Many people, including myself, thought that Amman would not have the western amenities we take for granted in the west. But perhaps due to the number of expats working in the NGO sector in Jordan, there are places not unlike London where both Jordanian and foreigner go to enjoy themselves. One such place in the Shmeisani area was “Radiance” night club – now of course I am studying very hard in Jordan, so I don’t go out often, but I mention this is in the greater context of the weekend.
I had a great night with my friends, Jordanian and British, but due to a schedule confusion, I had a bus booked with another group of friends to Petra the next morning. Not to miss out on the biggest cultural excursion in Jordan, I continued through the night into morning. And it is good that it happened like this, as the next week floods hit the Petra site. Instead, we enjoyed Petra in the calm, warm autumn climate.
Visiting Petra can only be considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the elaborate architecture of the Nabatean Kingdom still standing with the best examples found at ‘The Treasury’, which is actually a grand tomb to Nabatean King Aretas IV, the current name comes from local Bedouins believing it contained amazing treasure inside. The next best example we did not see unfortunately, The Monastery is located on a big hill, the locals insisting that it is only realistic to reach it by riding a donkey – but for reasons of animal cruelty, we as a group refused this offer.
Petra is amazing and deserves its place as a modern wonder of the world, however it could benefit from an improvement in the standards of management. While sympathetic to the Bedouin lifestyle and their need to earn a living, but there are problems with harassment from local traders with things to sell. Further, issues with child labour and animal abuse persist, despite the commitment from the government to combat this wherever it is found.
My experiences have shown that Jordan is a country of many faces, from the clubs of Shmeisani to the caves of Petra – there is not one way to experience Jordan and whether I feel comfortable or not, it is definitely an experience.
كتير أشخاص، بما في ذلك نفسي، فكّروا أن عمان ما عندها وسائل الراحة من مسلمات في الغرب. عشان عدد الأشخاص عُمّال بقطاعة منظمة غير حكومية في أردن، في أمكنة زي لندن وين اردنيين وأجانب رايحين عشان بنبسطوا عأوقات فرقهم. مكان واحد زي هيك في منطقة شميساني هي نادي ليلي “رايديانس” – أكيد بدرس كويس كتير في أردن، فبسهر نادرا، بس بذكر هيك في سياق أوسع الويكند.
الليل كان كويس مع أصحابي، أردني وبريطاني، بس عشان تشوش في برنامجي، حجزت باص مع شلة تانية عالبتراء في الصبح الجاي. كان ما بدي يروح علي المشوار الأكبر في أردن، فكمّلت طول الليل عالصبح. وكويس أنه صار بهاي الطريقة، لان بالأسبوع الجاي كان في فيضانات ضربت عموقع البتراء. بالأحرى، انبسطنا عالبتراء في الجو الدافي الهادي الخريفي.
زيارة عالبتراء تتفكّر كرحلة من العمر، نمط معماري متقن المملكة النبطية يلي لسا ببقي، الأمثلة الأكبر موجود في “الخزنة”، يلي قبر كبير للملك النبطي “حارثة الرابع”، الاسم حديث يأتي من البدويين المحليين يلي يعتقدوا أن المبنى حويت فيها كنز رائع. للأسف الأمثلة الأفضل اخر، الدير كان موجود عتله كبير. المحليين أصرّو ان الطريق بس عشان يصل عالقمة بحمار. لكن لأسباب القسوة على الحيوان، رفضنا العرض.
البتراء رائعة وبتستاهل مكانها كعجائب العالم الحديث، لكن ممكن استفادة من تحسينات في إدارة. أنا متعاطف مع نمط الحياة البدوية، وحاجتهم لدخل أزراقهم، بس في مشاكل بتحرش من بيّاعين محليين مين عندهم أغراض للبيع. وكمان لسا في مشاكل بعمل الأطفال وتعذيب الحيوانات، رغم التزام من الحكومة لمقاتلة ضد هيك.
تجاربي اتفرجت أن أردن بلد تبع كتير وجوه، من النوادي الليلية عكهوف البتراء – فيش طريقة واحدة لتجربة أردن، وما إزا حسيت مريح او لا، هي تجربة بلا شك.
