  • Garden of Gethsemane – جثسيماتي: Joseph Brazier – Jerusalem, March 2019

    This month I began my internship at the Truman Institute in addition to my studies in university. The institute was the first institute in the Middle East dedicated to the advancement of peace in the region. My role in the institute is as a research assistant to Dr. Michael Tanchum, where I am writing reports on many topics – currently I am researching Iran’s economic and political influence in Iraq, and how this affects the region. The work is very intense, but I am able to use my knowledge of Arabic to help with the research and so I’m able to develop my language skills while also working.

    Despite my busy schedule, I was able to visit the Garden of Gethsemane, located just outside the old city walls in East Jerusalem. The name “Gethsemane” comes from the Hebrew for “Oil Press”, and today there are still many olive trees in the garden. Researches from Italy have found that the trees in the garden date from the Middle Ages, making them some of the oldest examples of Olive Tree in the world. Famously this was the place where Jesus was betrayed by Judas before his crucifixion and it is still an important Christian site today; when I was there, there were a number of American and Russian tourists who came to visit the famous site for religious reasons.

    Now to finish, the weather in Jerusalem is terrible, when I came to the Middle East I expected the weather to be hot and pleasant, but instead it’s cold, windy and miserable. Living on Mount Scopus, the situation is worse, so my next big mission is to buy a new coat for this weather!

    الشهر هاد، بلشت التدريب تاعي في معهد “ترومان” بالإضافة لدراستي بالجامعة. المعهد كان المعهد الأول بالشرق الأوسط المخصص بالنهوض بالسلام في المنطقة. دوري بالمعهد مساعد البحث مع دكتور “مايكال تنحوم”، انا بكتب تقارير عن كتير مواضيع، عم ببحث النفوذ الاقتصادي والسياسي لإيران في العراق، وكيف هاد بأثّر ع المنطقة. الشغل كتير مكثف، بس بقدر استعمل معلوماتي العربية عشان اساعد في البحث، فبقدر اطور قدراتي اللغوية بنفس وقت الشغل.

    رغم جدولي المشغول، قدرت أزور جثسيماني، بقع برا حوائط وسط البلد في شرق القدس. الاسم “جثسيماني” عبري لـ”عصارة زيوت”، ولليوم في كتير أشجار زيتون في الحديقة. باحثين من إيطاليا كشفوا أن الأشجار بالجنينة من العصور الوسطى، يعني أنهم بعض من أقدم شجر الزيتون بالعالم. معروف انو هاد هو المكان الي يسوع انخان فيه من يهوذا قبل صلبه وهو لسا موقع مسيحي مهم لحد اليوم. لما كنت هناك، كان في كتير سياح أمريكين وروسين اجوا عشان يزوروا الموقع لأسباب دينية.

    هلأ، لننهي، الجو بالقدس فظيع، لما جيت عالشرق الأوشط، توقعت إنو الجو يكون حر ولطيف، بس هلا برد وعواصف كتير. أنا ساكن بجبل المشارف، الوضع أسوء، فمهمتي الكبيرة الجاية هي اني اشتري كبود جديد للجو هاد!

    بعد عطلة صغيرة بالبيت لعيد الميلاد المجيد رجعت عالشرق الأوسط، بس هلأ انا بإسرائيل. صارلي مشتاق لاردن كتير، بس لما وصلت عإسرائيل، حسيت كتير أحسن عكل شي – كل أصحابي الأردنيين ببعد مني تلات ساعة بسيارة هلأ، وبإسرائيل بقدر احسن عربيتي وعبريتي بنفس الوقت.

    لا لسا رجعت عالقدس بمكان الدرس – جامعة العبرية، الفصل ببلش في 23 يناير. فصارلي أسافر حول إسرائيل بالأيام قبل دارسي بالجامعة. أولا كنت بتل أبيب وين فرجيت أمي وتيتى حول مدينة قديمة يافا. هو مثال ممتاز المجموعة، في مساجد، كنس يهودية وكنائس بجنب بعض، والمسرح “يهودي-عربي” بقع هناك بالمدينة القديمة كمان. زرت إسرائيل كتير مرات، والتقيت بأصحابي يلي ساكنين بتل أبيب وانبسطت عالحياة الليلية يلي المدينة مشهورة لها.

    خدنا مشوار عالناصرة كمان بشمال إسرائيل عشان نشوف عالمعالم التاريخية يلي يعزى أصولهم بالنصوص الدينية. أنا مش متدين، وما بصدقش أن كنائس مبنية عالمعالم زي “بيت ميريام” أو “كنيسة التضاعف” جد بالمواقع الصحيحة، بس تاريخ المنطقة والطبيعة الحوة تاع الجليل كان رحلة العمر. كمان كان شي حلو لما قدرت احكي مع عرب بشمال إسرائيل بالعربي، ومش بالعبري بس، حين كنت اتحدث العربيه مع العرب كانو يفرحون لاني شخص اجنبي واتحدث لغتهم.
    بعدين، رح أزور عحيفا، وبعدين القدس، وين رح ابلش دراسي بالعبري وعربي بجامعة العبرية.

    ENGLISH:

    After a short break home for Christmas, I have returned to the Middle East, but this time I’m in Israel. I have been missing Jordan a lot, but upon arriving in Israel I feel much better about everything – all my Jordanian friends are now 3 hours away by car, and now in Israel I can practice my Arabic and my Hebrew together.

    I have not yet arrived in my place of study in Jerusalem – the Hebrew University, where the term begins on the 23rd January. So, I’ve been travelling around Israel in the days before my university studies. Firstly, I was in Tel-Aviv, where I showed my mother and grandmother (who decided to accompany me for the first week) around the old city of Jaffa. It is an excellent example of community, with Mosques, Synagogues and Churches standing side by side – and the Jewish-Arab theatre is also located in the old city too. I’ve visited Israel a number of times before, and so I also had the opportunity to catch up with my old friends who lived in Tel-Aviv and enjoy the famous nightlife for which the city is known.

    We also took a trip to Nazareth in the North of Israel in order to see the historical sites which have their origins in the religious texts. I am not religious myself, and I didn’t believe that churches built on sites such as “Mary’s House” or “Church of the Multiplication” are actually in the right locations, but the history of the region, and the beautiful nature of the Galilee were an amazing trip of a lifetime. It was also nice was being able to speak to Arabs in Northern Israel in Arabic, rather than Hebrew, and they seemed happy because a foreigner spoke to them in their own language.

    Next I will go to Haifa, and then Jerusalem, where I will begin my studies in Hebrew and Arabic at Hebrew University.
