During my year abroad, I spent the first semester studying in Alicante and the second semester doing an internship in Salamanca. Both of these experiences were incredible and allowed me to immerse myself in the Spanish lifestyle and meet a lot of different people while improving my knowledge of the language. It was also a very new experience for me, that was out of my comfort zone, but I got used to it and it was a great time.
One thing I particularly enjoyed about my year abroad was the opportunities I had to explore different cities within Spain. As I spent my time in two different cities that were quite far from each other, this also allowed me to visit a wider variety of places and regions.
Having this scholarship from John Speak helped me a lot throughout these months as it allowed me to make the most of every opportunity available to me and meant that I had less to worry about and more time to enjoy every aspect of life in Spain.
I visited places such as Avila, Sevilla, Murcia, Segovia, Toledo, Barcelona and more. It was a great experience and I hope to return in the future in order to continue immersing myself in the culture and language and meet more people.
My time abroad was important in encouraging me to grow personally as well as academically. This was the first time I had left the country alone, especially for such a long period of time and while it took some getting used to, it was definitely worth it. I found that the mix of studying and doing an internship was incredibly helpful as I had the chance to study along with other exchange students as well as Spanish students while I attended the University of Alicante, and I also had the chance to meet a lot of different students while I interned at a company that helped to facilitate the year abroad for many students. In the internship, I was able to speak to a lot more people daily and this helped immensely to improve my level of Spanish which was great. I found this time in Spain to be an enlightening experience and I would recommend a year abroad to anyone thinking about it as it had a very positive impact on me in many ways. It was especially important for me in enabling me to be more aware of the endless opportunities available to me, especially those abroad and it was fulfilling in many different ways. I cannot wait to return to Spain soon and continue to participate in the lifestyle and learn more about the culture.
Mi tiempo en España ha finalizado y ha sido una experiencia genial. Antes de irme, tuve la oportunidad de visitar unas ciudades mas, en particular, Barcelona y Toledo. Estos meses en España me han enseñado mucho y la experiencia de vivir en otro país y experimentar la cultura y los aspectos diferentes de la vida me ha permitido a tener una vista mas abierta en general y he conocido a muchas personas de muchos países diferentes. Quiero volver al país bastante pronto y tengo ganas de explorar mas ciudades de España y ademas, quiero visitar Sudamérica y practicar mi español allí, con distintas personas y distintas acentos. Este tiempo en el extranjero también me ha convencido que puedo hacer mucho, hay muchos lugares y muchas culturas de explorar en el mundo y me gustaría conocer tanto como posible. En el futuro, es posible que vaya a explorar opciones de vivir o trabajar afuera del Reino Unido y he pensado de encontrar una compañía en Londres que trabaja en otros países y haciendo una practica o algo así con sus divisiones en otros países por ejemplo y ahora, pienso que tengo mas ganas de hacer esto porque tengo esta experiencia de ser en el extranjero solo y era fantástico.
Uno de las cosas mas interesantes de la experiencia era los varios aspectos de la cultura que he visto mientras que estaba en el país en los dos ciudades diferentes. Esto incluye los monumentos que vi también. En particular, me ha gustado la oportunidad de visitar los alcázares como la de Sevilla, la de Segovia, y la de Toledo. Ha sido interesante para aprender mas de estos edificios y me gustaria volver a espana para visitar los alcazares en otras ciudades.
Algo que me gusta mucho de espana tambien es las vistas de los paisajes y la naturaleza en todas partes. Tuve suerte para tomar muchas fotos de estos y para ver tantas vistas increibles durante mi tiempo alli.

My time in Spain has come to an end and it has been a great experience. Before leaving, I had the opportunity to visit some more cities, in particular, Barcelona and Toledo. These months in Spain have taught me a lot and the experience of living in another country and experiencing the culture and the different aspects of life has allowed me to have a more open view in general and I have met many people from a lot of different countries. I would like to return to Spain soon and I am looking forward to exploring more cities in Spain and also, I would like to visit South America and practice my Spanish there also, with different people and different accents.
This time abroad has convinced me that I can do a lot and there are many places and cultures to explore in the world and I would like to get to know as many cities as possible. In the future, it is possible that I will be exploring the option of living or working outside the UK and I have thought of finding a London based company with branches abroad and doing an internship or something similar with their subsidiaries in different countries. I think that I am willing to do this even more so now because of this experience abroad on my own.
One of the most interesting things about this experience, was the different aspects of culture that I was able to see while living in Spain. This included the monuments I saw while travelling around Spain. One thing I enjoyed about this in particular was that I had a chance to visit some of the royal alcazars in different cities in Spain. I visited 3, in Sevilla, Toledo, and Segovia. There are 6 in total, and I would like to return to Spain to visit the remaining Alcazars in different cities.
Something else that I really like in Spain is the views of the landscapes and the nature everywhere. I was lucky to take a lot of pictures of these and to be able to see so many incredible views during my stay there.
Durante este mes, he seguido experimentando la cultura aquí en España y la experiencia ha sido genial. En primero, he visitado algunos sitios en Salamanca antes de salir. Aunque tengo miedo de las alturas, escalé a la cima de las torres en la catedral y vale la pena para las vistas. Se puede escalar a distintas alturas y elegí la más alta para la vista increíble de la ciudad. En esto también, se puede ver las campanas además de la vista de la ciudad en cada dirección.
También, fui al museo art nouveau y art deco en Salamanca. Es un edificio bonito, con las vidrieras. Cuenta con exhibiciones de las muñecas, los caracteres, las pinturas, los muebles, los abanicos y más. También, hay una exhibición actual de Salvador Dalí, lo que tuve la oportunidad de visitar en esta visita. Se llama ‘Dalí y la divina comedia’ y se muestra las xilografías originales de Dalí, sobre la obra de Dante Alighieri. Se compone de tres partes: Paraíso, Purgatoria e infierno. Me interesa esta exhibición porque Dalí es un artista muy conocido y en esta exhibición, se divide en tres partes diferentes era en tres colores: rojo, azul y amarillo y se presenta las distintas atmosferas también. La manera en que se organicen estas obras también era interesante porque se tiene que caminar a lo largo de la exhibición con bastantes curvas para ver todos de las pinturas, con la entrada en el centro y dos lados sin salida.
El arte de Dalí es surrealista asi sus xilografías eran muy abstractas y la manera en que estas ideas vienen de la serie de Dante, un poeta y política, era cautivador para ver la manera en que Dalí lo interpreto. Esta obra se enfoca en la vida de Dante en que era condenado injustamente en un juicio por el que tuvo que exiliarse y dejar su Florencia natal asi esta reflexionando en esto. Esta obra también era escrita en el exilio y se considera algo que revoluciono la literatura. Esta exhibición además de las otras en el museo era una experiencia interesante para mí y tengo ganas de visitar más museos aquí en España.

During this month, I have continued experiencing Spain and the experience has been great. Firstly, I visited some places in Salamanca that I wanted to visit before I leave. Although I am scared of heights, I climbed up to the top of the towers in the cathedral and it was worth it for the view. You can climb up to different levels and I chose to go up to the highest for the incredible view of the city. You can also see the bells from this height as well as the views of the city in every direction.
Also, I went to the art nouveau and art deco museum in Salamanca. It’s a beautiful building, with stained glass windows. It includes exhibitions of dolls, characters, paintings, furniture, fans and more. Also, there is a current exhibition of Salvador Dali, which I had the chance to visit when I went. It is called ‘Dali and the Divine Comedy’ and it shows Dali’s original wood carvings, based on the work of Dante Alighieri. It is composed of 3 parts: Paradise, Purgatory, and Hell. I was interested in this exhibition because Dali is a well-known artist and in this special exhibition, the three sections were broken up into different colours: red, blue and yellow and the different atmospheres could also be clearly seen. The way in which they organised the artwork was interesting because you had to walk throughout the exhibition with many twists and turns to see all the paintings, with the entrance in the middle and a dead end at either side.
Furthermore, Dali’s art is surrealist, so his carvings were very abstract and the way in which these ideas come from the series of Dante, a poet and politician, it was captivating to see how these were interpreted by Dali. This series focuses on the life of Dante, where he was condemned unjustly in a trial to leave his native Florence and go into exile, so he is reflecting in this series. It was also written in exile and is considered something that revolutionised literature. This exhibition as well as others in the museum was interesting to see and I am looking forward to visiting more museums like this here in Spain.
El tiempo está pasando muy rápido durante mi tiempo en España y casi está terminado. Este mes ha sido otro mes divertido y emocionado mientras que he viajado a otras partes de España y también, he hablado con muchas personas españoles. No solo he conocido a algunas personas de España y Sudamérica, sino también, he conocido a otras personas que están estudiando español aquí como personas de Alemania, Taiwán, Italia y muchos países más.
Fui a las montañas cerca de salamanca y la vista era increíble. Se llama La Peña de Francia y me gusté mucho este viaje por las vistas panorámicas y también, fuimos a unas ciudades cerca a Salamanca como Mogorraz y La Albera y eran muy interesantes.
Ahora es semana santa, una vacación religiosa y eso es un tema grande para Salamanca. Salamanca es una ciudad muy religiosa y también, tiene muchos aspectos patrimonios. En el año 1988, fue nombrado patrimonio de la humanidad y en 2002, fue nombrado Capital Europea de la Cultura. Su patrimonio histórico incluye sus catedrales, las escuelas y más. El festival internacional de las artes de castilla y león también se celebra aquí en Salamanca. La semana santa en particular esta destacada aquí porque es de interés turístico internacional. Hay procesiones en las calles y también, hay cosas para ver en la plaza mayor.
Me gusta mucho el patrimonio de los países en general, y por eso, el patrimonio de esta ciudad me ha interesado. He encontrado algunos sitios de la ciudad que quiero ver antes de salir cuando encuentre el tiempo como las catedrales, las que he escuchado que tienen vistas panorámicas maravillosas de la ciudad y también, hay mucho que aprender en estas catedrales también. La ciudad tiene mucha historia y la universidad es un aspecto muy importante de la ciudad, pues, por eso se llama una ciudad universitaria. La universidad es la más antigua de España y una de las más antiguas de Europa y era considerada la más prestigiosa en el pasado.
Otro aspecto importante de la ciudad es la plaza mayor, la que ahora se convierte en el centro de la socializad. Recientemente, han terminado con las renovaciones, reemplazando las luces en la plaza y la arquitectura de la plaza sigue con importancia para la ciudad.

Time is passing very quickly while I have been in Spain and my time here is almost finished. This month has been another exciting month while I have spent time at my internship as well as travelling to other parts of Spain and speaking with a lot of Spanish people. Not only have I met people from Spain and South America, but also other people here learning Spanish such as from Taiwan, Germany, Italy and many other places.
I went on a trip to the mountains near Salamanca and the view was incredible. It is called La Peña de Francia and I liked this trip for the panoramic view from such a high point and we also went to a few cities nearby such as Mogarraz and La Alberca.
Currently, it is Holy Week, a religious vacation that is a big deal for Salamanca. Salamanca is a very religious city and also, it has a lot of cultural aspects. In the year 1988, it was named the World Heritage Site and in 2002, it was named European Capital of Culture. Its historical heritage includes its cathedrals, the schools and more. The international festival of the arts of Castille and Leon is also celebrated here in Salamanca. Holy Week in particular is highlighted here because it is of international tourist interest. There are processions in the street and also, there are things to see in the main plaza.
In general, I like experiencing the different cultures in different countries and because of this, the cultural heritage of this city has interested me a lot. I have researched some places within the city that I want to visit before I leave when I find the time, such as the towers in the cathedrals, which I have heard have incredible views of the city and also, there is a lot to learn in these cathedrals. The city has a lot of history, and the university is a very important aspect of the city, which is why it is referred to as a university city. The university is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe and it was considered the most prestigious in the past.
Another important aspect of the city is the main plaza, which now has become the centre of socialisation. Recently, they have also finished with renovations, replacing the lights in the plaza and the architecture of the plaza still has importance in the city.
Durante este mes he estado disfrutando la ciudad de Salamanca además de otras ciudades como Sevilla, lo que me he gustado mucho. La práctica que estoy haciendo es un trabajo muy interesante, lo que me permite a conocer muchas personas de distintos lugares como Puerto Rico, México, Perú, Ecuador, Chile y más. Esto es genial para mejorar mi nivel de español porque tengo muchas oportunidades de escuchar acentos distintos y me gusta mucho la experiencia. Tengo ganas de disfrutar más experiencias en Salamanca y en España en general.
El informe previo que he escribido mencioné el voto del gobierno de Castilla y León. Los resultados de este voto han sido publicados y de lo que he visto, el público no está contento con el gobierno nuevo. El Partido Popular sigue en poder, pero ahora, hay un acuerdo con el partido VOX y van a gobernar juntos. Esta coalición formada por los dos partidos ha causado mucha polémica, con reacciones de la oposición y el público, lo que se puede ver en las redes sociales, por ejemplo. Vox es un partido de la extrema derecha y por esto, algunas personas han dicho que el gobierno está dando la bienvenida a los xenófobos, misóginos, homófobos y más. La aversión al partido viene de su ideología. Las policías principales están: antinmigración, la unidad de España y la defensa del religión y valores morales. Estos están resumidos como el nacionalismo, tradicionalismo, autoritarismo y más.
El problema que se ve por el público, por ejemplo, en cuanto al nacionalismo, es que VOX promueve la unidad de España, pero esto rechaza directamente a lo que algunas quieren. VOX apoya a la abolición de las comunidades autónomas y, por lo tanto, están en contra de los movimientos separados como el movimiento de la independencia de catalán y el nacionalismo de país vasco. Estos temas están muy delicados, especialmente para las personas que están a favor de la independencia de estas comunidades. El argumento de VOX para justificar esto es que, desde el punto de vista económico, la estructura de las comunidades autónomas esta la causa del gasto excesivo en cuanto al presupuesto. Piensa que un país más centralista permite la reducción del gasto en general.
Las reacciones del publico incluyen las subidas en las redes sociales, destacando los problemas de VOX y las policías que siguen. Se compara a la presidencia e ideología de Donald Trump, un presidente de que VOX apoyó abiertamente durante su campaña hace unos años. Las subidas acusan al partido de racismo, xenofobia, machismo, antifeminismo, antinmigración, islamofobia y más así me parece que el público tiene miedo de lo que va a pasar en el futuro con este partido en poder con el PP.

During this month I have been enjoying the city of Salamanca as well as other cities such as Seville, which I liked a lot. The internship that I am doing is an interesting job, which has allowed me to meet a lot of people from different places such as Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Chile and more. This has been great to improve my level of Spanish because I have the chance to listen to a lot of different accents and I have enjoyed this a lot. I am looking forward to enjoying more experiences in Salamanca and in Spain in general with these people.
In my previous post, I mentioned the vote for the government of Castille and Leon. The result of this has been published and from what I have seen, the public isn’t happy with the new government. The People’s Party continues to govern but they have formed a coalition with the VOX party. This coalition formed by the two parties has caused a lot of controversy, with reactions of the opposition and the public, which has been seen on social media sites for example. Vox is an extreme right party and because of this, some people have said that they have welcomed xenophobes, misogynists, homophobes and more to the government. The dislike for the party comes from their ideology. Their main policies are: anti-immigration, unity of Spain, the defence of religion and moral values. These can be summarised also as nationalism, traditionalism, authoritarianism and more.
The problem that the public sees, for example, regarding nationalism is that Vox promotes unity of Spain, but this dismisses what certain people want. Vox supports the abolition of autonomous communities and therefore, they are against separatist movements such as the Catalan Independence Movement and nationalism of the Basque country. These topics are very delicate, especially for people who support the independence of these communities. The argument of Vox to justify this is that, from an economical point of view, the structure of the autonomous communities is the cause of overspending in regards to the budget of the country. They think that a more centralist country allows the reduction of costs in general for the country.
The reactions of the public include uploads to social media, highlighting the problems that they see with Vox and their policies. It has been compared to the presidency and ideology of Donald Trump, a president that Vox supported openly during his campaign a few years ago. The posts accuse the party of racism, xenophobia, misogyny, anti-feminism, anti-immigration, islamophobia and more so it seems that the public are scared of what will happen in the future following this coalition of Vox with the Peoples party in the new government.
Hace dos semanas empecé el semestre nuevo en Salamanca, haciendo una práctica. Me gusta mucho la ciudad de Salamanca y la empresa con la que trabajo. He disfrutado un viaje a Segovia y Ávila con esta empresa y tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer las ciudades y su belleza. Vimos atracciones como el acueducto, el alcázar de Segovia, la muralla de Ávila y más. Era un viaje increíble y tengo muchas ganas de hacer más viajes como esto para conocer más ciudades españolas y sus monumentos.
La mudanza de Alicante a Salamanca era emocionante debido al cambio de entorno en general. Hasta ahora, las diferencias principales para mí son el tiempo, porque hace mucho frio en Salamanca en comparación con Alicante. También, la ciudad es bastante diferente, pienso que Salamanca es más pequeño, y se puede caminar a todos lugares fácilmente, especialmente alrededor del centro. También, en el lugar en que trabajo, hay una comunidad más cercana así es un ambiente acogedor.
Ahora estoy en la comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León y en este momento, hay una elección para el presidente de la Junta de Castilla y León. Castilla y León consisten en las provincias de Ávila, Burgos, León, Segovia, Palencia, Salamanca, Soria, Valladolid y Zamora. Alfonso Fernández Mañueco es el presidente actual, del Partido Popular y he visto mucho en las calles con su campaña y la elección en general.
Es una elección muy grande, con más de dos millones de votantes. Hay 28 partidos y coaliciones y los ciudadanos están votando para elegir los miembros de las cortes de la comunidad autónomo. He visto muchas pancartas y cosas en las calles de la elección y de las campañas políticas así es un tema muy actual y relevante ahora. Los partidos principales actualmente son: PP (Partido Popular), PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Espanol) y Vox. Hay mucha polémica sobre el tema de la elección y la corrupción que existe así pienso que los españoles que votan están enfocado en un cambio para mejorar la comunidad. No he hablado con mucha gente sobre sus opiniones sobre la elección pero voy a ver más sobre la elección y las respuestas a la situación cuando se publican a los resultados.

Two weeks ago I began the new semester in Salamanca, doing an internship. I like the city of Salamanca and the company that I work with a lot. I had the opportunity to enjoy a trip to Segovia and Avila with this company and we got to know the cities and their highlights. We saw attractions such as the aqueduct, the alcazar of Segovia, the walls of Avila and more. It was an incredible trip and I’m looking forward to going on more trips like this and being able to get to know more Spanish cities and their monuments.
The change from Alicante to Salamanca was exciting due to the change of environment in general. Until now, the main differences for me are the weather, as it is a lot colder in Salamanca compared to Alicante. Also, the city is quite different, I think that Salamanca is a lot smaller, and you can walk everywhere easily, especially to get around the city centre. Also, at the place where I work, there is a very close knit community so it is a very welcoming environment.
Now, I am in the autonomous community of Castilla and Leon and there is an ongoing election for the president of the council of Castilla and Leon. Castilla and Leon consists of the provinces of Avila, Burgos, Leon, Segovia, Palencia, Salamanca, Soria, Valladolid and Zamora. Alfonso Fernandez Manueco is the current president, of the People’s Party and I have seen a lot in the streets regarding his campaign and the election in general.
It’s a very big election, with more than 2 million voters. There are 28 parties and coalitions and the citizens are voting to choose the members of the ´Cortes’ of the autonomous community. I have seen many banners and things in the streets regarding the election and the political campaigns so its a very current and relevant topic here in Salamanca. The main political parties at the moment are: PP, PSOE and Vox. There is a lot of controversy regarding the election and the corruption that exists so I think that the Spanish people that are voting are focused on there being a change to improve this autonomous community. I have not spoken to a lot of people here about their opinions on the situation but I will be seeing more about the election and more responses to it when the results are published.
ste mes el círculo español de la democracia fue finalmente cerrado, ya que el cuerpo de Francisco Franco fue exhumado de su extravagante tumba en el valle de los caídos, a pocos kilómetros de Madrid, y trasladado al mausoleo de su familia. Una decisión que muchos creen que debería haberse tomado hace tiempo, ya que el monumento se diseñó para conmemorar a todos los que murieron durante la guerra civil, pero desde que Franco fue enterrado allí, parecía glorificar su vida y los 40 años de dictadura. Durante una visita de mis padres, Fuimos al Museo de la Reina Sofia, para ver “el Guernica” lo que me permitió aprender más sobre la guerra civil española y los efectos que tuvo en civiles inocentes. El Guernica es una de las pinturas políticas más importantes de Picasso, que representa el horror y la brutalidad de los bombardeos que azotaron la pequeña ciudad de Guernica, situada en el País Vasco, en 1937. Este fue el primer bombardeo masivo de su tipo, matando a miles de civiles inocentes, y más tarde se descubrió que Franco era el responsable.
Guernica es considerada la capital cultural del País vasco, con una fuerte ideología democrática y una independencia centenaria. Dos cosas a las que Franco y su partido nacionalista se opusieron firmemente. Esta pintura fue particularmente importante ya que sirvió también como propaganda, viajando por todo el mundo para concienciar sobre las atrocidades a las que se enfrentaban personas inocentes a manos de Franco. A pesar de que Picasso finalmente quiso que se alojara en España, sólo lo permitiría una vez que se restaurara un gobierno republicano. En 1981 el Guernica desembarcó por primera vez en suelo español, lo que supuso una gran victoria para España y su democracia, desafortunadamente Picasso murió unos años antes, por lo que nunca llegó a verlo. Desafortunadamente, no puedo adjuntar una foto porque las fotos de la pintura no están permitidas.
También hice una excursión de un día a Ávila y Salamanca, dos ciudades históricas al noroeste de Madrid. Esta ciudad fue especialmente protegida por Franco durante la guerra civil, y hace tan sólo dos años, se le habría encontrado la cara en la Plaza Mayor entre todos los reyes y reinas de España pasados y presentes, aunque ahora ha sido eliminada. Me encanta aprender más sobre la historia de España, ya que es muy interesante ver los acontecimientos que dieron forma al país y ver algunas de las razones por las que muchos españoles están orgullosos de la democracia española y de su rica cultura.
This month the Spanish circle of democracy was seen to finally be closed, as Francisco Franco’s body was exhumed from his extravagant grave in the valley of the fallen, a few miles out of Madrid, and moved to his family’s mausoleum. A decision many believe to be long overdue, as the monument was designed to commemorate all who lost their lives during the civil war, but since Franco was buried there, it appeared to glorify his life and the 40 yearlong dictatorship. During a visit from my parents this month, we took the time to go and see the Guernica at the art museum Reina Sofia, which enabled me to learn more about the Spanish civil war, and the effects it had on innocent civilians.
The Guernica was one of Picasso’s most important political paintings, which depicts the horror and brutality of the bombings which hit the small town of Guernica situated in the Basque country in 1937. This was the first mass bombing of its kind, killing thousands of innocent civilians, and later it became evident that the German bomber planes which were responsible for the destruction were sent by Franco himself. Guernica is considered the cultural capital of the Basque people, with a strong democratic ideology and century old independence. Two things Franco and his nationalist party strongly opposed. This painting was particularly important as it served also a propaganda, touring around the world to raise awareness of the atrocities innocent people faced at the hands of Franco. Despite Picasso eventually wanting it to be housed in Spain, he would only allow it back once a republican government was restored. In 1981 the Guernica landed on Spanish soil for the first time, which was a great victory for Spain and its democracy, unfortunately Picasso died a few years prior, so never got to see it. Unfortunately, I can’t upload a photo of the painting because photos were not allowed.
I also went on a day trip to Avila and Salamanca, both historic cities to the north west of Madrid. This city was especially protected by Franco during the civil war, and as little as 2 year ago, you would have found his face in the Plaza Mayor amongst all the past and current Kings and Queens of Spain, although this has now been removed. I love learning more about Spanish history, as it is very interesting to see the events which shaped the country and see some of the reasons why many Spanish people are proud of Spanish democracy and rich culture.
Enero fue un mes muy memorable en mi aventura española – que marcó el aniversario de un año desde que me mudé a este país y cumplí 22. O los “dos patitos”, como lo llaman en español.
Tuve la oportunidad de celebrar mi cumpleaños en Salamanca durante un fin de semana con mis amigos. Para cualquier persona que no haya oído hablar de Salamanca antes, es una ciudad que está más o menos a 2 horas en coche al noreste de Madrid y es el hogar de la universidad más antigua de España (también una de las más antiguas de Europa). Es una de las ciudades más limpias, más cuidadas en las que haya estado – ¡todo está todo tan coordinado! Desde el color de la piedra arenisca de los edificios a la arquitectura, todo encaja perfectamente. Hay muchas joyas ocultas en Salamanca, pero hay 3 cosas en especial que son particularmente famosas para los turistas. El primero trata de encontrar la talla de una rana que se oculta en la pared de la Universidad… se cree si puedes encontrarla te traerá suerte. Los dos siguientes se añadieron realmente durante una restauración de la catedral, pero siguen siendo algo un poco “diferente” – una gárgola que está comiendo un helado y un astronauta. ¡Tanto tallado en la piedra! Nos tomó un tiempo, pero nos las arreglamos para encontrar los 3, espero que nos traiga suerte…!
Una cosa distinta de mis celebraciones cumpleaños es que hemos organizado a ir a Granada para esquiar. ¡Sí….Granada y sí…esquiar! Esquí en el sur de España e ir a la playa en el mismo día…me parece perfecto. ¡Nos vemos pronto Granada!

January – an important month!
January was a land mark month in my Spanish adventure – it marked a year’s anniversary since I moved to this wonderful country and I turned 22! Or “dos patitos” as they call it in Spanish (2 ducks!).
I made the most of the opportunity to celebrate and went away to Salamanca for the weekend with some friends. For anyone that hasn’t heard of Salamanca before it’s a city roughly 2 hours North East of Madrid and is home to the oldest University in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. It’s one of the cleanest cities I think I have ever been to and everything is all so coordinated! From the sandstone color of buildings to their architecture, everything fits perfectly. There are lots hidden gems in Salamanca but there are 3 things in particular that are particular famous to tourists. The first is to the find the carving of a frog which is hidden on the wall of the University…it is believed if you find this it will bring you luck! The next two were added during a restoration of the cathedral but are still something a little “different” which you don’t expect to find in a city like Salamanca among the carvings of a cathedral – a gargoyle eating an ice cream and an astronaut! Both carved into the stone! It took us a while but we managed to find all 3, let’s hope they bring us luck…
On a totally separate note, something I thought I would never say I did in Spain was go skiing. But with a famous resort in Sierra Nevada near Granada just a few hours away, it’s difficult to say no! Skiing in the south of Spain and being able to go to the beach on the same day….perfect! Granada here we come!
