  • Ashton Lily-Woolley – Madrid Spain, May 2015

     

    Pues, eso es mi último informe para John Speak y me gustaría daros muchísimas gracias por darme la oportunidad de escribir sobre mis experiencias de cada mes y tener las oportunidades de viajar o hacer unas actividades cuando no estoy trabajando. Este mes fui a Murcia para el festival SOS.

    El festival era completamente diferente a cualquier festival de Inglaterra- sandalias, monos y gafas de sol. Ninguna bota de agua y, definitivamente, no habían abrigos. Cogí un autobús de noche a Murcia después de trabajar y el jueves nos fuimos a Alicante para tomar el sol en la playa (hicimos unas trenzas de pelo) y luego por la noche mi amiga me enseño la vida nocturna de Murcia. Es muy diferente a Madrid. Hay más estudiantes y nadie habla español.

    El viernes fue un tormento para levantarme, no pude dormir mucho en el autobús de noche y no tuve mucho tiempo para dormir el jueves. Por suerte el festival no comenzó hasta el mediodía, así que tuvimos un montón de tiempo para dormir y prepáranos. El festival no era tan lejos del piso y nos lleguemos justo para ver a Morrisey. Aunque soy una gran seguidora de The Smiths. También vimos a Metronomy y a Las Vaccines que eran increíbles vivos. La comida no era demasiada cara y la cerveza tampoco, aunque tuvimos que comprar todas las cosas con fichas que fue un poco complicado porque estábamos de prisa a llegar a todos los conjuntos a tiempo.

    El festival era dos días de duración por lo que el sábado fuimos a comer algo muy rápidamente en el sol e hicimos una pequeña visita por la ciudad de Murcia y después fuimos corriendo al piso de mi amiga para estar listas para la segunda parte del festival. Yo no sabía a ninguno de los grupos de música que tocaban el sábado pero lo disfrutamos aún con todas las personas que estaban allí. Incluso unos compañeros de trabajo fueron al festival SOS. Solo podía solicitar un día de vacaciones entonces volví a  Madrid el domingo pero ha sido un tiempo increíble y sin duda volvería a Murcia otro fin de semana.

    Sólo me quedan siete semanas de mis prácticas en Madrid y siento muy emocionante. Mis dieciocho meses en el extranjero casi han terminado y ha sido el mejor recuerdo de mi vida. Ya estoy planeando otro viaje al extranjero después de terminar la carrera pero a algún sitio más lejos, como los Estados Unidos. Mi tiempo en el extranjero ha aumentado la confianza increíblemente y me siento más independiente como una persona. Ya no tengo miedo de hablar con desconocidos o para pedir ayuda. No voy a tener miedo de ir a un bar sola que nunca habría hecho en casa. En general, esta experiencia ha tenido un gran impacto en mi vida y nunca lo olvidaré.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    So this is my last ever report for John Speak and I’d like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to write about my experiences every month and being able to do some extra travelling or activities when I’m not working!

    This month I went to Murcia for the SOS festival.

    It was completely different to any English festival – sandals, playsuits and sunglasses. No wellies and definitely no raincoats!! I took a night bus to Murcia after work and on the Thursday we went to Alicante to sunbathe on the beach (got a hair braid) and then in the evening my friend showed me the night life. It is completely different to Madrid. There are so many more students and nobody speaks Spanish!

    Friday was a nightmare getting up, I didn’t really get any sleep on the night bus and I didn’t have much time to sleep on the Thursday. Luckily the festival didn’t start till mid-afternoon so we had plenty of time to sleep and get ready. The festival was walking distance and we made it just on time for Morrisey!!! Although I’m a bigger fan of The Smiths. We also watched Metronomy and the Vaccines who were both incredible live. The food wasn’t too overpriced and neither was the beer although you had to buy everything in tokens which made things a little complicated because we were rushing to get to all the sets on time.

    The festival was two days long so on the Saturday we had a quick lunch in the sun and a little tour of the city and rushed home to get ready for part two. I didn’t know any of the bands that played on the Saturday but I still had so much fun with everybody. Even a couple of work colleagues went to the festival. I could only book one day off work so I went back to Madrid on the Sunday but I still had an amazing time and would definitely go back for another weekend.

    I only have seven weeks of my internship left in Madrid which is quite emotional. My eighteen months abroad is almost over and it has been the best time of my life. I’m already planning another trip abroad after I graduate but to somewhere further away, maybe America.

    My time abroad has incredibly boosted my confidence and I am more independent as a person.

    I’m no longer scared to talk to strangers or ask for help. I won’t be afraid to sit in a café by myself which I would never have done back at home.

    Overall, this experience has had a huge impact on my life and I will never forget it.

    Estoy disfrutando mucho mi tiempo aquí; Palma es un lugar tan bonito, hay muchísimas cosas para hacer y ver y finalmente el tiempo esta increíble. Para Semana Santa mi novio vino aquí por 4 días, el vuelo fue un poco caro porque Semana Santa es una feria en Palma y hay muchas fiestas que duran casi dos semanas que significa que los precios siempre están altos. De todos modos, valió la pena porque no nos vimos para mucho tiempo y estaba muy bien para pasar algunos días juntos.  Cuando llegó el viernes fuimos a una restaurante que está situada en el puerto, se llama Mar de Nudos, al principio decidíamos solo tomar algo para beber pero cuando nos vimos la comida de los otros clientes nos cambiamos de idea! La comida estaba buenísima, una de las comidas mejores que hemos comido, además el tiempo estaba tan agregable y pasábamos un día estupendo.

    El sábado fuimos a una playa que se llama Ses Illetes, que está ubicada 30 minutes en bus del centro de Palma, está muy bonita, el mar es tan claro y las vistas son impresionantes. Cuando llegamos, tomamos algo en el bar y allí nos vimos el jugador de futbol famoso y estrella tv de ´A league of their own´, Jamie Redknapp en la playa con su familia, no podíamos creerlo, pero después nos descubrimos que él tiene una villa aquí.

    También, el sábado pasado mis amigos y yo alquilamos un minivan por todo el día, no estuve muy cara porque haya 9 personas para compartir el precio, que estuve bien. Nos visitamos dos playa tan bonitas, una de las dos es una playa totalmente natural, no hay bares, facilidades o algo así, ¡simplemente el mar, la arena y el sol! Mallorca verdaderamente es una isla bonita.

    Otra cosa interesante para mí fue el martes de esta semana, porque tenía la oportunidad de ir a un de los mejores hoteles de Melia que es 5 estrellas, que está situado al lado del mar con vistas panorámicas magnificentes. Fui con mi jefe porque ella ha organizado todo para este grande evento que fue para todos los jefes importantes y empleadores de Melia de todos los diferentes regiones. Mi jefe mi dije que sería muy interesante para asistir el evento para ver cómo se funcionan las cosas  y para aprender nuevas cosas de la empresa y del tema de Marketing Digital. Para el almuerzo haya un buffet de comida caliente y frio, postres y bebidas y todo estuve gratis. Fue muy interesante y beneficial para mí para escuchar a todas las presentaciones en español y también para participar en los workshops.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    I’m enjoying my time here; Palma is a beautiful place, there´s lots of things to do and see and finally, the weather is amazing! For Easter my boyfriend came here for 4 days, the flight was a little bit expensive because here in Palma Easter is a Bank Holiday and there´s lots of celebrations that last about 2 weeks which means that the prices are always quite high. Anyway, it was worth it as we hadn´t seen each other for a while and it was really nice to spend time together. When he arrived on Friday we went to a restaurant on the port, called Mar de Nudos, in the beginning we were just going to have a drink but when we saw the other customers food we changed our minds! The food was so nice, one of the best meals we have had, plus, the weather was great and we had a really nice day.

    Saturday we went to a beach called Ses Illetes, which is situated about 30 minutes from the centre of Palma, it´s so pretty, the sea is so clear and the views are amazing. When we arrived we had a drink in the bar and there we saw the famous football player and TV star of A league of their own´ Jamie Redknapp on the beach with his family, we couldn´t believe it, but later we found out that he has his own villa here in Palma.

    Also, last Saturday me and my friends hired a minivan for the day, it wasn´t very expensive because there were 9 people to share the price which was good. We visited 2 beautiful beaches, one of the two was completely natural, there weren´t any bars, facilities or anything like that, just the sea, the sand and the sun! Mallorca truly is a beautiful island.

    Another interesting thing for me was on Tuesday this week, because I had the opportunity to go to one of Meliá´s 5 star hotels, that´s situated right next to the sea with magnificent panoramic views. I went with my boss as she has organized everything for this huge event that was for all the important bosses and employees from all the different regions. My boss said to me that it would be really interesting to attend the event to see how things work and to learn new things about the business and the subject of Digital Marketing. For lunch there was a buffet with hot and cold food, desserts and drinks, and everything was free. It was really interesting and beneficial for me to listen to all the presentations in Spanish and to take part in the workshops.

    Este mes, he sido muy relacionado al trabajo, tengo muchos venicimientos a cumplir y como solo me quedan once semanas de la prácticas estoy decidida a terminar todos mis trabajos antes de irme. Sin embargo, no es todo trabajo como nos dieron un fin de semana de cuatro días agradables para Semana Semanta, decidí viajar un poquito.

    Tengo unos amigos que están con las prácticas en Málaga y en Marbella así que lo aproveché y organicé un viaje para visitar a los dos. Mi compañera de trabajo iba ir a Granada entoncés después de hablar con ella sobre mis planes me ofreció ir con ellas así que podría estar una horas allí y después cogí el autobús por la tarde a Málaga que solo tardó una hora y media en llegar. Solo estaba en Grandada unas horas pero el sol brillaba y las cosas que ví allí fueron fantasticas.

    La empresa donde estoy una becaria también tiene una oficina en Málaga entonces algunos de mis compañeros escribieron un listado de los sitios que deberíá visitar. Llegué allí por la tarde pero las procésiones ya han empezado. No quedé en el piso de mi amiga, encontré un sitio en AirBnb, estaba situada cerca del piso de mi amiga. Era super barato y el anfitrío era muy simpático. Habían más viajeros en el apartamento así que fue genial.

    Durante la primera noche, vimos a unas de las procésiones y después nos fuimos a un bar que se llama ‘El pimpi’. Es un bar muy conocido cerca del Castillo y el vino es buenísimo.

    Hicimos una vuelta buenísma al Castillo la mañana siguiente y las vistas eran impresionantes, se puede ver al puerto y al estadio de fútbol. Por la tarde, encontramos con otros estudiantes y fuimos a una bar que se llama Mañana – vale tres euros por dos horas de cerveza libre pero era muy dificíl a llegar. Con las procésiones era imposible a llegar a cualquier sitio. También conocí a unas personas que estaban de vacaciones de Madrid y también de la misma ciudad de Inglattera! Es un mundo muy pequeño.

    El otro amigo vive en Marbella entonces fuimos allí también, aunque si cuento la verdad solo nos fuimos para cenar la comida de Hard Rock Café y comprar una camiseta. El tiempo era terrible por la tarde pero el pueblo es muy bonito para visitar. Más tarde, tomamos una bebida enfrente de la catedral y nos fuimos a dormir muy pronto para estar lista para mi viaje inesperado de nueve horas para volver a Madrid.

     

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    This month has been mainly work related, I have so many deadlines at work to meet and as I only have 11 week left of my placement I am determined to finish them all on time. However, it’s not all work as we got a lovely four day weekend at Easter, I decided to do a little bit of travelling.

    I have a couple of friends that are doing their placements in Malaga and Marbella so I took advantage and made plans to visit them both. My work colleague was going to Granada so after chatting to her about my plans she offered to take me with her so I could spend a few hours there and then I caught the bus in the afternoon to Malaga which just took an hour and a half. I was only in Granada for a couple of hours but the sun was shining and the bits that I did see were fantastic.

    The company where I’m doing my work placement also have an office in Malaga so some of my work colleagues wrote me a list of places that I should visit. I got there late afternoon but the processions had already started. I didn’t stay with my friend, I found a place to stay on AirBnb which was around the corner from my friend’s apartment. It was so cheap and the host was really nice. There were other travellers in the apartment so that was great.

    On the first night we saw a couple of the processions and then headed to a bar called ‘El Pimpi’. It’s a very popular bar near the castle and the wine is beautiful.

    We had a nice walk up to the castle the next morning and the views were breath-taking, you can see the port and the football stadium. In the evening we met up with some other students and we went to a bar called Mañana – its 3 euros for two hours of unlimited beer but extremely hard to reach. The processions made it almost impossible to reach anywhere. I also met some people that were on holiday from Madrid and also from my home town in England! It’s a very small world.

    My other friend lives in Marbella so we visited there too, although if I’m honest we just went there for the Hard Rock Café food and for a t-shirt. The weather was quite terrible in the afternoon but it was still a nice town to visit. In the evening, we had a drink across from the cathedral and then an early night ready for my unexpected nine hour journey back home.

  • Siân Summerton – Case Study Barcelona, Spain (2015)

    As I chose to study French, Spanish and EU Studies (MA Hons) at the University of Edinburgh, I was aware that this would involve a year working or studying abroad in 2014-2015. The idea of working had always appealed to me, as ideally I wanted the opportunity to use my languages in a professional working environment.

    From June to November 2014, I spent six months working as the Social Policy and Public Health assistant for Commission 2 of the Assembly of European Regions (AER) in Strasbourg, France. Working as part of an international team, my duties included translation, event management, speech writing, building and managing websites, contacting MEPs/ speakers and managing social media. I also conducted research which contributed towards consultations for the European Commission. In this post, I learnt how to prioritise different tasks and successfully worked on a number of high-profile projects simultaneously.

    I cannot emphasise enough just how educational and enjoyable this experience was, and I was delighted to be awarded a lot of responsibility in this post.

    Leaving Strasbourg, AER and a group of wonderful friends and colleagues was absolutely heart-breaking, but I knew that I still had an exciting time in Spain to look forward to!

    I was fortunate to gain a post in the centre of Barcelona from January to April 2015, working for a wine and spirits merchant called ‘Decantalo’, focusing on marketing, communication and translation. This involved communication with English-speaking clients, fulfilling orders, responding to queries and providing detailed advice on a wide number of wines, champagnes and spirits. Moreover, I was fortunate to further my marketing and translation skills through working on the website and the blog, including writing a number of articles. I also became confident using ERP systems and obviously my confidence and Spanish language skills improved immensely.

    I am now commencing my last 2 weeks in Barcelona and simply cannot believe how quickly the past year has gone.

    I have now been away for a staggering 41 weeks, although it seems like yesterday that I was boarding the plane to Strasbourg, terrified at the prospect of a new language, a new country, a new city and a new job!

    Over the past year, I have made friends from around the globe, had a wealth of enriching experiences and developed as an individual, both on a professional and a personal level. I know that the skills gained over the past year will remain with me for the rest of my life.

    Nunca he estado en unos bares tan increíbles en mi vida como los bares de madrid. Una tarde, se puede visitar a un iglú, o a una playa y otra tardes se puede entrar en un bar que se parece como un salón de IKEA. Hace una semana, mi compañera de trabajo me mandó un link para un coupon de Groupon de dos entradas para entrar al bar de hielo de Madrid, un coctél de entrada y otra bebida cada una. Decidí ir un sábado por la noche con una amiga que estaba visitando a Madrid desde Murcia, no hicimos una reserva entonces tuvimos que esperar sobre una hora pero valió la pena. Hacía menos ocho grados en el bar entonces nos dieron un abrigo térmico para poner en el bar – hacíá tanto frío. Recomendo que llevaís un par de guantes para disfrutar a las bebidas! El tiempo ha sido genial por las últimas semanas y estabamos vestidas para salir entonces no tuvimos guantes L.

    Si te apetece hacer algo más diferente puedes ir a Ojalá. He estado una vez pero tienes que reservar una mesa aquí también entonces solo he estado en el restaurante de la segunda planta pero la segunda vez recordábamos reservar una. En la primera planta hay otro sitio para comer algo, parece como una playa, hace bastante calor y las luces están sombrías, por lo tanto, había un ambiente relajante. Hay unas sofás y mesas casí en el suelo entonces os aviso que no cenaís en la primera planta como lo hicimos nosotras jaja, tuvimos que tener mucho cuidado para no tener arena en nuestra cena. La comida es international entonces pedí una empanada de pollo que me recordó de mi casa en Inglaterra.

    El fin de semana pasado no teníá nada organizado solo queria hacer los deberes de la Universidad pero mi compañera de piso me convenció a tomar algo en La Ciudad. No creo que es un bar muy conocido porque no habíá tanta gente cuando lleguemos entonces sentamos en unas de las mesas de abajo. La zona de sentar está decorada como un salón de casa, hay sillónes grandes, pinturas y arte en las paredes y también hay estantes de libros en las dos plantas lleno de guías de viajes para varios países y libros en todos los idiomas. La comida es include mejor que el décor y muy barata! Pidimos un plato turco para compartir y una ensalada como verano se acerca.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

    I have never been to such incredible bars in my whole entire life like the ones here in Madrid. One night you can find yourself in an ice cold igloo, or a beach and other nights you can wander into a bar that resembles an IKEA living room. A few weeks ago, my work colleague sent me a link for a Groupon voucher for two entrance tickets to go to the Madrid ice bar, a free entrance cocktail each and a second drink. I decided to go one Saturday night with a friend that was visiting from Murcia, we hadn’t booked so we had to wait around an hour but it was definitely worth it. It was -8 degrees so they gave us a thermal jacket to wear inside – it was absolutely freezing. I definitely recommend taking gloves to enjoy the drink! The weather has been pretty great for the last few weeks and we were dressed to go out after so we didn’t take any. 🙁

    If you want to go to a completely opposite bar then you should check out Ojalá. I’ve been once before but you have to reserve a table here too so I’ve only eaten in the restaurant area upstairs but the second time we remembered to reserve a table. Downstairs there is another eating area which is like a beach, it’s quite warm and the lights are dimmed so it has a relaxing feel to it. There are little sofas and tables off the ground so I don’t advise you to eat there like we did haha, we had to be extra careful not to get sand in our dinner. The food is international so I ordered a chicken pie which made me miss home a little.

    This weekend I hadn’t planned to do anything but university work but my roommate persuaded me to go for a drink at La Ciudad. I don’t think it’s a very well-known bar as it wasn’t very busy when we arrived so we got a table downstairs. The sitting area downstairs is decorated like a living room, there are huge armchairs to sit in, paintings and wall art and there are bookshelves on both floors full of travel guides for different countries and story books in all different languages. The food is even better than the décor and very cheap! We ordered a Turkish dish to share and then a salad as the Spanish summer is approaching.

    Sian has spent the first semester of her third year working in Strasbourg, France.  She is studying a 4 year undergraduate degree in French, Spanish and European Union Studies.

    From September 2014 Sian has been working as a Marketing, Communication and Translation Intern for Decantala (a Barcelona-based wine merchant).

    Ashton Lily Woolley – Madrid Carnaval 2015

    Celebrated annually in the week before Lent in the Spanish capital of Madrid, Carnaval brings the city to life with parades, processions and parties – all the things the Spanish do best. Centred around the Paseo de la Florida in the city centre, Carnaval is an explosion of colour and sound as Spanish citizens from across the country take to the streets to celebrate the national tradition of pulling their collective tongue out at the prevailing social order. Enjoy a range of activities from fancy dress competitions to an evening concert in the Plaza Mayor. Don’t miss the grand finale of the Carnaval festival, as the traditional ‘burial of the sardine’ ceremony takes place – a symbolic burial of fun times, in preparation for the solemn (and meat-free) time of lent.

     ¡Mis primeras semanas en Barcelona!

    Llegué en Barcelona al principio de enero. Acabé de pasar seis meses en Francia, así que estaba un poco preocupada por el choque cultural y el cambio de idioma.

    Durante las vacaciones de Navidad, entre mis periodos de prácticas distintos, pasé un par de semanas en casa, leyendo tanto como sea posible sobre Barcelona, organizando mi alojamiento y ordenando mi seguridad social.

    En cuanto llegué, primero estaba golpeada por el tamaño de la ciudad y segundo por el uso amplio de catalán dentro de la ciudad que es, fundamentalmente, bilingüe. Afortunadamente, había finalizado un curso corto de catalán antes de mudarme a Francia, lo que significa que, junto con mi conocimiento de francés y español, podía entender el significado de muchas palabras catalanas.
    Elegí vivir con una estudiante española de doctorado que es de Barcelona, y no habla nada inglés.
    Para mí, éste era perfecto como sabía que el apartamento sería tranquilo y acogedor, pero también tendría un montón de oportunidades de hablar en español, ¡y de vez en cuando en catalán básico!

    Actualmente trabajo 40 horas cada semana para una empresa española de vinos y destilados que se llama Decántalo, principalmente en marketing, comunicación y traducción. Me tomó varios días para conseguir mi cabeza del vocabulario español relevante y la gama de programas de software y bases de datos complejas, pero la verdad es que ahora puedo decir que confío en este trabajo y estoy disfrutando mucho esta oportunidad.

    La mayoría del día dedico a atender las consultas de clientes y la generación de pedidos de todo tamaño, desde pequeños envíos privados hasta los por mayor. Tengo mucho trabajo a hacer en los impuestos, sobretodo porque a menudo trabajo con los clientes suizos que, por lo tanto no pagan impuestos europeos. El idioma común en la oficina es español, con un interno cada uno responsable de la gestión del mercado anglófono, el mercado francófono y el mercado alemán.
    Las añadas de los vinos también se actualizan a diario y recibimos una serie de nuevos vinos y licores cada semana, así que también trabajo en la traducción de estas descripciones del español al inglés.

    Mis colegas son todos muy atentos y me han dado un montón de consejos sobre la ciudad incluyendo lugares para visitar, el mejor banco para unirme, planes de teléfonos, restaurantes… ¡Estoy muy agradecida por su experiencia! También he tenido la suerte de hacerme buenos amigos con los otros internos, y a menudo cenamos o tomamos algo juntos después del trabajo.

    ¡En conclusión, estoy disfrutando completamente de Barcelona! Es una ciudad absolutamente maravillosa, con mucho a ofrecer. Espero que pueda explorar más durante los próximos meses. El ritmo de mi trabajo es rápido e intenso y estoy disfrutando de ser desafiada y trabajar en varias tareas al mismo tiempo. Acaban de pedirme escribir un artículo sobre el Scotch Whisky para el sitio web, le informaré de mi progreso en el próximo reportaje.

     

    Barcelona, Spain

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION

    I arrived in Barcelona at the beginning of January. I had just spent six months in France and was therefore quite worried about the culture and language shock!

    Over Christmas I had a couple of weeks at home between internships, spending as much time as possible reading about Barcelona, sorting out accommodation and national security.

    Upon arriving, I was firstly struck by the size of Barcelona and secondly by just how widely spoken Catalan is in the city, Barcelona is essentially a bilingual city. Thankfully, I had taken a short course of Catalan before I moved to France, meaning that, together with my knowledge of French and Spanish, I could grasp the meaning of many Catalan words.

    I chose to live with a Spanish PHD student from Barcelona, who does not speak any English. For me, this was the perfect arrangement as I knew that the apartment would be quiet and welcoming, but I would also have plenty of opportunities to speak in Spanish, and occasionally in basic Catalan!

    I currently work 40 hours a week for a Spanish wine and spirits company called Decantalo, primarily in marketing, communication and translation. It took me several days to get my head around the relevant Spanish vocabulary and a variety of rather complex software programs and databases, but I can honestly now say that I am confident in this post and very much enjoying this opportunity.

    The majority of my day is spent dealing with customer queries and generating orders of all sizes, from small private shipments right up to wholesale. I have a lot of work to do on tax, especially as I often work with Swiss clients who therefore do not pay European taxes. The common language within the office is Spanish, with an intern each responsible for managing the Anglophone market, the Francophone market and the German-speaking market. Wine vintages are also updated on a daily basis and we receive a number of new wines and spirits each week, so I work on translating these descriptions from Spanish into English.

    My colleagues are all incredibly helpful and have given me a lot of advice about the city- places to visit, the best bank to join, phone plans, restaurants to eat in…I am incredibly grateful for their expertise! I have also been fortunate to become good friends with the other interns, and we have dinner or drinks together regularly after work.

    In conclusion, I am thoroughly enjoying Barcelona! It is an absolutely wonderful city with so much to offer, I hope to explore it more over the coming months. My job is fast-paced and I enjoy being challenged and working on several tasks simultaneously. I have just been asked to write an article on Scotch Whisky for the website, so I shall update you of my progress in the next report!

    En realidad no he estado haciendo mucho desde que escribí mi último informe. Aunque, volví a mi casa de Inglaterra por Navidad para pasar tiempo con mi familia, amigos y con mi novio que no he sido muy aventurera en Madrid.

    Cumplí y celebré mi cumpleaños de 21 años en Inglaterra que era absolutamente increíble. Toda mi familia y familia distantes vinieron y también los que no les había visto desde que he estado en España y mis mejores amigos volvieron a casa también de la universidad, que era tan guay.

    La primera semana de trabajo era extremadamente dolorosa. Tenía que ponerse al día  con todos mis correos sin leídos, todos los días de vacaciones pendientes y los miles de incidencias pero estaba muy feliz de estar de vuelta. Decidí llevar una cosa de comida inglesa cada día para mis compañeras del departamento por toda la primera semana que me había traído en mi maleta; party rings, mini cheddars, Jaffa cakes y una barra de chocolate de Dairy Milk.

    La segunda semana no fue tan malo porque todas mis tareas estaban terminados y muchos de los empleados todavía estaban disfrutando sus vacaciones de Navidad, así la empresa estaba medio vacía. Justo antes que tomara mis vacaciones, estaba en un curso de recursos humanos para un nuevo programa que estamos poniendo para la empresa donde recibí dos certificados pero todavía tengo que practicar como utilizar el programa por todas las tardes.

    Otro de nuestro amigo terminó su período de Erasmus este fin de semana por lo tanto decidimos tener una fiesta durando toda la semana. El primer día nos fuimos a nuestro restaurante mexicano favorito: La Tierra, si vas por Happy Hour, se puede  comprar una jarra de litro de margarita de fresa con un enorme plato de nachos y solo cuesta catorce euros.

    El viernes fuimos a otro de nuestros restaurantes favoritos que se llama Alhambra y se ha convertido a una tradición semanal para nosotros. Cada semana, nuestros amigos traen más amigos y siempre nos terminamos la noche a conocer a alguien nuevo cada vez. Cuesta diez euros cada uno y siempre tenemos muchas cosas para comer y mucha cerveza a tomar por todo el fin de semana. La mayoría de nosotros vivimos cerca de Calle Fuencarral o en Malasaña así que siempre hay un nuevo bar para irnos después de cenar. Este fin de semana nos fuimos a Vacaciones para tomar unos cócteles.

    El domingo fuimos a La Bicicleta para el “Brunch.” Es una cafetería cerca de nuestros apartamentos y está lleno de estudiantes haciendo sus deberes y estudiando para los exámenes. Hay agua gratis encima de las mesas y tantas cosas para pedir. Para terminar  nuestro fin de semana, cenamos a 100 Montaditos. Creo que lo he mencionado esto en un informe anterior pero todas las cosas cuestan un euro todos los domingos.

     

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION

    I haven’t really been up to much since I wrote my last report. Although, I did go home for Christmas to spend time with my family, friends and boyfriend I haven’t been very adventurous in Madrid.

    I celebrated my 21st birthday in England which was absolutely amazing. All of my family and distant relatives came along who I hadn’t seen since being in Spain and my best friends were home from university which was just as great.

    The first week of work was extremely painful. I had to catch up on all of my unread emails, all the pending holidays and the thousands of untouched incidents but I was happy to be back. I decided to bring in one piece of food everyday that I had brought back in my suitcase; party rings, mini cheddars, jaffa cakes and dairy milk chocolate.

    The second week wasn’t as bad as all my work was caught up on and people were still enjoying their Christmas holidays so the company was half empty. Just before I took my holidays, I was in a HR course for a new programme that we are launching for the company where I received two certificates but I still have to practise using the programme every afternoon.

    Yet another friend finished their Erasmus period this weekend so we decided to have a week long leaving party for him. In the week we went to everyone’s favourite Mexican restaurant: La Tierra, if you go for happy hour, you can buy a litre jug of strawberry margarita with a huge plate of nachos for fourteen euros.

    On Friday we went to another of our favourite restaurants called Alhambra which has become a kind of weekly tradition. Every week, people bring more of their friends and we always end up meeting somebody new every single time. It costs around ten euros each and we always have heaps to eat and enough beer to last us all weekend.  Most of us live near Calle Fuencarral or in Malasaña so there is always a new bar to try afterwards. This weekend we went to Vacaciones for cocktails.

    On Sunday we went to La Bicicleta for brunch. It’s a café just round the corner from our apartments and is full of students doing their homework and studying for exams. There is free water on the tables and so many things to order. To end off our weekend, we had dinner at 100 Montaditos. I’ve probably mentioned this in a previous report but everything is one Euro on Sundays.

    El Rastro vintage (second hand) market, Madrid – Nov 2014

    Después de cuatro meses de vivir en madrid, un amigo me recomendió que ibamos a un mercado, el fin de semana anterior ha comprado una chaqueta de Levis por diez euros. Mis compañeros de piso y yo fuimos al Rastro el domingo pasado. El Rastro es un mercado de segundo mano en el centro de Madrid. Está en Madrid todos los domingos por las mañanas hasta las tres de la tarde.

    Nos levantamos pronto y nos fuimos al banco con la esperanza de encontrar algunas golosinas y caminamos hacia el mercado. En nuestro camino al mercado, pasamos por la Plaza Mayor, donde había una docena de unas coleccionistas de sellos. Tenían miles de sellos en una variedad de libros grandes, como los albúmes de fotos. Los sellos fueron antiguos y de una serie de generaciones. Había incluso un sello que valía 250 euros. Mis compañeros de piso querian comprar unos sellos entonces elegí los sellos más “españoles” que tenían – toros dibujados en ellos. La colección tenía unos 15 sellos en él y me costó un gran precio de 1.50.

    Al final, pensé que la compra de los sellos fuera una buena idea porque cuando estaba en Italia, empecé a coleccionar cosas de los 18 meses que he estado en el extranjero y me gustaría hacer un libro de recuerdos cuando vuelva a Inglaterra. Pensé de la idea cuando estaba comprando postales cuando estaba en una ciudad o pueblo diferente. Ahora guardo todos los billetes de tren, tarjetas de restaurant para ponerlos en mi libro de recuerdos … y ahora tengo sellos españoles.

    El mercado era enorme. Había cientos de puestos en el mercado situados en un montón de las calles y en las plazas. Los puestos vendieron cosas de todo tipo. Estaban los puestos de los mercados comunes que se vean en Inglaterra, los puestos que venden ropa y gafas de sol pero la mayoría de los puestos estaban llenos de cosas antinguas y más bonitas; chaquetas, bolsos de piel, joyas … Habían muchas personas viendo la variedad de músicos en la calle también.

    Creo que una de las mejores cosas sobre el mercado era que está situado en una calle que está llena de tiendas de antigüedades. Las tiendas de antigüedades han puesto todo de su mejor colección en la calle donde estaba el mercado y luego, si querías saber o ver más información de la colección que había por fuera podría entrar en la tienda. También hubo callejones que estaban detrás de las tiendas, habíá más colleccionistas. Compré una petaca, el pensamiento de los precios de alcohol en la vuelta a Inglaterra me maté un poco por dentro.

    Fuimos del mercado sobre las dos y compramos la comida para una comida de los compañeros. Hemos comprador un pollo asado, arroz, patatas fritas, ensalada, pan, nuggets de pollo, empanada y croquetas … una interpretación española de la “comida de los domingos.”

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION

    After four months of living in Madrid and being recommended to go by a friend that had picked up a Levis jacket the last weekend for ten Euros, my house mates and I decided to go to El Rastro last Sunday. El Rastro is a vintage (second hand) market in the centre of Madrid. It is on every Sunday between sometime in the morning until three o’clock in the afternoon.

    We all got up, went to the bank hoping to find some treats and walked towards the market. On our way to the market we passed by Plaza Mayor, where there were a dozen stamp collectors. They had thousands of stamps in a variety of huge photo frame like books. The stamps were years old and from a number of generations. There was even one stamp that was worth 250 Euros. I was talked into buying some stamps by my roommate so I chose the most Spanish looking stamps that had bulls on them. The collection had about 15 stamps in it and cost me a grand price of 1 euro 50.

    I thought the stamps were a good idea in the end because I started collecting things from my 18 months abroad and will hopefully make a memory book when I get back home to England. I thought of the idea on my Erasmus in Italy when I was buying postcards from every city or town that we visited and then it just expanded to train tickets, restaurant cards… and now Spanish stamps.

    The market itself was huge. There were hundreds of stalls surrounding lots of streets and plazas and selling all types of things. There were the usual market stalls that you see in England, selling clothes and sunglasses. But the majority of stalls were full of the most beautiful vintage items; jackets, leather bags, jewelry…There were huge crowds of people watching the variety of street musicians.

    I think that one of the best things about the market was that it is located on a street that is booming with antique stores. The antique shops has put all of their best collection onto the street which merged into the market and then if you wanted to know or see more of the collection that they had then you could go inside of the shop. There were also alley ways that led behind shops where there were more collectors. I bought a hip flask as the thought of the orices of alcohol back in Madrid, killed me a little inside.

    We left the market around two o’clock and bought a house mate dinner: a cooked chicken, rice, chips, salad, bread, nuggets, empanada, and croquets… a Spanish interpretation of a Sunday roast.
