends is one of the many highlights that I will always remember.

    I will now enjoy the rest of my time on placement abroad before returning to Sheffield to complete my course.

    I am hugely grateful to the John Speak Trust, as without the funding I would not have been able to explore nearly as much as I have and would have felt much more restricted.

    The monthly reports have also left me with something to look back on and reminisce in a way that would not otherwise be possible.  Thank you.

     

  • Jonathan Saad: Christmas and Hackathon, Deutschland – December 2018

    Willkommen zu meinem Dezember Bericht aus Darmstadt. Da die Tage kälter und kürzer werden, und alle sich auf die Ferien freuen, war dieser Monat etwas ruhiger als die bisherigen.

    Wie es jedes Jahr in vielen Deutschen Städten üblich ist, hat sich die Darmstädter Stadtmitte völlig für Weihnachten umgewandelt. Der Darmstädter Weihnachtsmarkt ist vielleicht nicht so groß wie zum Beispiel der in Frankfurt, hat aber alle wichtigen Geschäfte. Bevor ich den Weihnachtsmarkt in Darmstadt erlebt habe, hatte ich keine Ahnung wie viele verschiedene Weihnachtsgetränke es gibt. Bisher, hatte ich nur den Weihnachtsmarkt in Birmingham, in Großbritannien, erlebt, da dies meine Heimatstadt ist. Natürlich kannte ich Glühwein, jetzt habe ich aber auch Weißen Glühwein, Feuerzangenbowle und auch Zimtzauber kennengelernt. Leider gibt es aber noch so viele andere Getränke und nur noch wenige Tage alle zu Probieren!

    Etwas das ich beim Studium ganz wichtig finde, ist immer davon bewusst zu bleiben, dass man nach der Uni eine Karriere haben wird. Damit man dabei die richtigen Entscheidungen trifft, muss man immer Erlebnisse suchen, die einem informieren, und bei der Entscheidung helfen können. Deshalb, habe ich mich im Oktober für einen Hackathon in Mainz eingeschrieben, der von Continental geleitet worden ist. Erster Sicht, war dieses Erlebnis ein guter Weg meine Kodierfähigkeit zu werter. Zweitens gab es mir die Gelegenheit, mehr über die Entwicklung die Continental, im Gebiet vom Autonomes fahren, unternimmt zu lernen, und mit vielen interessanten Leuten zu sprächen.

    Unsere Challenge die wir im Hackathon unternommen haben, war die echt zeitige Dateien von einem Auto irgendwie zu benutzen. Meine Manschaft hat sich entschieden die Daten zu bearbeiten, so dass wir dem Fahrer eine Risikobewertung ermitteln konnten. Dies würde zum Beispiel bei erhöhte Geschwindigkeit oder bei hohe Konzentration von Fußgängern steigen. Die drei Tagen des Wettbewerbs waren aber nicht nur Kodieren, es hab natürlich auch Zeit neue interessante Leute kennenzulernen, und um sich zu entspannen. Es gab sogar auch eine Lichtshow, die in den Bildern zu sehen ist. Die Veranstaltung hat viel Spaß gemacht – hoffentlich habe ich die Gelegenheit sowas nochmal zu machen.

    Welcome to my December report from Darmstadt. As the days are getting shorter and colder, and everyone is looking forward to the holidays, this month has been somewhat quieter than normal.

    As is common every year in many Germany cities, the centre of Darmstadt has completely transformed for Christmas. The Darmstadt Christmas Markets may not be as big as the one in Frankfurt, but it does have all the important stands. Until now, I have only ever experienced the Christmas Market in Birmingham (UK), as this is my home city. Of course, I already knew about Glühwein from home, but I have now also tried White Glühwein, Feuerzangenbowle and Zimtzauber. There are so many other drinks to try, and only so few days left!

    Something I think is very important to do while studying, is to always be aware that after university you will have a career. So that you make the right decisions for yourself, it is always important to be looking for opportunities to learn and help with the decision. That is why in October I signed up for a Hackathon in Mainz, run by Continental. This experience was a great way to evaluate my coding ability, but was also a great opportunity to find out more about the research Continental is doing in the field of autonomous driving, as well as speak to plenty of interesting people.

    Our challenge at the Hackathon was to somehow use real-time data from a car and make something interesting. My team decided to process the data to give the driving a risk-rating, which would increase at high speeds, or when there were many pedestrians nearby. The three days of the competition where not just coding, there was of course time to meet new people, and relax. There was even a light show, which you can see in the photos below! The event was great fun, and I hope to have the chance to do something like this again.

  • Jonathan Saad: Heidelberg, Deutschland – November 2018

    Willkommen bei meinem Novemberbericht. Irgendwie ist schon noch ein Monat hier in Darmstadt vorbei. Diesen Monat, habe ich die wunderschöne Stadt von Heidelberg besichtigt. Heidelberg ist eine mittelgroße Stadt von 150,000 Einwohnern, die ungefähr 50 km südlich von Darmstadt liegt. Die Stadt besuchen wurde mir schon öftermals empfohlen, da sie den Ruf einer malerishen Stadt hat.

    Ich war mit einer Freundin unterwegs, allerdings sind wir nicht direkt nach Heidelberg gefahren, da es billiger war mit unserem Semesterticket erst umsonst nach Weinheim zu fahren, und von dort aus weiter nach Heidelberg zu fahren. Obwohl wir nicht lange in Weinheim verbringen konnten, haben wir es trotzdem geschafft in den traditionell Deutschen Straßen herumzuwandern, und ein paar Fotos zu machen.
    Heidelberg ist für mehrere Sehenswürdigkeiten bekannt, die berühmteste davon, ist das Heidelberger Schloss. Aber zuerst, sind wir aber zum Marktplatz gegangen, wo es auch die sehr beeindruckende Heiliggeistkirche steht. Diese Kirche sei besonders Beeindruckend, da sie nicht nur groß ist, sondern auch in der Mitte des Marktplatzes steht, separat von anderen Gebäuden. Die Stadt hat auch natürlich viele anderen Kirchen, die kleiner als die Heiliggeistkirche sind. Unter anderen, gibt es die Jesuitenkirche und Peterskirche, wo die Peterskirche die Älteste davon ist. Natürlich sind wir auch die steile Straße zum Schloss auch hochgeklettert, von wo man einen tollen Überblick von Heidelberg sehen kann. Im Foto, können Sie sehen, was für Glück wir mit dem Wetter hatten, und eventuell können Sie auch im Hintergrund die Stadt Mannheim sehen.

    Das Schloss ist einer der berühmtesten Ruinen Deutschlands und ist natürlich auch wunderschön. Ich finde es immer eindrucksvoll, wie Menschen sowas gebaut haben, ohne die Maschinen von der modernen Welt zu benutzen. Sogar nur einen Baustein zu fertigen und zu bewegen würde viele lange, harte Stunden dauern.

    Welcome to my November report. Somehow another month in Darmstadt has already passed by. This month I went to see the beautiful city of Heidelberg, which has population of around 150,000 people, and lies around 50km south of Darmstadt. It’s often been recommended I go and see Heidelberg, as it has the reputation of being a picturesque city.

    I went with a friend, but we decided not to go straight to Heidelberg, as it was cheaper to travel via Weinheim with our Semestertickets. Despite not being able to spend long there, we managed to walk around the traditional German roads and take a few photos.

    Heidelberg is known for several sights, the most famous of which is the Heidelberg castle. But first we went to the marketplace, to see the very impressive Heiliggeist (Holy spirit) Church. This church is especially impressive, not just because of the size, but also because it stands in the middle of the marketplace, and is separated from other buildings. Of course the city has many other churches, among them the Jesuitenkirche and Peterskirche, of which Peterskirche is the oldest. We then decided to climb up the steep road to  Heidelberg castle, from which you can get a great view of the city. You can see from the photo what great weather we had, and may be able to see Mannheim in the background.

    The castle is one of the most famous ruins in Germany, and is of course very impressive. I am always amazed by how something like it was constructed without the machines we now rely upon. Even just preparing and moving a single brick would have taken many long, hard hours.

  • Oktoberfest – Jonathan Saad: Germany, October 2018

    Hallo! Noch ein Monat schon vorbei und deshalb ist jetzt die Zeit für noch ein Bericht! Da ich jetzt den Großteil der Administration hinter mir hatte, konnte ich diesen Monat mehr von Deutschland erleben. Und wo wäre den besser anzufangen, als beim Oktoberfest?

    Vom Oktoberfest hat fast jeder etwas gehört. Jedes Jahr findet es in München für ungefähr 2,5 Wochen statt. Viele sind traditionell bayerisch verkleidet und alle trinken Bier, es ist nämlich das internationale Bier Festival. Jedes Jahr kommen Millionen von Leuten aus ganz Deutschland und der ganzen Welt zu München, um das Fest zu besuchen. Dieses Jahr waren 6,3 Millionen Besuchern! Das ganze Fest war sehr beeindruckend – die Größe von dem Event habe ich (obwohl ich es wusste) nicht erwartet und die 1 Liter Bier Maßkrüge waren viel größer und schwerer als erwartet! Obwohl Oktoberfest München das originelle Oktoberfest ist, wird es in der ganzen Welt nachgemacht. Dieses Wochenende hat sogar Darmstadt ein Oktoberfest! Ich gehe bestimmt dahin um es mit dem originellen Oktoberfest in München zu vergleichen.

    Außer Oktoberfest sind auch andere Sachen in diesem Monat passiert, diesen Monat ist nämlich auch das Studium angefangen. Da gibt es auch natürlich viel zu tun, von Kurse wählen über Sport und Studentenvereine. Ein Verein, das mich sehr interessieren würde dabei mitzumachen, wäre „Dart“. Dies ist nämlich die Motorrennen Mannschaft von der TU Darmstadt, wo Studierende jedes Jahr ein neues Elektroauto bauen, mit dem sie dann gegen andere Universitäten um die Wette rennen. Ich kenne diesen Wettbewerb aus meiner Englischen Universität, allerdings scheinen die Mannschaften in Deutschland größer zu sein, und mehr Arbeit hereinzustecken. Es gibt sogar einige Studenten die ein ganzes Jahr, nur am Auto arbeiten, statt zu studieren!

    Ich freue mich ihnen nächsten Monat noch mehr über meine ersten Monate in Darmstadt zu erzählen!

    Hello! Another month has already flown by, so it’s time for another report! Because most of the admin has now been done, this month I had a lot more time to explore Germany, so would be better to start than with Oktoberfest?

    Almost everyone has heard something about Oktoberfest. It occurs in Munich for about 2.5 weeks every year. Many are dressed in the traditional clothing of Bayern, and everyone drinks Beer – after all, Oktoberfest is the international Beer festival. Millions of people come every year from all over Germany and all over the World to experience the festival. This year, there were 6.3 million visitors! The entire festival was very impressive. The size (although I knew how big it was) was surprising, and the 1L Beers glasses were much larger and heavier than expected! Although Oktoberfest Munich is the original, cities all over the world do their own small versions. In fact, Darmstadt too does an Oktoberfest, which will be taking place this weekend. I will definitely be going, and comparing it with the original in Munich.

    Other things have also happened this month, for example my course has finally started! This of course means there is a lot to do, from choosing courses, to sports, and other clubs. One club I would be very interested in participating in, would be “Dart”. This is the motor racing team of TU Darmstadt, where every year students build an electric car that is raced against other universities. I know about this competition from my UK university, however I get the impression that German teams are larger and invest more time in their cars. There are even students that spend a whole year working on the car, instead of studying!

  • Jonathan Saad: Erster Monat in Deutschland – September 2018

    Willkommen bei meinem ersten Bericht aus Deutschland! Ich bin schon seit vier Wochen in Darmstadt, wo ich jetzt ein ganzes Jahr bei der Technischen Universität Darmstadt System Ingenieurwissenschaften studieren werde. Darmstadt ist eine mittelgroße Stadt (150,000 Einwohner) die südlich von Frankfurt liegt. Die Stadt ist eine schöne Mischung von neu und alt, das Darmstadtium liegt zum Beispiel fast neben dem Darmstadt Landesmuseum. Obwohl ich dem Ingenieurwissenschaftenstudium in Darmstadt noch nicht angefangen habe, bin ich schon jeden Tag in der Uni. Wir machen nämlich vier Wochen lang einen Deutsch Intensivkurs. Der Kurs soll alle fördern, diejenigen die noch nichts gelernt haben und diejenigen, die fast fliessend sind ebenso. Der Kurs läuft nur Morgens, also gibt es allen auch genügend Zeit um das was man beim Umzug und studieren in ein fremdes Land sortieren muss zu erledigen. Ich habe schon viele tolle International Studenten kennengelernt und habe mit denen schon viel in Darmstadt unternommen. Zum Beispiel, hat die Uni eine Schatzsuche organisiert, durch den man Darmstadt ein bisschen explorieren mussten.

    Ein wichtiger Grund, warum ich im Ausland studieren wollte war, dass ich Studenten mit ganz andere Erfahrungen kennenlernen wollte. Die Erfahrungen die jede Person hat bestimmen viel davon wie sie die Welt sehen und bei knapp hundert internationale Studenten gibt es viele Ausblicke, die ich noch nie gehört habe. In dem Deutschkurs haben wir Diskussionen über Kontroverse Themen geführt und da finde ich immer sehr interessant die Meinungen anderer Studenten zu hören.

    Also insgesamt, war dieser Monat ziemlich hektisch. Jetzt das aber fast aller Papierkram gemacht ist, gibt es schön Pläne für die nächste Wochenende… Nächsten Monat nämlich… Oktoberfest! Bis nächsten Monat!

    Welcome to my first report from Germany! I’ve been in Germany for four weeks so far, and will be studying Systems Engineering at TU Darmstadt for the next year. Darmstadt is a middle-sized city of 150,000 residents, and is a little south of Frankfurt. The town has a mix of old and new, for example the Darmstadtium and the Landesmusem are almost next to each other. I haven’t actually started my course yet, however I am at the university every day. The reason is that we are all doing a four week long intensive German course. The course should challenge everyone, from the students who have never studied German before, to those who are almost fluent. Since the course only runs during the mornings, there is plenty of time to sort out all the admin that comes with moving and studying in a foreign country. I’ve already met many great international students, and have been able to experience Darmstadt with them. One activity was a treasure hunt organised by the university, which gave us a great opportunity to explore Darmstadt.

    One important reason for me for studying abroad was meeting students with completely different life experiences. With close to a hundred international students, there is an incredible range of experiences and ways of thinking that I haven’t experienced yet. As part of the German course, we’ve been discussing some controversial issues. With so many different opinions and experiences, I find these discussions incredibly interesting.

    So, overall this month has been quite hectic. However, now that all the admin has been completed, we’ve already started planning how we’ll experience Germany in the coming weeks… next month… Oktoberfest! Until next month!

  • Jacob Lloyd: Germany, September 2018

    Vor ca. 2 Wochen, bin ich Jena verlassen, aber als ich noch da gelebt, habe ich ein Wochenende in Köln mit meiner Freundin verbracht, weil wir da nie gewesen haben. Wir haben den berühmten Dom und ein paar die anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten gesehen z.B. Wir haben auch der Zoo besucht, der viel Spaβ war. Ich habe sogar eine kleine Antiquitätengeschäft in der Nähe von dem Hotel besucht und ein schönes Kristallglas gekauft um nach Hause zu nehmen. Es ist immer eine gute Idee, die Nebenstraβen zu erkunden, weil man eine andere Seite der Stadt sehen kann und am besten neuen Orten entdecken.

    Jetzt bin ich in meiner neuen Wohnung in Stuttgart eingezogen und am Montag fange ich mein Praktikum bei Bosch an. Es war viel schwieriger als ich gedacht habe, eine Wohnung in Stuttgart zu finden, weil es so viel Leute in der gleichen Position gibt und Wohnungen sind so beschränkt. Eventuelle habe ich eine 10- Zimmer Wohnung gefunden, nach ca. eine Woche in einem Airbnb, das Ihrer bester Freund in eine neue Stadt kann sein. Mein Zimmer ist wirklich schön, der glücklich ist, weil ich hier das ganze Jahr bleiben muss! Ich habe nur fünf meine Mitbewohner getroffen, aber sind sie so weit super nett und sozial. Einer von Ihnen macht auch ein Praktikum bei Bosch und er lebt hier seit 3 Monaten also er hat mir viel über die Firma und Stuttgart erzählt.

    Ich habe keine Zweifel, dass die nächste 12 Monaten Eine Herausforderung wird sein aber wird es gleichzeitig viele Gelegenheiten anbieten. Der John Speak Trust hat überlebenswichtig für meine Reise gewesen und es war mir eine Freude, meinen monatlichen Berichten für der Website zu schreiben.

    I left Jena two weeks ago, but while I was still living there I spent a weekend in Cologne with my girlfriend, as we had never been there. We saw the famous Cathedral along with a few of the other sights, eg. we also visited the zoo, which was great fun. I even visited a little antique shop nearby to the hotel and bought a lovely crystal glass to take home. It is always a good idea to explore the side streets, as you can see the city in a different way and discover the best new places.

    I have now moved into my new flat in Stuttgart and I start my Placement with Bosch on Monday. It was a lot harder than I thought to find a flat in Stuttgart, because so many people are in the same position as me and housing is limited. I eventually found a 10-room flat after around a week in an Airbnb, which can be your best friend in a new city. My room is really nice, which is lucky as I have to stay here for the full year! I have only met two of my flatmates but so far they are very nice and social. One is also doing a placement with Bosch and has been living here for 3 months so has told me much about the company and Stuttgart.

    I have no doubt that the next 12 months will be a challenge, but it will simultaneously offer many opportunities.

  • Jacob Lloyd: Jena, Germany – August 2018

    Diesem Monat hat ein bisschen ruhiger als normal gewesen, weil ich meine BWL Prüfungen gehabt habe. Deshalb musste ich immer vorbereiten, jedoch, weil ich keine mehr Vorlesungen zu besuchen hatte, hat meine Vorbereitung pur viele Übungen und Wiederholung gewesen.  Meine Prüfungen haben alles entweder 1 oder 1,5 Stunde dauert, die ziemlich kurz ist, besonders für deutsche Klausuren. Jedoch, habe ich meine Prüfungen ziemlich schwierig gefunden, also muss ich warten, meine Noten zu bekommen, bevor ich eine Idee, ob ich gut oder schlecht gemacht habe.

    Sind meistens meine Freunde schon zu Hause gefahren, da sie keine Prüfungen machen müssen, weil sie keine Geschäftsmodule haben. Deshalb, im Moment ist Jena wirklich ruhig und ich finde es komisch, die Straβen zu wandern mit fast niemand mitzusprechen. Wir sind alles zusammen für ein letztes Getränk und Mal nach „Cheers“ gegangen. Cheers ist eine lokale amerikanische Bar, die am bestem Burgers und Nachos verkaufen. Wir haben alles unsere Lieblingsgeschichte von unsere Erasmus Semester erzählt und wir haben alles geplant, uns in der Zukunft zu treffen.

    Ich habe auch ein paar Interviews für eine Pflichtsjahrpraktikum gemacht und endgültig habe ich bei Bosch in Stuttgart akzeptiert gewesen. Ich fange am 15. September an, also jetzt suche ich für eine Wohnung. Leider muss ich Jena verlassen, um ganzen Deutschland zu sehen. Nächste Woche werde ich mit meinem Bruder in Stuttgart treffen, um ein paar Wohnungen zu besuchen und auch ein oder zwei Getränke zu trinken. Mein Bruder ist Tennistrainer bei dem Groβbrittanien Team und er wird in Ulm für ein Turnier sein also ist es sehr einfach nach Stuttgart zu fahren, aber muss ich leider ca. 6 Stunde mit dem Bus fahren. Danach habe ich keine Ahnung, was ich machen will aber habe ich Freunde, die überall leben also ich werde vielleicht ein paar neuen Städte besuchen, bevor ich fange meine Arbeit an.

    Ich habe eine wirklich ausgezeichnete Zeit in Jena gehabt und ich werde vielleicht wiederkommen, wenn ich Zeit habe, oder sogar meine Masterarbeit zu machen. Bis dahin, werde ich einfach Deutschland genieβen.

    ENGLISH:

    This month has been a little quieter than usual, as I have had my Business Studies exams. Therefore, I had to prepare constantly, however because I didn’t have any more lectures to attend my preparation has been purely lots of exercises and revision. My exams have all been either 1 or 1.5 hours long, which is rather short especially for German exams. However, I did find my exams quite difficult, so I have to wait to receive my results before I can have an idea of whether I have done well or not.

    Most of my friends have already gone home as they don’t have to do exams due to them not having any business modules. Therefore, Jena is really quiet at the moment and I find strange to walk the streets with hardly anyone to talk to. We all went for one last drink and meal together in “Cheers”. Cheers is the local American bar that sells the best burgers and nachos. We all told our favourite stories from our Erasmus semester and we all planned to meet up in the future.

    I have also done a few Interviews for my year-long Internship that is part of my course and finally got accepted by Bosch in Stuttgart. I will start on the 15th September, so I am currently searching for a flat. Unfortunately, I must leave Jena, in order to see the rest of Germany. Next week I will meet my brother in Stuttgart to have a look at flats and also have a drink or two. My brother is a tennis coach for Team GB and is in Ulm for a tournament, so it is really simple to get to Stuttgart but unfortunately, I have to get a 6-hour bus. Afterwards I have no idea what I want to do but I have friends who live all over Germany, so I will possibly see a few more new cities before I start working.

    I really have had an excellent time in Jena and will maybe return if I have time or even do my master’s here. Until then I will simply enjoy Germany.

    Seit ich meiner erste Bericht geschreiben habe, habe ich einige groβartige neue Erfahrungen gehabt, dabei meine Wortschatz und meine Wissen, das Kultur ständig erweitert, für nicht nur Deutshland sondern auch Länder weltweit.

    Ein Grund dafür ist das „Erasmus Student Network“, das jeden Mittwoch eine „Länderabend“ veranstalten. Jede woche eine neue Person eine Darstellung über ihre Heimatland präsentiert, mit dem Ziel einem Einblick darin geben, dass man nicht bei Wikipedia finden kann. Als ich mich freiwillig ein Abend zu präsentieren gemeldet habe, habe ich die Aufgabe zu eine Darstellung ca. 20 minuten lang präsentieren gewesen, mit Schwerpunkt auf Nordengland und Manchester. Jedoch, habe ich auch persönliche Punkte über andere Städte landesweit enthalten, dass ich eine Beziehung mit habe. Der Abend hat mit einem richtigen Geschmack der Nord abgeschlossen (Pommes, Käse und Soβe). Natürlich war es ein Erfolg.

    Ich habe auch mit meinen Studien Schritt gehalten, mit regelmäβigen Spracheklassen und BWL Vorlesungen, die herausfordernd und vorteilhaft gewesen sind. Ich habe dieses ergänzt, mit meinem neuem Hobby, deutscher Films zu schauen. Es ist eine tolle Methode meine Hörfähigkeiten zu verbessern, obwohl die deutscher Untertitel noch gebraucht sind. Soweit, sind meine Lieblingsfilme „WHOAMI“, „Das Leben der anderen“ und „Gegen die Wand“, die wilkommmene Änderungen im Vergleich zu die üblichen Themen sind. Deutscher Zeitungen, z.B. Nationale Zeitungen wie „Die Welt“ und Lokales Zeitungen wie „Thüringer Allgemeine“, haben auch vorteilhaft zu meinen Studien sein, weil mit sozioökonomische Fragen Schritt halten, ist ein Groβteil mein Kurs.

    Bald, gibt es eine ESN Reise nach Prag und ich werde auch nach Nürnberg erkunden, also gibt es kein Zweifell, dass meine nächste Bericht mehr als ereignisreich sein werden.

    ENGLISH:

    Since writing my first report I have had some great new experiences, while constantly expanding both my vocabulary and knowledge of the culture of not only Germany but countries across the world.

    This is partly due to the Erasmus Student Network who host a “Länderabend” every Wednesday. Each week a new person does a presentation about their home country, with the aim of giving an insight that could not be found on Wikipedia. After putting myself forward to present a night myself, I was tasked with creating a presentation around 20 minutes long, choosing to focus on the North of England and Manchester. However, I also included personal notes about other cities across the UK that I have a connection with. The night was concluded by providing all of the Erasmus students a true taste of the north (Chips, cheese and gravy). Needless to say, this went down very well.

    I have also been keeping up with my studies, with regular language classes and business lectures, which have been both challenging and beneficial. This has been supplemented by a new hobby of watching German films which has been a great way to improve my listening skills, despite still needing the German subtitles. Some of my favourites so far include “WHOAMI”, “The Lives of Others” and “Head on” which are a welcome change to the topics I am used to. Reading German newspapers, both National such as “Die Welt” and local such as “Thüringer Allgemeine”, have been advantageous to my studies as keeping up to date on socio-economic issues, is a large part of my course.

     

    There is soon to be an ESN trip to Prague and I will also be going to explore Nuremberg, so I have no doubt my next report will be more than eventful enough!

    ENGLISH

    My first report is being written just under two weeks into my Erasmus+ undergraduate semester at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, Germany; studying the course International Business with German. I am attending three business modules (Macro Economics, Management and Human Resource Management) all taught in German, in addition to language classes.

    Actually getting here was the first task, as having only five days previous experience in Germany navigating the trains from Berlin Airport to Jena was definitely an experience. This was mainly due to the ticket machines being slightly confusing and I’m still unsure how they work if I’m honest. Something to learn in the weeks to come!

    Stepping off the train I was unsure what to make of the street that greeted me, littered with old blocks of flats in varying shades of yellow and orange and I remain unconvinced the colours will grow on me. Once finding my flat I was greeted by a lovely woman, who let me in and gave me the keys. A top floor room in Jena offers quite a view, as I face one side of the hills that surround the city which has offered great views to two thunderstorms in the past two weeks alone.

    I have met a wide variety of people since coming to Jena, mainly through my German classes and the Erasmus Student Network, where so far I have counted 15 – 20 represented nations including Russia, South Korea, Georgia, USA, Spain, Italy and Armenia to name but a few. However with four out of five flatmates being German I still have plenty of opportunities to practice my language skills when out of lectures. So far there have been many social events, such as Barbeques in the park, while also getting started with lectures which are challenging but interesting.

    So far so good!                 

    GERMAN

    Meine erste Bericht kommt nur weniger als zwei woche innerhalb meine ERASMUS+ Bachelor Abschluss Semester an der Friedrich-Schiller Universität Jena, Deutschland, um Internationaler  BWL mit Deutsch zu studieren. Ich muβ drei Geschäftsmodulen besuchen ( Makroökonomik, Management und HRM ). Alles sind auf deutsch gelehrt, zusätzlich Sprache klasse.

    Die erste Herausforderung war wirklich hier zu kommen, mit nur fünf Tagen Erfahrung in Deutschland, zu fahren von Berlin Flughafen bis Jena was unbedingt eine Erfahrung. Wahrscheinlich, weil die Kartemachinen ein bischen verwirrend war und in aller Ehrlichkeit, bin ich noch unsicher wie sie arbeiten. Etwas zu lernen für die nächsten paar Wochen!

    Als ich auf der Zug getretten bin, war ich unsicher mit der Straβe, dass mich begrüβt hat. Es hatte viele älte Wohnungen in Schattierungen von Orange und Gelb. Ich bleibe nicht überzeugt, dass die Farben auf mich wachse wird. Als ich meine Wohnung gefunden habe, war ich mit eine Schöne Frau begrüβt, die die Schlüssel hat mich gegeben.  Eine oberste Etage Zimmer  in Jena bietet eine schöne Aussicht an, denn ich eine seit die Berge sehen kann, dass die Stadt umgehen. Es hat eine tolle Sicht für zwei Gewitter angeboten, in nur die letztes zwei Woche.

    Ich habe eine weite Vielfalt von Menschen  kennengelernt, seit wohne ich in Jena. Ich habe meistens durch meine deutsche klasse und das Erasmus Student Network getroffen, das so weit habe ich ca. 15 – 20 Länder gezählt, einschlieβlich Russland, Sud Korea, Georgien, USA, Spanien, Italien und Armenien  zu nur ein bischen namen. Jedoch, habe ich schon viele Möglichkeiten zu meine Sprachfähigkeiten zu üben, wenn ich keine Vorlesungen haben, weil vier von fünf meiner Mitbewohner Deutscher sind.  So weit gab es viele gesellschaftliches Ereignisse z.B. Grillen im Park, während auch Vorlesungen anfangen, die herausforderuglich aber interessant sind.

    So weit, so gut!

    Thesis schreiben, Feuerwerk und neue Freunde

    Dieser Monat war ziemlich langsam. Viele meiner Freunde und Kollegen haben Last-Minute-Städtereisen und Kurzurlaube auf dem Balkan gemacht. So bin ich hier in Berlin stecken und ich versuche dass meine MA Thesis fertig zu bekommen. Ich versuch so viel von Berlin in diese Monaten aufnehmen kann, bevor ich nach Gross Britannien zurück fahren. In diesem Monat war ziemlich großes für Feuerwerk. Ich wohne neben der Berlin Messe / ICC-Komplex, der eine riesige Messetagen / Konferenz-Komplex mit einem Scheppern Kontrast von architektonischen Stilen ist. Die Internationales Congress Centrum, oder ICC sieht aus wie etwas direkt aus einem Weltraum-Oper 1970, die über die Straße Brücken in den Stil der 1920 Architektur des Haupt Messe-Komplex. Wenn Sie den Film Valkyrie sah, war die Messe in wenigen ‚Establishing Shots’ von Berlin eingesetzt, man denke nur ‘viele Fahnenmasten “. Wie auch immer, wie mein Zimmer sieht auf den Bereich heraus hinter den wichtigsten Messe Gebäuden ich eine kostenlose Feuerwerk gehabt haben meine Freitagabend in den letzten paar Wochen zu beginnen.

    Vor kurzem ich habe einen Tandempartner mein Deutsch zu üben getroffen, wie in Berlin es notorisch leicht ins Englische zu schlüpfen und man brauchen nichts Ihr Deutsch zu verwenden. Also habe ich beschlossen, dass trotz Klassen und die gelegentliche Treffen mit meinen Freunden, ich brauche ein bisschen Gas geben. Wir trafen uns zufällig in einem Café Ich habe versucht, Spiegel zu lesen und zu finden, dass ich das Wörterbuch mehr als die Zeitschrift las. Nach einer Weile ein Mädchen, fragte auf dem Tisch neben mir saß, wenn es etwas Interessantes in der Kopie war, glaube ich, dass sie es tat Hälfte als Scherz und halb zu sehen, ob ich posierte. Ich antwortete mit einem kurzen, und vielleicht ein wenig verstümmelt Zusammenfassung der Hauptgeschichte, etwas über die Gefahren von Smartphones (langsame Nachrichten Tag glaube ich) und dann haben wir uns zu reden. Es stellte sich heraus sie war in meinem Alter und hatte gerade ihre BA abgeschlossen und wurde ein Praktikum bei einem lokalen Gefängnis tun als Psychologe arbeiten. Es war die deutsche ich in eine Weile, und mein Gehirn gesprochen hatte, wurde gebraten, aber wir waren uns einig hin und wieder zu treffen, so dass sie mich mit meinem deutschen helfen könnte, und ich mit ihr Englisch / Spanisch.

    ENGLISH

    This month has been a pretty slow one.  Many of my friends and workmates have taken last minute city breaks and getaways to the Balkans. So I am left here in Berlin trying to get my thesis finished and soaking up as much of Berlin as I can in these last few months before I head back to the UK. This month has been a pretty big one for fireworks. I live next to the Berlin Messe/ICC complex, which is a huge tradefair/conference complex with a clanging contrast of architectural styles. The International Congress Centre, or ICC looks like something straight out of a 1970’s space opera, which bridges over the street into the 1920’s style architecture of the main Messe complex. If you saw the film Valkyrie, the Messe was used in a few establishing shots of Berlin, just think ‘lots of flag poles’. Anyway as my room looks out toward the area behind the main Messe buildings I have had a free firework show to start my Friday nights for the past few weeks.

    I recently met a tandem partner to practice my German, as in Berlin it is notoriously easy to slip into English and never really need to use your German. So I have decided that, despite classes and the occasional get together with my friends, I need to up my game. We met by coincidence in a café I was trying to read Spiegel and finding that I was reading the dictionary more than the magazine. After a while a girl who was sitting on the table next to me asked if there was anything interesting in the copy, I think she did it half as a joke and half to see if I was posing. I answered with a brief, and maybe somewhat garbled summary of the main story, something about the dangers of smartphones (slow news day I guess) and then we got talking. Turned out she was my age and had just finished her BA and was doing an internship at a local prison working as a psychologist. It was the most German I had talked in a while and my brain was fried, but we agreed to meet up every now and again so that she could help me with my German and I with her English/Spanish.
