  • Hasta Luego España: Rebekah Willett, Spain – January 2017

    Durante los últimos seis meses he trabajado en una empresa de turismo en Palma de Mallorca, España y porque este tiempo ha casi terminado, quiero reflexionar sobre mi tiempo aquí y las cosas que he aprendido.

    Cuando llegué, ya tenía una opinión sobre la vida en la isla. Sabía que es un destino de vacaciones para muchos turistas británicos, así que me pareció que la isla sería muy turístico y comercializado. Es cierto que en el centro de las grandes ciudades este es el caso, sin embargo, no tiene que viajar muy lejos para encontrar algunos pequeños pueblos que son menos turísticos. También pensaba que no sería la oportunidad de practicar mi español, a causa de la cantidad de turistas, pero no fue el caso. La gente estaba impresionada cuando intentaba a hablar en español y me alentaba a seguir hablando y practicando el idioma.

    También he aprendido mucho en la empresa donde trabajo. Cuando empecé a trabajar allí me pareció muy difícil de hablar español porque me faltaba la confianza, pero cuando pasé más tiempo allí, encontré que mi confianza aumentaba y ahora intento hablar más en español con mis colegas. También he aprendido mucho sobre la manera en que una empresa multinacional trabaja en el sector del turismo y mejoré mis habilidades de computación y comunicación.

    En mi tiempo libre tuve la oportunidad de visitar diferentes partes de la isla, incluyendo Soller, Alcudia y Valdemossa. Estos pueblos tienen muchas atracciones fascinantes, incluyendo el tranvía tradicional en Soller y el monasterio en Valdemossa. También tuve la oportunidad de visitar Barcelona para un fin de semana y vi muchos de los edificios increíbles de Gaudí. Fue genial a ver estas ciudades interesantes y ver las muchas atracciones únicas.

    He tenido un momento increíble aquí en España, tanto en Mallorca como en León, y todo el mundo me ha hecho sentir bienvenido en este país. He tenido la oportunidad de aprender español, conocer gente nueva, viajar, y trabajar en una empresa multinacional. Quiero terminar esta entrada del blog con un enorme agradecimiento a John Speak Trust por ayudarme a tener esta oportunidad de experimentar este país y su cultura diversa. Espero volver en el futuro y ver mucho más del país.

    ENGLISH VERSION

    For the past six months I have been working in a tourism company in Palma de Mallorca, Spain and as this time has nearly ended, I wanted to reflect on my time here and the things I have learnt.

    When I arrived, I already had an opinion of what life on the island would be like. I knew that it is a holiday destination for many British tourists so I felt that the island would be very touristy and commercialised. Admittedly, in the centre of the big cities this is the case, however you don’t have to travel very far to find some little villages which are far less touristy.  I also thought that I wouldn’t have the opportunity, because of the amount of tourists, this was not the case. People were impressed when I spoke Spanish and would encourage me to continue speaking and practising the language.

    I have also learnt a lot at the company where I work. When I started working there I found it very difficult to speak Spanish because I lacked the confidence, but as I spent more time there I found my confidence increasing and now I try to speak more in Spanish with my colleagues. I have also learnt a lot about the way a multinational enterprise works in the tourism sector and improved on my computing and communication skills.

    In my free time I had the opportunity to visit different parts of the island, including Soller, Alcudia and Valdemossa. These villages have many fascinating attractions, including the old-fashioned tram in Soller and the monastery in Valdemossa. I even had the chance to visit Barcelona for a weekend and saw many of Gaudi’s incredible buildings. It was great to see these interesting cities and see the many unique attractions.

    I’ve had an amazing time here in Spain, both in Mallorca and in León, and everyone has made me feel so welcome in this country. I’ve had the opportunities to learn Spanish, meet new people, travel and work in a multinational enterprise. I want to finish this blog post with a huge thank you to the John Speak trust for helping me to have this opportunity to experience this country and its diverse culture.

    I hope to return in the future and see much more of the country.

    Los Problemas de Agua en Mallorca

    Este mes me pidieron que investigar el uso del agua en la isla de Mallorca y sobre los problemas de escasez de agua y cómo el gobierno local y nacional combate los problemas. Yo sé de hablar con la gente en mi trabajo que hay una escasez de agua en la isla debido al clima cálido y la falta de lluvias, especialmente en los meses de verano, sin embargo, no tenía ni idea de hasta qué punto. Este año Mallorca ha tenido la peor escasez de agua en 10 años y muchas partes de la isla han tenido una alerta sequía. Después de leer más sobre el tema, descubrí que el turismo también juega un papel grande en la escasez de agua.

    Aunque hay una gran cantidad de lluvia durante el otoño y el invierno en Mallorca, durante los meses de verano hay muy poca lluvia en la isla y, por tanto, esto lleva a la escasez. Ya que es una isla es muy difícil acceder el agua de otras ciudades y regiones de España. El turismo también es un drenaje del suministro de agua porque turistas demandan un suministro de agua fiable y limpia y también cosas como piscinas y campos de golf verdes. Los turistas también significan que hay personas adicionales que consumen agua. La temporada de vacaciones en Mallorca es durante la época más seca que además ejerce presión sobre las reservas de agua. Los turistas suelen visitar las zonas costeras sin embargo las principales reservas de agua de la isla se encuentran en el interior de la isla en las montañas que también significa que el agua tiene que transportar en grandes cantidades.

    Varios métodos han sido utilizados para retener suficiente agua para la isla. El primer método utilizado fue el aumento de la extracción de los acuíferos de la isla sin embargo, fue muy malo para el medio ambiente. Un otro método utilizado fue la construcción de dos embalses en las montañas para guardar y recoger el agua. Esto funcionó bastante bien hasta que había varios años con menos lluvia y por lo tanto no había agua para ser recogida. Este año algunos partes de la isla han tenido cortes de agua durante la noche en un intento de ahorrar agua, y otras partes han tenido que limitar su consumo de agua. El gobierno también utiliza la desalinización para combatir la escasez de agua, sin embargo, esto puede ser muy caro. Hay una planta desalinizadora se ubica en la isla que bombea el agua salada y después del proceso el agua es potable.

    This month I was asked to look into the water use on the island of Mallorca and about the issues of water shortages and how the local and national government deals with the problems. I know from just speaking with people at my work that there is a water shortage on the island due to the hot climate and lack of rainfall especially in the summer months however I had no idea as to what extent. This year Mallorca has had the worst water shortage in 10 years and several parts of the island have been on drought alert. After looking further into the issue I discovered that tourism also plays a part in the water shortage.

    Even though there is a lot of rain during the autumn and the winter in Mallorca, during the summer months there is very little rain on the island and this therefore leads to shortages. As it is an island it is very difficult to access water from other cities and regions in Spain. Tourism is also a drain on the islands water supply as tourists demand a clean reliable water supply and also things like swimming pools and green golf courses. The tourists also mean that there are additional people to supply water to. The holiday season in Mallorca typically occurs during the driest season which additionally puts pressure on the water supply. The tourists tend to visit the coastal areas however the main supplies of water on the island are found further inland in the mountains which also means that the water has to be transported in great quantities.

    Several methods have been used to retain enough water for the island. The first method used was the increase of extraction from aquifers on the island however it was very bad for the environment. Another method used was to build 2 reservoirs in the mountains to store and gather water. This worked quite well until there were several years with reduced rainfall and hence there was no water to be gathered. This year certain parts of the island have had overnight water cuts in an attempt to save water and other parts have had to limit their water usage. The government also uses desalination to combat water shortage however this can be expensive. There is a desalination plant situated on the island which pumps salt water and after the process it is drinkable.

    Castillos y Amigas

    Este mes Pasado ha sido un mes de ajuste para mí. Después de haber trabajado aquí por más de un mes, finalmente me siento instalado en mi nuevo trabajo y en la vida en Palma de Mallorca. Mi hermana y su amigo me visitaron para una semana este mes que me dio la oportunidad de ir a ver algunos de los lugares de interés que no había visitado todovía en Palma.

    Uno de estos lugares que no había visitado fue el Castillo de Bellver, situado fueras del centro de Palma en una colina con vistas a la ciudad y la campiña adyacente. Decidimos andar al castillo desde el centro de Palma, que en los 30 grados de calor es un logro. Llegamos al hermoso parque donde el castillo se encuentra y nos enfrentamos a cientos de escaleras que llevaban al castillo. En la subida pasamos una antigua iglesia con vistas al centro de la ciudad y el mar. Cuando finalmente llegamos a la parte superior de las escaleras vimos el precioso castillo de cuento que hizo que el paseo vale la pena. El castillo precioso de forma redonda, con sus cuatro torres y su foso se quedó con vistas a Palma.

    El castillo tiene 3 plantas que el público puede visitar; la planta baja, donde hay una plataforma que incluye actuaciones a menudo, la primera planta y el techo con vistas espectaculares de la ciudad, el mar, las montañas y el campo. También hay un museo con la historia del castillo.

    Aparte de la belleza del castillo, hay una historia de interés histórico. Originalmente, el castillo fue utilizado por los Reyes de Mallorca cuando estaban en la isla, sin embargo, también era una prisión, una prisión que tenía varias prisioneros políticos importantes, incluyendo Gasper Melchor de Jovellanos. El museo en el castillo habla de estos puntos históricos.

    Hoy en día el castillo es propiedad de la ciudad de Palma y muchas personas vienen y visitan. También se utiliza para eventos públicos y ceremonias que tienen lugar en el patio.

    ENGLISH VERSION

    This past month has been a month of adjustment for me. Having worked here for over a month now I finally feel settled into my new job and into life in Palma de Mallorca. My sister and her friend visited me for a week this month which gave me the chance to go a see some of the places that I hadn’t visited yet in Palma.

    One of these sights that I hadn’t visited was Bellver Castle, situated outside the centre of Palma on a hill overlooking the city and the surrounding countryside. We decided to walk to the castle from the centre of Palma, which in the 30 degree heat here is an achievement. We reached the beautiful park where the castle is situated and were confronted by hundreds of steps leading up to the castle. On the climb we passed an old church with views over the trees of the city centre and the sea. When we finally reached the top of stairs we saw the beautiful fairytale castle which made the walk up there definitely worth it. The gorgeous round shaped castle with its four turrets and a moat stood there overlooking Palma.

    The castle has 3 floors which the public can visit; the ground floor where there is a stage where people perform regularly, the first floor and the roof with spectacular views of the city, the sea, the mountains and the countryside. There is also a museum featuring the history of the castle.

    Aside from the beauty of the castle, there is an interesting historical story. Originally the castle was used by the Kings of Mallorca when they were on the island, however it was also a prison which held several important political figures including Gasper Melchor de Jovellanos. The museum in castle covers these historical points.

    Nowadays the castle is owned by the city of Palma and many people come and visit it. It is also used for public events and ceremonies which take place in the courtyard.

  • Amy Clark – Case Study France and Spain 2014-2015

    I can´t quite believe that my 18 months abroad are coming to an end, it only seems like 2 minutes since I was boarding the plane to Alicante in January 2014 to begin my Erasmus study period! I feel that my time abroad, in France and Spain has been the most beneficial part of my university course so far; not only has it allowed me to greatly improve my French and Spanish but I´ve also developed a variety of skills that are going to help me throughout the rest of my life! As a student from Sheffield Hallam University, now in my 3rd year, I jumped at this opportunity of being awarded a scholarship, as I knew it would be a big help towards various costs that travelling and working abroad would endeavor.

    My scholarship was split between my time in Montpellier, France and Palma De Mallorca, Spain, however during this time I was also able to travel to other places in Europe, making the most of the opportunities that I had. I managed to visit Bordeaux, Paris, Toulouse, Nimes and  Geneva whilst living in France, it´s been amazing to be able to travel and see so much in such a short time! As for my time here in Palma de Mallorca, I’ve spent my weekends exploring the beautiful island, hiring cars with new friends from all different backgrounds, visiting remote non-touristic places and generally experiencing the true Spanish culture. I´ve got to say that life on a Spanish island is definitely something I’d think about later on in life and Mallorca in particular is amazingly beautiful!

    Aside from all the exciting travelling, meeting new people and learning new things, there has of course been times when I’ve missed home, my friends and family and even once or twice when I have wished I could be back, but I know that this experience has had a huge impact on my life and on me as a person and I’m so grateful for the opportunity; I have no regrets about moving abroad and leaving my life in England behind as I know the positives have far outweighed the negatives! I’m looking forward to finishing my degree in Sheffield and moving on to bigger and better things!

    Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to the John Speak Scholarship Trust for giving me the great pleasure of being a part of their organisation for the last 10 months and would without a doubt, recommend it to anyone who is eligible to apply!

    Amy Clark – Palma de Mallorca – Abril 2015

    Estoy disfrutando mucho mi tiempo aquí; Palma es un lugar tan bonito, hay muchísimas cosas para hacer y ver y finalmente el tiempo esta increíble. Para Semana Santa mi novio vino aquí por 4 días, el vuelo fue un poco caro porque Semana Santa es una feria en Palma y hay muchas fiestas que duran casi dos semanas que significa que los precios siempre están altos. De todos modos, valió la pena porque no nos vimos para mucho tiempo y estaba muy bien para pasar algunos días juntos.  Cuando llegó el viernes fuimos a una restaurante que está situada en el puerto, se llama Mar de Nudos, al principio decidíamos solo tomar algo para beber pero cuando nos vimos la comida de los otros clientes nos cambiamos de idea! La comida estaba buenísima, una de las comidas mejores que hemos comido, además el tiempo estaba tan agregable y pasábamos un día estupendo.

    El sábado fuimos a una playa que se llama Ses Illetes, que está ubicada 30 minutes en bus del centro de Palma, está muy bonita, el mar es tan claro y las vistas son impresionantes. Cuando llegamos, tomamos algo en el bar y allí nos vimos el jugador de futbol famoso y estrella tv de ´A league of their own´, Jamie Redknapp en la playa con su familia, no podíamos creerlo, pero después nos descubrimos que él tiene una villa aquí.

    También, el sábado pasado mis amigos y yo alquilamos un minivan por todo el día, no estuve muy cara porque haya 9 personas para compartir el precio, que estuve bien. Nos visitamos dos playa tan bonitas, una de las dos es una playa totalmente natural, no hay bares, facilidades o algo así, ¡simplemente el mar, la arena y el sol! Mallorca verdaderamente es una isla bonita.

    Otra cosa interesante para mí fue el martes de esta semana, porque tenía la oportunidad de ir a un de los mejores hoteles de Melia que es 5 estrellas, que está situado al lado del mar con vistas panorámicas magnificentes. Fui con mi jefe porque ella ha organizado todo para este grande evento que fue para todos los jefes importantes y empleadores de Melia de todos los diferentes regiones. Mi jefe mi dije que sería muy interesante para asistir el evento para ver cómo se funcionan las cosas  y para aprender nuevas cosas de la empresa y del tema de Marketing Digital. Para el almuerzo haya un buffet de comida caliente y frio, postres y bebidas y todo estuve gratis. Fue muy interesante y beneficial para mí para escuchar a todas las presentaciones en español y también para participar en los workshops.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    I’m enjoying my time here; Palma is a beautiful place, there´s lots of things to do and see and finally, the weather is amazing! For Easter my boyfriend came here for 4 days, the flight was a little bit expensive because here in Palma Easter is a Bank Holiday and there´s lots of celebrations that last about 2 weeks which means that the prices are always quite high. Anyway, it was worth it as we hadn´t seen each other for a while and it was really nice to spend time together. When he arrived on Friday we went to a restaurant on the port, called Mar de Nudos, in the beginning we were just going to have a drink but when we saw the other customers food we changed our minds! The food was so nice, one of the best meals we have had, plus, the weather was great and we had a really nice day.

    Saturday we went to a beach called Ses Illetes, which is situated about 30 minutes from the centre of Palma, it´s so pretty, the sea is so clear and the views are amazing. When we arrived we had a drink in the bar and there we saw the famous football player and TV star of A league of their own´ Jamie Redknapp on the beach with his family, we couldn´t believe it, but later we found out that he has his own villa here in Palma.

    Also, last Saturday me and my friends hired a minivan for the day, it wasn´t very expensive because there were 9 people to share the price which was good. We visited 2 beautiful beaches, one of the two was completely natural, there weren´t any bars, facilities or anything like that, just the sea, the sand and the sun! Mallorca truly is a beautiful island.

    Another interesting thing for me was on Tuesday this week, because I had the opportunity to go to one of Meliá´s 5 star hotels, that´s situated right next to the sea with magnificent panoramic views. I went with my boss as she has organized everything for this huge event that was for all the important bosses and employees from all the different regions. My boss said to me that it would be really interesting to attend the event to see how things work and to learn new things about the business and the subject of Digital Marketing. For lunch there was a buffet with hot and cold food, desserts and drinks, and everything was free. It was really interesting and beneficial for me to listen to all the presentations in Spanish and to take part in the workshops.
