Abril comenzó con un tiempo brillante, durante toda la Semana Santa. Tener la semana libre del trabajo fue una oportunidad para aprovechar al máximo el sol y el hecho de que todo el mundo está pasando todo su tiempo al aire libre. Con algunos nuevos amigos mexicanos, me embarqué en la semana con anticipación y emoción.

La Semana Santa, o Semana Santa, es una importante celebración religiosa en España, y Madrid es conocida por sus elaboradas procesiones que tienen lugar durante esta semana. Las procesiones presentan pasos, que representan escenas de la Pasión de Cristo, llevadas por miembros de las cofradías, vestidas con trajes y capuchas tradicionales. Estas procesiones a veces duran horas y atraen a grandes multitudes de lugareños y turistas. Observé una a la vuelta de la esquina de mi apartamento, mientras las celebraciones viajaban por debajo del Puente de Segovia hasta la Plaza Mayor. Los intrincados detalles de los pasos y las tradicionales túnicas y capuchas usadas por los miembros del cofradías fueron fascinantes de observar. Sentí una sensación de asombro constante, y al nacer en una familia católica, sentí una conexión sorprendente con las profundas raíces religiosas del evento. Hacia el final de la semana viajé a Arroyomolinos para una cena tradicional con un amigo local mío. Comimos comida tradicional del norte de España, donde su familia se originó y conversó toda la noche. En general, asistir a las procesiones de la Semana Santa de Madrid fue una experiencia memorable y significativa.

He seguido asumiendo la responsabilidad en el trabajo, lo cual es vital para mejorar mis habilidades lingüísticas (aunque a veces me desanimo). A lo largo del mes de abril, soy responsable de múltiples eventos, incluyendo un concierto de piano con el Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, entre lanzamientos de libros y otras conferencias académicas. El aumento de la responsabilidad es un desafío que me ha encantado cada segundo, aún no lo sabía en ese momento…

Este mes continué presentando mi show en la popular estación de Madrid Radio Relativa. Organizar un programa de radio y hablar español e inglés es una experiencia emocionante y desafiante que me encanta, especialmente cuando se trata de grabación en vivo. Al hablar ambos idiomas, tienes la oportunidad de llegar a un público más amplio y conectarte con personas de diferentes culturas y orígenes. Discutir la música que es relevante para los hablantes de español e inglés crea un espectáculo diverso y dinámico. Además, cambiar entre idiomas puede ser una forma divertida y creativa de involucrar a los oyentes y mejorar mis habilidades lingüísticas en un entorno más coloquial del que estoy acostumbrado en la oficina. Este es un desafío, ya que he tenido que desarrollar la capacidad de transición sin problemas entre ellos. Con dedicación y coraje, organizar el espectáculo continuará siendo una experiencia gratificante.

Este descansito me ha hecho apreciar que necesito aprovechar al máximo el tiempo que me queda en España. Ha sido una experiencia fenomenal y ha consolidado en mi mente que soy un apasionado de usar mis habilidades lingüísticas en mi carrera. Siempre me interesó la idea de trabajar en un negocio internacional con relaciones en varios países, pero ahora me siento aún más tranquilo por el conocimiento de que me sentiría cómodo trabajando para una empresa que quisiera enviarme al extranjero.

Para concluir, abril ha sido un mes maravilloso hasta ahora y todavía tiene mucho que ofrecer.

April began with brilliant weather, all throughout Semana Santa. Having the week off work was an opportunity to make the absolute most of the sun and the fact that everyone is now spending all of their time outdoors. With some newfound Mexican friends, I took on the week with anticipation and excitement.

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a significant religious observance in Spain, and Madrid is known for its elaborate processions that take place during this week. The processions feature intricate floats, called pasos, that depict scenes from the Passion of Christ, carried by members of religious brotherhoods (cofradías), dressed in traditional robes and hoods. These processions sometimes last for hours and attract large crowds of both locals and tourists. I watched one just round the corner from my apartment, as celebrations travelled down under the Puente de Segovia until the Plaza Mayor. The intricate details of the pasos and the traditional robes and hoods worn by the members of the cofradías were fascinating to observe. I felt a constant sense awe, and being born into a catholic family, I felt a surprising connection to the deep religious roots of the event. Towards the end of the week I travelled to Arroyomolinos for a traditional dinner with a local friend of mine. We ate traditional food from northern Spain where his family originated and conversed all evening. Overall, attending the processions of Semana Santa in Madrid was a memorable and meaningful experience.

I have continued to take on responsibility at work, which is vital to improving my language skills (although nerve-wracking). Throughout April, I am responsible for multiple events, including a piano concert with the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, among book releases and other academic conferences. The increased responsibility is a challenge that I have loved every second of, even if I did not know it at the time…

This month I continued hosting my show on popular Madrid station Radio Relativa. Hosting a radio show and speaking both Spanish and English is an exciting and challenging experience that I love, especially when it comes to live recording. By speaking both languages, you have the opportunity to reach a wider audience and connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Discussing music that is relevant to both Spanish and English speakers creates a diverse and dynamic show. Additionally, switching between languages can be a fun and creative way to engage listeners and improve my language skills in a more colloquial environment than I am used to in the office. This is a challenge, as I have had to develop the ability to seamlessly transition between them. With dedication and courage, hosting the show will continue to be a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

This short break has made me appreciate that I need to make the most of the time that I have left in Spain. It has been a phenomenal experience and has cemented in my mind that I am passionate about using my language skills in my career. I was always keen on the idea of working in an international business with relationships across multiple countries, but I am eased even more now by the knowledge that I would be comfortable working for a company that might like to send me abroad.

To conclude, April has been a wonderful month so far and it still has lots to offer.

Marzo para mí ha sido un mes durante el cual sigo lanzándome a la cultura española con el fin de mejorar mis habilidades lingüísticas tanto como sea posible durante mi tiempo restante aquí. Mi papel en el trabajo sigue aumentando la responsabilidad y la presión, y por supuesto con esto viene el beneficio inevitable de la fluidez. Me están confiando constantemente la responsabilidad de los eventos individuales durante todo el mes, y todos los que hasta este momento han ido con mucho éxito. Por ejemplo, el primer domingo del mes asumí la responsabilidad de un concierto que formaba parte de un ciclo de actuaciones de música clásica que se mostraban durante varios meses. Me hice cargo de todo, desde la organización del alquiler de piano y los planos de las habitaciones, hasta las reservas de habitaciones de hotel de los músicos. Aunque la presión para realizar estas tareas importantes en un segundo idioma me pareció un poco nerviosa, mi éxito al hacerlo hizo que mi confianza fuera un mundo entero de bien; y como sabemos, la confianza es invaluable en los idiomas.

Todavía me esfuerzo para asegurarme de encontrar tiempo para reunirme con mi antiguo colega de trabajo que se ha ido, ya que encuentro que mis habilidades coloquiales en español se han beneficiado más a través de mis conversaciones con él. No solo compartimos una oficina juntos durante muchos meses, sino que también compartimos muchos intereses comunes. Nuestras discusiones de cultura, música y arte dentro de la cultura de habla hispana han llevado a que muchos de mis días libres sean pasados en centros culturales específicos por recomendación suya. Recientemente, viajé en transporte público a Barajas, para una exposición anual de arte llamada ARCOmadrid. Este fue un centro para coleccionistas, compradores, vendedores y público en general para reunir y apreciar algunas exposiciones y vitrinas exclusivas. La exposición era demasiado grande para ver absolutamente todo, pero me quedé completamente impresionado por lo que pasé el tiempo viendo. ARCO es un proyecto que tiene lugar en todo el mundo, así que espero poder visitar las exposiciones en otras ciudades sabiendo lo que he visto aquí en España. Espero ver lo que las muchas galerías y centros culturales de Madrid tienen para ofrecer durante el resto del mes, especialmente con la prominencia del Mes Internacional de la Historia de la Mujer.

Este mes también tuve la oportunidad de viajar en tren a Valencia para el festival de Las Falles. Se trata de un festival de temporada que tiene lugar en Valencia y sus pueblos circundantes, y que cuenta con grandes reuniones para exhibiciones pirotécnicas. La exhibición fue fenomenal, el ruido de los fuegos artificiales resonó por las calles y miles salieron a las calles para compartir comida y bebidas bajo el sol caliente. Estar en torno a una tradición tan importante para el pueblo valenciano fue un placer, ya que me quedó muy claro lo importante que son estas tradiciones para los españoles, particularmente los de su propia región autónoma. Los valencianos tienen un gran orgullo regional por su cultura, tradiciones e idioma, por lo que ser testigo de esto en el pico de la celebración es algo que nunca olvidaré.

En general, el mes hasta ahora se ha hecho grande por la empresa. Las noches heladas se han pasado con amigos y compañeros de piso perseverando para hacer risas y alegrías, y me siento muy cerca de todo lo que he conocido aquí en Madrid en las últimas semanas. He sido honrado por dar a un par de mis compañeros de piso clases de cocina después de que se impresionaron por las comidas que estaba cocinando. Esta ha sido una gran experiencia de unión y, aunque los platos no necesariamente han incluido gastronomía británica, ha sido una experiencia brillante para compartir cultura.

March for me has been a month during which I continue to throw myself into Spanish culture in order to improve my language skills as much as possible for my remaining time here. My role at work continues to increase responsibility and pressure, and of course with this comes the inevitable benefit of fluency. I am being consistently trusted with responsibility for individual events throughout the month, and all of those up to this point have gone very successfully. For example, on the first Sunday of the month I took responsibility for a concert that held a part in a cycle of classical music performances being showed over several months. I took charge of everything from the organisation of the piano rental and the floorplans of the rooms, down to the hotel room reservations of the musicians. Though I found the pressure to perform these important tasks in a second language a little nerve-wracking, my success in doing so did my confidence a whole world of good; and as we know, confidence is invaluable in languages.

I still strive to ensure I find time to meet up with my old work colleague who has since left, as I find my colloquial Spanish skills have benefitted the most through my discussions with him. Not only did we share an office together for many months, but we also share many common interests. Our discussions of culture, music and art within Spanish-speaking culture have led to many of my days off being spent in specific cultural centers at his recommendation. Recently, I travelled by public transport out to Barajas, for an annual art exposition named ARCOMadrid. This was a hub for collectors, buyers, sellers, and general public to gather and appreciate some exclusive exhibitions and showcases. The exposition was too large to see absolutely everything, but I was thoroughly impressed by what I did spend time viewing. ARCO is a project that takes place across the world, so I look forward to possibly visiting the expositions in other cities knowing what I have seen here in Spain. I look forward to seeing what the many galleries and cultural centers of Madrid have to offer over the remainder of the month, especially with the prominence of International Women’s History Month.

This month I also had the opportunity to travel by train to Valencia for Las Falles festival. This is a seasonal festival that takes place in Valencia and its surrounding towns, and features large gatherings for pyrotechnic displays. The display was phenomenal, the noise from the fireworks rang through the streets and thousands took to the streets to share food and drinks under the hot sun. Being around such an important tradition for the Valencian people was a pleasure, as it was very clear to me how important these traditions are to Spanish people, particularly those of their own autonomous region. Valencians have a great sense of regional pride in their culture, traditions and language, so witnessing this at the peak of celebration is something I will never forget.

Overall, the month so far has been made great by the company. The freezing cold nights have been spent with friends and flat mates persevering to make laughter and joy, and I feel very close to all that I have met out here in Madrid in recent weeks. I have been honored by giving a couple of my flat mates cooking lessons after they were impressed by the meals I was producing. This has been a great bonding experience and although the dishes haven’t necessarily included British cuisine, it has been a brilliant culture-sharing experience.
