南山大学の留学プログラムの評価について書きたいと思います。南山に来て九ヶ月が経ち、南山のいいポイントや悪いポイントをわかるようになりました。

CJSという南山大学留学プログラムでは、半年間と一年間のコースを選択できる。半年間のコースを選んだら、秋学期の方がいいかもしれません。なぜなら、日本人の大学生がいるからです。日本の大学では、春休みが二月から四月までで、その間にCJS留学生がずっと授業があります。そのため、日本語を使う機会がかなり少ないと思います。
次に日本語授業について話します。CJSでは、日本語の能力に応じて六つレベルに分けられています。レベル３と４はカルテットという教科書が使われています。実は、私の最初のレベルは３でした。４レベルに進んでも、同じような練習も行っています。正直に言うとめんどくさいと思ってしまいました。日本語の授業は水曜日以外、二限まであるので、毎日200分です。それは長いからこそ、チャレンジをしないとつまらなくなる可能性があります。レベル５と６は新聞や自然な日本語記事を使っているのでそちの方が上達すると思います。そのため、留学する前、しっかりカルテットを勉強して、プレイスメントテストをうまく受けて、最初から５レベルを始めることがお勧めします。
他の重要なことは、どこで住むということです。個人的な意見ですけれども、ヤンセン国際寮に住んだ方が良い。その理由が、いくつあります。私は、ホストファミリーと住んでいる友達がいます。しかし、ホストファミリーに応じて楽しいことが異なる。ホストファミリーと住む理由は主に日本の文化を触れたいとか、日本語を話すようになりたいとか。しかしヤンセンでも日本人と交流できる。時々、ホストファミリーよりも場合もあります。後、ヤンセン国際寮は大学の隣にあるので、本当に楽だ。ホストファミリーは主に、片道１時間から２時間かけて通学しなければなりません。ただし、もっと近い場合もあります。ヤンセンに住むと比較的に自由に過ごすことができるので、自分の生活スタイルや希望をよく考えたうえで決めてください。

最後に、南山はたくさんサークルや部活などがあります。もし入ったら、もっと友達を作れそうと思います。入りにくい場合があるけれども、入りやすいもあります。自由に参加してみてください。
私の留学がもうそろそろ終わりますが、もっと上手になりたい気持ちが強くなってきた。やはり、日本語能力が上手ほど、楽しくなるから諦めません。

My thoughts of Nanzan University’s Study Abroad Program.

I’d like to write about my evaluation of Nanzan University’s study abroad program. After spending nine months here, I’ve come to understand both the strengths and weaknesses of Nanzan.
The CJS program at Nanzan University offers two options: a one-semester (half-year) course or a one-year course. If you choose the one-semester option, the Autum semester might be better. This is because Nanzan university students are around during that time. In Japan, spring break typically lasts from February to April, during which CJS students still have regular classes. As a result, there are very few opportunities to interact in Japanese during that period.
Next, I’d like to talk about the Japanese language classes. CJS divides students into six levels based on their proficiency. Levels 3 and 4 use a textbook called Quartet. I started at Level 3. Even after advancing to Level 4, we continued doing similar exercises. To be honest, it started to feel repetitive and a bit tedious. Classes are held every weekday except Wednesdays, with two periods per day — that’s 200 minutes of Japanese daily. Because it’s such a long class, without real challenges, it can become boring. Levels 5 and 6 use newspapers and more natural Japanese articles, so I think students in those levels improve more. That’s why I recommend studying Quartet thoroughly before coming, doing well on the placement test, and aiming to start at Level 5 from the beginning.

Another important aspect is where you live. Personally, I think living in the Jansen International Dormitory is the better option. I have friends who stayed with host families, and while that can be a good experience, how enjoyable it is really depends on the family. Many students choose host families to experience Japanese culture or improve their Japanese

speaking skills. But you can also interact with Japanese students at Jansen — sometimes even more than with host families. Also, Jansen is located right next to the university, which makes daily life much easier. Host families often live 1 to 2 hours away by train, though there are some exceptions. Living at Jansen gives you more freedom, so I encourage you to carefully consider your lifestyle and goals before deciding where to live.
Lastly, Nanzan offers many clubs and societies. If you join one, it’s a great way to make more Japanese friends. While some clubs are harder to get into, others are very welcoming. Try joining — it’s worth a shot.
My study abroad experience is coming to an end, but my motivation to improve my Japanese has only grown stronger. After all, the better your Japanese becomes, the more enjoyable everything becomes — so I won’t give up.

日本では四月になるということは、やはり桜を咲くということだ。
南山の留学生別科は春休み中も授業があったが、学部生は二ヶ月ぐらい休みだった。しかし、大学が始まり、学部生が戻ってきたことで、大学の雰囲気が一気に明るくなった。本当に良かった！二月と三月は静かで、少し寂しい気持ちになっていた。

私の寮にも新1年学生が引っ越してきた。新しい学生たちとよく遊ぶようになり、日本語の練習もたくさんできるようになった。大学が始まったため、たくさんの新歓が行われていた。引っ越してきた日本人の友達と一緒に新歓に参加したり、新しい友達を作ったりしていたので、私も新1年に見えたかもしれない。行儀ダンスやラクロスなどの新歓に行って、私だけが外国人だった。面白かった経験だった。イギリスではこういったイベントが有料なことが多いので、新歓が無料でご飯をもらえるのはちょぅと驚いた。
今年の桜は少し遅くて咲いたので、四月の中旬までも花見を楽しむ機会がたくさんあった。そのため、何回も花見に行った。名古屋では鶴舞湖園が桜の所として有名なので、そこ行って、まるで祭りみたいなストリートフードがいっぱいあって人もすごく多かった。イギリスでは花見のようなイベントが行なっていないので、本当の日本ならではの経験だと感じた。
朝から夜まで、友達や家族と一緒にご飯を食べたり、お酒を飲んだりして、落ち着いた雰囲気を楽しめた。名古屋で急に寒くなってきて、期末試験もそろそろ始まるのでまだ頑張るしかできない。今日の授業で習ったことわざで「楽あれば苦あり」今、その気持ちを分かっている。もう少し頑張りたい。それではまた月へ。

It becoming April in Japan, means the Sakura blooming. The CJS students at Nanzan had class all though spring break but the normal students had 2 months off. However, now that university has started again, the students have returned which is great! For February and March campus was quiet, so it was a rather lonely feeling.

New first year students have also moved into my dorm, and I started to hang out with them a lot. Because it’s the start of the new year, many clubs’ welcome events are being held. So, I went by the new students to the welcome events and made more new friends, though I must have also looked like a first-year student maybe. I went to the ballroom and lacrosse welcome events and was the only foreigner there which was a unique experience. In the UK these types of events are normally have participation fees, but I was surprised by many free meals were given out.

This year the Sakura was late to bloom so there were chances to enjoy the flower viewing until mid-April. Because of that I went multiple times to go see the Sakura. In Nagoya there is a place well known for its Sakura, called Tsurumai park. I went there and there was lots of festival like street food and loads of people. In the UK there isn’t really an event like Hanami (flower viewing) so it really is a Japanese experience. From early in the morning till late at night, with friends and family, people eat and drink and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.

Nagoya has become cold again and final exams are on the horizon I can still only keep trying hard.

This reminds me of a proverb we learned in class today “raku areba, kuari” which means ‘if there’s calm there will also be pain’ but the opposite is also true so I understand this feeling and keep working a little harder. Until next month!

春休みになりました！また、あまり真面目に勉強しなくてもいい期間がなり、リラクスすることができます。1月で新しいスポーツを試しました。それはフィギュアスケートです。急に友達がスケートをしたがっていたので、その友達はスケートに誘ってくれました。スケートする経験がなかったので、本当に緊張していました。しかし、なんとなく滑るようになりました。三年前、自転車のプロ選手になりたかったです、その時たくさんの練習していました。しかし、事故のため、その夢を諦めました。本当に初級ばかりですが、前の経験を考えながら本気で練習するつもりです！南山大学もフィギュアスケート部活があります。二週間前、その部活を入りました。せっかく日本に来たので部活を入った方がいいと思っていたけれども、機会が少しありませんでした。だから、今部活を入っているのはいい経験と思います。たくさんの恥ずかしいことや難しいことがありますが、頑張りたいと思っています。
2月の四日から七日まで、友達と長野に旅行しました。その旅行について話したいと思います。日本の二月といえば、やはり、雪だ！長野ならでは、雪猿が特に有名ですので、そのところにみんなが行ってみたかったです。行った時には大雪の予報でした。そのため、着いたらすぐ軽井沢でスケートや星を見ることを見に行きました。軽井沢に行っているうちに、大雪のため、そのような活動をできるかどうか確認しました。星を見る活動は大雪のため、もう中止になってしまいました。友達の中で私は日本番号しかなかったので、アイスリンクの開業を確認しました。店員さんは開いていると言いましたが、実現に着いたら、雪のため、中止になりました。私たちは状況に笑うしかありませんでした。幸い、タクシーで１５分に行ったら有名な温泉がありました。そこで一日のストレスを和らげました。本当にもし温泉がなかったら、その日は最悪の日になるかもしれません。長野の旅行にはたくさんの雪活動をしたり、温泉に入ったり、最高旅行でした！　春休みは二週間しかないので、来週授業が始まります。もっと旅行したくてしょうがないけれども、私の留学する目標は日本語だから、勉強頑張れます！

It’s become the spring vacation! Again, it’s become a time where I don’t that to study that hard so I can relax. In January, I tried a new sport which was figure skating. One day a friend wanted to go skating, so he invited us to go. I had no experience of skating, so I was actually nervous. However, I eventually became able to skate. 3 years ago, I wanted to be a professional cyclist, so I was training a lot during that time. But due to an accident I gave up that dream. I’m really a beginner but while thinking about my previous training experience, I intend to seriously do figure skating. Nanzan do have a figure skating society so two weeks ago I joined it. Now I was in Japan I thought it would be good to join a Japanese club but opportunities to do so had been few. So, joining a club now would be a good experience, I think. There will be lots of embarrassing and hard moments, but I will try my best!

From the 4th of February till the 7th I went to Nagano with my friends. If you think about February in Japan, then snow definitely comes to mind. In Nagano, snow monkeys are very famous, that place we all wanted to visit. When we went it was a heavy snow fall forecast. Because of that we wanted to go to Karuizawa quickly to do skating and star gazing. While we were going to Karuizawa, we wanted to check if the activities we wanted to do were still open because of the heavy snow. However, due to the snow, the star gazing had already been cancelled. Because I was the only one in our group who had a Japanese phone number, I called the ice rink to see if they were still open. On the phone the staff saif it was open but when we actually arrived it had been suspended due to the heavy snow. We could only laugh at the situation. Luckily there was a famous onsen 15 minutes’ drive away from us. There we were able to release the stress from the day. If that onsen hadn’t been there, it would probably have been a very bad day. On our Nagano trip was full of snow activities, going to onsens, it was a great trip. Our spring vacation is only 2 weeks, next week classes will start again. I can’t help but want to travel more. But my goal in study abroad is Japanese so I will try my best. Until next month!

12月の下旬で期末試験が終わり、やっと冬休みが始まりました。私の大学、リーズ大学で会った友達が大阪に戻ったので、私は会いに行きました。私は大阪に行ったことがありますが、その時乗り換えだけでした。その友達が6月くらい会わなかったから本当に日本で会って良かったです。私の友達の親は大阪出身なので友達が案内してくれました。道頓堀という有名な所に行きました。そこで色々な眩しい看板があり、どこを見たらいいのかわからなくなるような場所です。道頓堀と言えば、やはりグリコの看板ですね。そこも実際に見に行きましたが、思ったより普通に感じました。たくさん写真を見たことがあるからもう実物に見ても驚きませんでした！大阪で本当に少ない時間を過ごさなかってしまい、また他の名所に観に行くために戻ろうと思っています。
日本で新年はクリスマスより大切な行事です。新年になったらみんなが初詣するために神社やお寺に行きます。初詣は一年の健康や幸運を祈ることで一般的には1月1日から1月3日の間に行われます。名古屋で有名な神社という熱田神宮があります。そこで友達と初詣しに行きました。祈った後で、おみくじを買いました。おみくじは日本の神社で買うことができる、運を占うための紙です。将来の運や生活をすることアドバイスが書いてあります。熱田神宮ではおみくじが２００円で、取ったおみくじは中吉でした。
春学期は14日から始まるので新しい留学生がヤンセンに引越しました。主にアメリカから人が多そうですが、早いけれども、もう仲良く新しい友達が作りました。そのおかけで安心しました。今年も新しい経験をしたり、色々な場所に行ったりするのがいいと思っています。それでは明けましておめでとうございます。最後に四日前、横浜に行きました。その時いい富士山の写真を撮りました。やぱり富士山はとても綺麗ですね。

Final exams ended at the end of December, finally the winter holiday has begun. A friend who I met at Leeds University returned to Osaka, so I decided to meet up with them. I have been to Osaka before but only transferring stations. I hadn’t seen my friend for over 6 months, so I was really glad that I could meet them in Japan. My friend’s parents are from Osaka, so my friend showed me round the city. We went to Doutonbori a famous district of Osaka. There are many colourful signs. It’s a place where you don’t know where you should look because of it. If you think of Dotonbori, then the Guriko sign pops to mind first. We went to see it in person as well but because I had seen lots of photos of it,

seeing it in person wasn’t that surprising. I really didn’t spend a lot of time in Osaka so I’m thinking of returing as seeing other famous places next time. In Japan, New year is felt to be more important event than Christmas. On New Year’s Day, everyone goes to the shrine for ‘Hatsumoude’. Hatsumoude is praying for good health and luck on around new year. Generally, it is done from the 1st of January until the 3rd of January. Atsuta Jinju is a famous shrine in Nagoya, There I went to the shrine with my friend for Hatsumoude. After praying we bought fortunes called ‘omikuji’, these are pecices of paper which tell you your luck and advice to follow in daily life. At Atsuta Jingu the ‘omikuji’ were 200 yen and the one I got was middle luck!
The spring semester starts from the 14 of January so new students came into the dorm I’m living in. They are mainly from America. I have quickly become good friends with the new students. Because of that I’m feeling relieved. This year as well, I am thinking that I want to have new experiences and go to lots of different places. With that Happy new year! To sign off, I went to Yokohama a couple days ago and was able to take a good photo of Mt Fuji. Mt Fuji really is a beautiful mountain!!
