    Castillos y Amigas

    Este mes Pasado ha sido un mes de ajuste para mí. Después de haber trabajado aquí por más de un mes, finalmente me siento instalado en mi nuevo trabajo y en la vida en Palma de Mallorca. Mi hermana y su amigo me visitaron para una semana este mes que me dio la oportunidad de ir a ver algunos de los lugares de interés que no había visitado todovía en Palma.

    Uno de estos lugares que no había visitado fue el Castillo de Bellver, situado fueras del centro de Palma en una colina con vistas a la ciudad y la campiña adyacente. Decidimos andar al castillo desde el centro de Palma, que en los 30 grados de calor es un logro. Llegamos al hermoso parque donde el castillo se encuentra y nos enfrentamos a cientos de escaleras que llevaban al castillo. En la subida pasamos una antigua iglesia con vistas al centro de la ciudad y el mar. Cuando finalmente llegamos a la parte superior de las escaleras vimos el precioso castillo de cuento que hizo que el paseo vale la pena. El castillo precioso de forma redonda, con sus cuatro torres y su foso se quedó con vistas a Palma.

    El castillo tiene 3 plantas que el público puede visitar; la planta baja, donde hay una plataforma que incluye actuaciones a menudo, la primera planta y el techo con vistas espectaculares de la ciudad, el mar, las montañas y el campo. También hay un museo con la historia del castillo.

    Aparte de la belleza del castillo, hay una historia de interés histórico. Originalmente, el castillo fue utilizado por los Reyes de Mallorca cuando estaban en la isla, sin embargo, también era una prisión, una prisión que tenía varias prisioneros políticos importantes, incluyendo Gasper Melchor de Jovellanos. El museo en el castillo habla de estos puntos históricos.

    Hoy en día el castillo es propiedad de la ciudad de Palma y muchas personas vienen y visitan. También se utiliza para eventos públicos y ceremonias que tienen lugar en el patio.

    ENGLISH VERSION

    This past month has been a month of adjustment for me. Having worked here for over a month now I finally feel settled into my new job and into life in Palma de Mallorca. My sister and her friend visited me for a week this month which gave me the chance to go a see some of the places that I hadn’t visited yet in Palma.

    One of these sights that I hadn’t visited was Bellver Castle, situated outside the centre of Palma on a hill overlooking the city and the surrounding countryside. We decided to walk to the castle from the centre of Palma, which in the 30 degree heat here is an achievement. We reached the beautiful park where the castle is situated and were confronted by hundreds of steps leading up to the castle. On the climb we passed an old church with views over the trees of the city centre and the sea. When we finally reached the top of stairs we saw the beautiful fairytale castle which made the walk up there definitely worth it. The gorgeous round shaped castle with its four turrets and a moat stood there overlooking Palma.

    The castle has 3 floors which the public can visit; the ground floor where there is a stage where people perform regularly, the first floor and the roof with spectacular views of the city, the sea, the mountains and the countryside. There is also a museum featuring the history of the castle.

    Aside from the beauty of the castle, there is an interesting historical story. Originally the castle was used by the Kings of Mallorca when they were on the island, however it was also a prison which held several important political figures including Gasper Melchor de Jovellanos. The museum in castle covers these historical points.

    Nowadays the castle is owned by the city of Palma and many people come and visit it. It is also used for public events and ceremonies which take place in the courtyard.

    Que rápido ha pasado este mes en Palma, hace tres meses llegado aquí y me lo siento como dos minutos! Actualmente estoy muy contenta con todo, mi trabajo esta va muy bien, he conocido mucha nueva gente y creo que mi nivel de español ha mejorado mucho. También, el tiempo está muy bien y se va continuar a mejorar cada semana así que estamos acercando el verano!

    Mi trabajo está muy variada que me agrada mucho porque cada semana hay cosas diferente para hacer, hay siempre nueva gente para conocer y mis tareas diarias no están tan aburridos. Me lleva muy bien con mi jefe, ella está muy flexible y amable, además, en general todos los otros empleadores están amistoso y he hecho un montón de nuevos amigos españoles, franceses y alemanes también. La oficina está muy grande, creo que hay un total de 500 empleadores, así que hay una variedad de personas de diferentes origines , eso me gusta mucho.

    La semana pasada viene mi novio por el fin de semana porque en Inglaterra era día festivo entonces estuve el ocasión perfecto para aprovechar un fin de semana un pocito más largo. Decidimos de alquilar un coche para explorar la isla un poco, nos visitamos muchas lugares diferentes a través de su estancia, por ejemplo, fuimos al este de la isla el sábado y nos visitamos 3 calas diferentes todos cuales eran tan bonitas, una se llama Caló des Moro que tiene una pequeñita playa con muchas rocas pero lo bueno es el mar es tan claro y tiene un hermoso entorno.

    El domingo conducimos al norte de la isla para ver el Cabo de Formentor que ofrece vistas panorámicas increíbles de la isla. Hacia sol y mucho calor que era perfecto para tomando fotos. Nos visitamos el puerto de Sóller antes de volvimos, aquí caminamos mucho y comimos un helado en frente de todos los barcos en el puerto. Teníamos una fin de semana increíble y era tan bueno para ver nuevos lugares en la isla.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    This month has gone so fast in Palma, I arrived here 3 months ago and it seems like 2 minutes! At the moment I’m really happy with everything, my job is going really well and I’ve met lots a new people and I feel that my Spanish has improved lots. Also, the weather is so nice now and it’s going to continue to get better as were approaching summer!

    My job is really varied which is really great because each week there are different things to do, there’s always new people to meet and my daily tasks are not too boring. I get on really well with my boss, she´s really flexible and friendly, furthermore, in general the rest of the employees are nice and I have made lots of new Spanish, French and German friends. The office is really big, I think there’s about 500 people, so there’s a variety of people from different backgrounds, this is I like a lot.

    Last week my boyfriend came for the weekend because in England it was bank holiday so it was the perfect occasion to make the most of a bit of a longer weekend. We decided to rent a car to explore the island a little bit, we visited lots of different places through his stay, for example, we went to the east of the island and visited 3 different coves  all of which were so pretty, one is called Caló des Moro which has a small beach with lots of rocks but the good thing is the sea is so clear and it has beautiful surroundings.

    On Sunday we drove to the north of the island to see the Cabo de Formentor which offers incredible panoramic views of the island. It was sunny and really hot which was perfect for taking photos. We visited the Puerto de Sóller before we went back, here we walked for a while and ate an ice cream in front of all the boats in the port. We had such an amazing weekend and it was so good to see new places on the island.

    Estoy disfrutando mucho mi tiempo aquí; Palma es un lugar tan bonito, hay muchísimas cosas para hacer y ver y finalmente el tiempo esta increíble. Para Semana Santa mi novio vino aquí por 4 días, el vuelo fue un poco caro porque Semana Santa es una feria en Palma y hay muchas fiestas que duran casi dos semanas que significa que los precios siempre están altos. De todos modos, valió la pena porque no nos vimos para mucho tiempo y estaba muy bien para pasar algunos días juntos.  Cuando llegó el viernes fuimos a una restaurante que está situada en el puerto, se llama Mar de Nudos, al principio decidíamos solo tomar algo para beber pero cuando nos vimos la comida de los otros clientes nos cambiamos de idea! La comida estaba buenísima, una de las comidas mejores que hemos comido, además el tiempo estaba tan agregable y pasábamos un día estupendo.

    El sábado fuimos a una playa que se llama Ses Illetes, que está ubicada 30 minutes en bus del centro de Palma, está muy bonita, el mar es tan claro y las vistas son impresionantes. Cuando llegamos, tomamos algo en el bar y allí nos vimos el jugador de futbol famoso y estrella tv de ´A league of their own´, Jamie Redknapp en la playa con su familia, no podíamos creerlo, pero después nos descubrimos que él tiene una villa aquí.

    También, el sábado pasado mis amigos y yo alquilamos un minivan por todo el día, no estuve muy cara porque haya 9 personas para compartir el precio, que estuve bien. Nos visitamos dos playa tan bonitas, una de las dos es una playa totalmente natural, no hay bares, facilidades o algo así, ¡simplemente el mar, la arena y el sol! Mallorca verdaderamente es una isla bonita.

    Otra cosa interesante para mí fue el martes de esta semana, porque tenía la oportunidad de ir a un de los mejores hoteles de Melia que es 5 estrellas, que está situado al lado del mar con vistas panorámicas magnificentes. Fui con mi jefe porque ella ha organizado todo para este grande evento que fue para todos los jefes importantes y empleadores de Melia de todos los diferentes regiones. Mi jefe mi dije que sería muy interesante para asistir el evento para ver cómo se funcionan las cosas  y para aprender nuevas cosas de la empresa y del tema de Marketing Digital. Para el almuerzo haya un buffet de comida caliente y frio, postres y bebidas y todo estuve gratis. Fue muy interesante y beneficial para mí para escuchar a todas las presentaciones en español y también para participar en los workshops.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    I’m enjoying my time here; Palma is a beautiful place, there´s lots of things to do and see and finally, the weather is amazing! For Easter my boyfriend came here for 4 days, the flight was a little bit expensive because here in Palma Easter is a Bank Holiday and there´s lots of celebrations that last about 2 weeks which means that the prices are always quite high. Anyway, it was worth it as we hadn´t seen each other for a while and it was really nice to spend time together. When he arrived on Friday we went to a restaurant on the port, called Mar de Nudos, in the beginning we were just going to have a drink but when we saw the other customers food we changed our minds! The food was so nice, one of the best meals we have had, plus, the weather was great and we had a really nice day.

    Saturday we went to a beach called Ses Illetes, which is situated about 30 minutes from the centre of Palma, it´s so pretty, the sea is so clear and the views are amazing. When we arrived we had a drink in the bar and there we saw the famous football player and TV star of A league of their own´ Jamie Redknapp on the beach with his family, we couldn´t believe it, but later we found out that he has his own villa here in Palma.

    Also, last Saturday me and my friends hired a minivan for the day, it wasn´t very expensive because there were 9 people to share the price which was good. We visited 2 beautiful beaches, one of the two was completely natural, there weren´t any bars, facilities or anything like that, just the sea, the sand and the sun! Mallorca truly is a beautiful island.

    Another interesting thing for me was on Tuesday this week, because I had the opportunity to go to one of Meliá´s 5 star hotels, that´s situated right next to the sea with magnificent panoramic views. I went with my boss as she has organized everything for this huge event that was for all the important bosses and employees from all the different regions. My boss said to me that it would be really interesting to attend the event to see how things work and to learn new things about the business and the subject of Digital Marketing. For lunch there was a buffet with hot and cold food, desserts and drinks, and everything was free. It was really interesting and beneficial for me to listen to all the presentations in Spanish and to take part in the workshops.

     

  • Amy Clark – Palma de Mallorca – España – March 2015

    Palma de Mallorca – España.

    Han terminado mis 6 meses en Francia y hace 2 semanas me mudé a Palma de Mallorca para comenzar mis finales 6 meses en el extranjero. Se puede decir sin temor a equivocarse que aunque este es mi tereco vez en un país extranjero, las cosas siguen siendo difíciles cuando se llega por primera vez. Las semanas pasadas han sido muy agitadas y muy estresante para mi, no pienso que fue un buen idea para comenzar mi nuevo trabajo la próxima día después de llegando aquí; estaba muy cansada y sentía un poco ansiosa.

    Mañana seré la mitad de mi tercera semana trabajando por Melia Hotels International, no lo creo como rápido el tiempo ha pasado. Hasta hoy, estoy disfrutando mucho mi trabajo porque es muy interesante, las tareas que tengo que hacer están muy variadas y también todos mis compañeros están muy simpáticos y amables. Me llevo muy bien con una chica en particular porque ella me ha ayudado mucho con todo, si se trata de trabajo o algo mas no lo importa.

    Me alegra mucho que he obtenido este puesto en Palma, primero porque me ha dado el oportunidad de vivir en un lugar muy bonita, donde hace sol todo al ano y por no hablar del hecho que hay muchos otros estudiantes de Sheffield Hallam que ya viven aquí que esta bien porque cuando vivía en Montpellier no me conocí nadie y me parecía muy difícil estar solo la mayoría del tiempo.

    Lo bueno es que cuando llegué aquí la compañía me permitió de alojarse en un de sus hoteles por dos semanas, que estaba muy útil porque es tan difícil para buscar un apartamento cuando no sabes nada de el área. Al final, la última fin de semana que me queda en el hotel busqué un estudio en una población se llama Santa Catalina a través de una inmobiliaria. A mi parece que es muy bonita y me gusta mucha la ubicación; esta cerca del centro pero también no esta muy lejos del mar y el puerto, hay paradas de bus,  muchas tiendas, restaurantes y barres todo en poco distancia.

    Tengo ganas de vivir aquí y creo que estas próximas 6 meses van estar muy bien no solo para mejorar mi nivel de español sino también para ganar experiencia laboral en una empresa muy bien conocida y por supuesto disfrutarse.

     

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION: 

    My 6 months in France have come to an end and 2 weeks ago I moved to Palma, Majorca to start my final 6 months abroad. It´s safe to say that although this is my third time in a foreign country things still seem to be difficult when you first arrive. The last few weeks have been very hectic and stressful for me, I don’t think it was a good idea to start my new job the next day after arriving here; I was very tired and felt a little anxious.

    Tomorrow will be half way through my third week working for Meliá Hotels International, I can´t believe how quick it´s gone. So far I’m really enjoying my job because it’s interesting, the tasks that I have to do all very varied and all my colleagues are really kind and friendly. I get on particular well with one girl who has helped me a lot with everything, whether it´s been about work or something else.

    I´m really glad that I got this job in Palma, firstly because it has given me the opportunity to work in a beautiful place, where its sunny all year round and not to mention the fact that there are lots of other students from Sheffield Hallam that already live here, which is good because when I lived in Montpellier I didn´t know anybody and I found it hard being alone all the time.

    The good thing is that when I arrived here the company allowed me to stay in one of their hotels for 2 weeks, which was really useful because it´s so difficult to find an apartment when you don’t know anything about the area. In the end, the last weekend that I had left in the hotel I found a studio situated in an area called Santa Catalina, through an estate agent. I think it´s really nice and I really like the location; it´s near the centre but it´s also not very far from the sea and the port, there’s bus stops, lots of shops, bars and restaurants all close by.

    I´m really looking forward to living here and I think that these next 6 months are going to be great, not only for improving my level of Spanish but also to gain work experience in a well-known company and of course enjoying myself!
