    He llegado a mi penúltimo mes en Valencia

    Actualmente, me encuentro mucho más enfocado en la universidad y preparándome para regresar a casa. A pesar del ajetreo, logré terminar mis lecciones universitarias y tareas finales, y pronto tendré mis exámenes finales para todas mis asignaturas. ¡Estoy deseoso por finalmente terminar mis estudios!

    El clima se ha vuelto más cálido, y he aprovechado al máximo visitando la playa más a menudo, ya que las partes principales de Valencia pueden ser demasiado calurosas. Sin embargo, lo más destacado de este mes fue algo completamente inesperado: ¡escalada en roca! Me topé con un curso para principiantes y pensé que sería divertido probarlo.

    Una mañana de domingo, me levanté temprano para tomar un tren a Puzol, un pequeño pueblo cerca de Valencia, donde fui a las peñas de güaita para comenzar la escalada en roca. El instructor proporcionó todo el equipo y me enseñó cómo escalar, rappelar y asegurar al escalador desde el suelo, todo en español. Aunque fue un poco confuso al principio, hubo una demostración visual que me ayudó a entender el concepto.

     

     

     

     

    Después de que superé el miedo inicial, no tenía problemas para escalar, y fue sorprendemente tranquilo allí arriba. La impresionante vista fue definitivamente una ventaja. No tenía idea que existiera un lugar tan hermoso cerca de Valencia, y aparentemente, hay muchos otros lugares para hacer escalada en roca por aquí. Me hizo feliz probar algo que no tendría la oportunidad de hacer en Inglaterra, ¡especialmente con su clima!

     

    I have reached my penultimate month in Valencia!

    Currently, I find myself much more focused on university and preparing to go back home. Despite the busyness, I managed to finish my university lessons and final tasks, and soon I’ll have my final exams for all my modules. I am looking forward to finally finishing my studies!

    The weather has been getting hotter, and I’ve been making the most of it by visiting the beach more often since the main parts of Valencia can be too hot. However, the highlight of this month was something completely unexpected – rock climbing! I stumbled upon a course for beginners and thought it would be fun to give it a try.

    One Sunday morning, I woke up early to catch a train to Puzol, a small town outside Valencia, where I went to the peñas de güaita to start rock climbing. The instructor provided all the equipment and taught me how to climb, abseil, and belay, all in Spanish. Though it was a bit confusing at first, having the visual demonstration helped me grasp the concept.

    Once I got over the initial fear, I realized that I had no problem climbing to the top, and it was surprisingly peaceful up there. The stunning view was definitely a plus. I had no idea such a beautiful place existed so close to Valencia, and apparently, there are many other places to go rock climbing around here. It made me happy to try something that I wouldn’t typically get the chance to do in England, especially not in such great weather!

     

    Unfortunately, my time in Spain is coming to an end, and this will be my last full month here. I’ll be leaving in June after finishing my exams. Despite the busy schedule, I hope to find some other fun things to do before I go!

    Le mois passé a été une combinaison des examens, de divertissement et des grèves ! Je ne sais pas à quel point il a été rapporter en Royaume-Uni mais ici en France il y avait des grèves et manifestations énormes sur les nouveaux reformes de la retraite du gouvernement. Le peuple français est très en colère autour de la décision et cela a amené moi à parler à beaucoup des différentes gens françaises autour de leurs pensées et de lire beaucoup des différents articles dans les journaux. A cause des grèves et manifestations il y avait quelques jours où l’université était fermée et nous avons fait des cours en ligne. Je suis contente que nous avons fait des cours en ligne parce que dans ce dernier mois j’ai eu un bon nombre des devoirs et des contrôles. Cela a fait un bon défi à moi et mon niveau de français de passer ces

    examens écrits et évalués en français. Je peux sentir mon esprit dérouler dans des manières différentes, d’apprendre nouvelles façons de dire des choses et, bien sûr, d’oublier des choses de temps en temps. Récemment, dans un examen, j’ai décrit une scène d’un film et j’ai oublié le mot français pour « sledge » alors à sa place j’ai écrit « un jouet des enfants utilisé pour glisser dans la neige » à chaque fois que j’ai voulu écrire « Luge » ! Il va sans dire… je n’oublierai pas ce mot à nouveau ! J’ai aussi trouvé le temps de m’amuser ce mois, malgré les grèves, les manifestations violents et les examens. Je suis allée à Lyon à se retrouver avec mes colocataires de quand j’ai habité en la Jordanie. Par coïncidence, nous avons toutes eu l’intention d’étudier en France pour notre année d’étudier à l’étranger en même temps et nous avons décidé de se voir à Lyon puisqu’une de ces amies habite là-bas. Elle a nous fait visiter à la ville qui était tellement belle et le soir nous sommes allées à un club de jazz où nous avons écouté à un concert génial et bavardé avec des gens lyonnais.

    This past month has been a combination of exams, fun and strikes! I do not know how much has been reported in the news in the United Kingdom but here in France there has been massive strikes and protests over the government’s new retirement reforms. The French people are very angry about the decision, and this has led to me speaking to lots

    of different French people about their thoughts and reading lots of different articles in the newspapers. The strikes and protests have meant that I have had a few days where the university was closed, and we had class online. I am glad that we still had classes online as in the past month I have had quite a few assignments and tests. It has been a good challenge to me and my level of French to sit these tests that are written and assessed in French. I can feel my mind stretching in different ways, learning new ways to say things and, of course, forgetting things sometimes. In an exam recently, I was describing a scene from a film, and I forgot the French word for “Sledge” so instead I wrote, “a children’s toy used for sliding in the snow” every single time that I wanted to say “Sledge”! Needless to say, … I will not forget that word again. I have also found some time to have some fun this month, despite the strikes, violent protests and exams. I went to Lyon to meet up with my flatmates from when I lived in Jordan. Coincidentally, we all had planned to be in France studying abroad at the same time and decided to meet up in Lyon as one of these friends lives there. She showed us round the city, which was really lovely, and, in the evening, we went out to a jazz club where we listened to some great live music and chatted with some locals!

  • Marianne McCready: Le Printemps à Paris – Springtime in Paris, March 2023

    C’est le début du printemps ici à Paris – les matins deviennent plus lumineux et le soleil se couche plus en plus tard ! Avant que je sois venue à Paris tellement de gens m’a dit comment il est très beau ici pendant le printemps, et je commence à voir ce qu’ils veulent dire. A l’esprit de cette nouvelle aube, j’ai eu un nouveau départ moi-même – j’ai commencé d’aller au cours de forme physique ! C’est un grand nouveau défi pour moi d’essayer de suivre une séance d’entraînement dans ma deuxième langue – j’ai appris beaucoup de vocabulaire nouveau et j’ai même parlé avec l’entraîneuse après un cours du yoga et nous avons eu une conversation au tour des noms des différents muscles dans le corps ! J’apprécie beaucoup apprendre un nouveau don pendant que je passe plus de temps avec des personnes de langue maternelle française. Dans le cadre du travail universitaire il commence d’être plus en plus occupé, j’ai passé mon premier examen en personne dans quatre ans ! Heureusement, il s’est bien passé et je me sens plus confiant a propos du control continu et les examens que j’ai à la fin du mars. Récemment, je me concentrais en essayant de faire des nouveaux rapports dans mes cours, même si j’ai trouvé des amis dans quelques cours, j’ai encore quelques-uns dans lesquels je ne connais personne ! Je sors de ma zone de confort et je fais chaque effort de parler avec les gens, complimenter eux sur leurs chaussures ou demander s’ils savent quelles pages qu’il faut lire pour la semaine prochaine. Je me sens que mon français améliore plus en plus mais je suis maintenant arrivée à l’étape ou j’ai commencé d’oublier des mots en anglais ! Quand les gens me demandent comment dire des choses anglais ou quand je parle à ma famille en Ecosse, je n’arrive pas à rappeler le mot que je veux dire ! Même si de temps en temps cela semble un peu bête, je choisis de voir cela comme un bon signe de mon immersion dans la langue française !

    Sunny Brunch with a New Friend!

    It is the beginnings of springtime here in Paris – the mornings are getting brighter, and the sun sets later and later! Before I came to Paris so many people told me how lovely it is here in spring, and I am beginning to see what they mean. In the spirit of these new beginnings, I have had some new beginnings of my own – I have started going to fitness classes! This is an exciting new challenge for me to try and follow a workout class in my second language – I have learned lots of new vocabulary and even spoke with the teacher after a yoga session and we had a conversation about the names of different muscles in the body! I am enjoying learning a new skill while spending more time with native speakers. Things are really starting to get busy in terms of university work, I sat my first in person exam in four years! Thankfully, it went well and I feel more confident about the coursework and exams that I have due at the end of March. I have been really focused recently on trying to make new connections in my classes, while I have found friends in a few classes, I still have a few where I don’t know anyone in them! I have been putting myself out of my comfort zone and making every effort to talk to people, compliment their shoes or ask if they know what pages we have to read for next week. I feel my French is getting better and better, but I have got to the stage now where I have begun to forget words in English! When people ask me how to say things in English or when I am speaking to family back home sometimes, I just can’t remember the word I want to say! While this sometimes makes me sound quite silly, I am choosing to look at it as a good sign of my immersion in the French Language!

  • Marianne McCready: Ici à Paris ! – January 2023

    Je suis très heureuse de vous informer que je suis arrivée à Paris ! J’ai passé mes premières deux semaines en je me repérais dans cette grande ville. C’est incroyable de sentir plus en plus a l’aise en parler français, en lire des pancartes et comprendre des directions quand je les demande ! Je suis arrivée une semaine en avance de la rentrée et j’ai passé ce temps en apprendre à connaitre mon nouveau quartier et en acheter des essentiels pour mon nouvel appartement ! Cependant, je dois admettre que le système universitaire en France a été très difficile à comprendre. Je suis allée au parcours d’intégration et le système n’été pas plus clair à comprendre et je n’ai pas compris ce que j’ai dû faire ! Ensuite, j’ai été informée qu’il y aurait un rendez-vous le jeudi pour tout expliquer mais hélas… il y avait une grève le jeudi et le rendez-vous a été annulé ! Ils nous ont envoyé un courriel avec un lien pour nous nous inscrire au cours mais comme une étudiante étrangère je ne suis pas dans leur système en ligne et je n’ai pu pas m’inscrire. Alors, le vendredi je suis allée à la Sorbonne en personne pour trouver ma coordinatrice pour expliquer ma situation. C’était une expérience intimidante qui fallait frapper au plusieurs portes différentes et expliquer ma situation unique et demander pour l’aide (en français). Heureusement, chaque personne était très gentille et faisait tout qu’elle pouvait à m’aider trouver la personne correcte. Quand j’ai trouvé la coordinatrice, elle a dissipé mes soucis et m’a donné des instructions claires en comment m’inscrire au mes cours.
    Assister aux cours cette semaine a été une expérience nouvelle et intéressante pour moi. Je ne suis pas encore sûre de ce que je vais étudier définitivement, mais je me suis intéressée par la littérature du XVIIème et XVIIIème siècles, le journalisme et du cinéma français. Je fais des efforts à parler avec mes camarades de classe français et de devenir ami avec eux. Avec un peu de chance, avant que je soumette mon prochain rapport j’aurais fait des amis avec des Français !

    I am very happy to report that I have arrived in Paris! I have spent these first two weeks finding my feet in this big city. It is amazing to feel myself becoming more at ease in speaking French, in reading signs and understanding directions when I ask for them! I arrived a week before classes started and I spent that time getting to know my new neighbourhood and stocking up on essentials for my new flat! However, I must admit that it has been very difficult trying to understand the French university system. I went to the orientation meeting and was still not any clearer on what I had to do! I was then told that there was to be a meeting on Thursday to explain it all but alas… there was a strike on Thursday and the meeting was cancelled! We were sent an email with a link so we could register online but as an external student I do not exist on their online system and was unable to register. So, on Friday I went in person to the Sorbonne to find the coordinator so I could explain my situation. This was a daunting experience as it required knocking on many different doors and explaining my unique situation and asking for help (in French). Thankfully, everyone was so kind and did everything they could to help me find the right person to speak to. When I found the coordinator, she assuaged my worries and gave me clear instructions on how to register for my classes.
    Attending classes this week has been a new and interesting experience for me. I am still not quite sure what I will end up studying in the end, but I have been interested in 17th and 18th century literature, journalism and French cinema. I am making an effort to speak to my French classmates and befriend them. Hopefully, by the time I submit my next report I will have made some new French friends!

  • Case Study: Mazin Weber – Madrid 2021/22

    Living in Madrid has been the largest stepping stone in my life. To move by myself to a different country where I didn’t know anybody was a huge moment in my life as it threw me right out of my comfort zone. However, it is without a single doubt I can say that it has also been the best year of my life. From studying to making friends, meeting the love of my life and travelling around the peninsula I have truly immersed myself into the ‘vida madrileña’ and Spanish culture in general.

    I would like to extend an immense amount of gratitude to the John Speak Language Trust for helping fund my studies abroad, it is with their payments that I was able to allocate more of my money into things such as cultural immersion and travelling, which undoubtedly formed the amazing experience I had in Madrid.

    Studying at the Complutense, I was truly immersed into the Spanish lifestyle as I was in normal Spanish classes, full of local students where all classes were taught in pure Spanish. Despite being a difficult experience at the start, it massively helped me to improve my Spanish language skills, and I can say with full confidence that I have drastically improved my Spanish since I came to Madrid in September. Being surrounded by natives and constantly being forced to speak Spanish in situations has helped me immensely in improving my Spanish, as it has taught me to speak more authentic and less like a textbook.

    I will never forget this year in Madrid, the memories I made with some of the most amazing people I met will forever be immortal in my mind and heart. My year was full of travel and adventure, some of my favourite things was taking trips with my girlfriend to various towns close to the capital: such as Aranjuez, Segovia and Toledo, with even trips to Valencia and Lisbon included. Despite Covid restrictions, it did not permit the amount of enjoyment and enrichment I experienced in Madrid, with every weekend offering a new adventure for me and my friends.

    In the future, I would love to return to Spain, especially Madrid and stay longer than just an academic year. It has taught me so many lessons, given me experiences and emotions I have never had before and given me gifts I never thought I would be lucky enough to receive. Therefore, I thoroughly recommend studying abroad to anyone who wishes to undertake it in the future, and in particular studying in Spain, the heart of the Mediterranean.

  • Réunion lé la ! Réunion is Here!

    Réunion lé la! Réunion is here! For those who are unaware that was Réunionais Creole. Apart from French, Réunion Island also has another language spoken throughout the Island which one calls Creole. Creole has a proximity to French, and one can find different versions of Creole spoken in the Antilles, Mauritius and other French Overseas Territories. It would be quite simplistic of me to call Creole a variation of French, particularly as it takes on its own body and history, nevertheless it’s foundations do derive from the French language and France’s colonial history is also intertwined with the birth of Creole. I remember I was asked about the utility of learning creole. WhRéunion lé la! Réunion is here! For those who are unaware that was Réunionais Creole. Apart from French, Réunion Island also has another language spoken throughout the Island which one calls Creole. Creole has a proximity to French, and one can find different versions of Creole spoken in that is the point of learning a language that is so specific to one place? My answer was about the human need to relate. We all respond better to people we can relate to. I think it’s crucial, in terms of building long-lasting relationships through this exchange that one sees the effort made to be relatable. I find that people in general really appreciate the little things.

    On the topic of Creole culture, I’ve learned how to cook two cultural dishes! The first cultural dish I made is called Rougail Saucisse. It’s a dish that consists of sausages and tomato sauce and the second dish is called Cari Poulet, which is a chicken curry. Both dishes are usually served with lentils and piment (a spicy accompagnement – usually consists of onions and peppers). I followed recipes online and cooked it for my Réunionnais friends and they were pretty impressed! I can’t wait to cook it for my family and friends back home.

    They call Réunion Island a ‘melting pot of culture’ and for the first time ever I had the opportunity to experience the festival of Diwali and it was absolutely STUNNING. The lights, the floats, the music, the food, the ambience. It was truly amazing. Us ERASMUS students along with local students went to a city called Saint-Andre which has a high population of Tamil people, and hence Saint-Andre had the biggest Diwali celebration on the whole of the island. It was something truly breathtaking, truly magnificent. I had witnessed the biggest firework display I have ever seen in my life and I’m so glad that I witnessed it here.

    The world’s most active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, erupted for 5th time this year, but sadly I wasn’t able to go. The photos my friends took have been absolutely incredible. I’ve made more friends with Réunionais students and I couldn’t have asked to meet better people honestly. Their kindness and openness is appreciated so much! The cultural exchange has been very rewarding. I’m very sad though, I feel like time is running out. We’ve been having exams for a while now and the novelty of being a new international student has worn off! I’m not ready for this year abroad to end. Nonetheless, I’m surrounded by amazing people, learning an amazing language and making amazing memories. I’ll be eternally grateful for this experience. 

    Réunion lé la ! (La Réunion est là !) Pour ceux qui ne savent pas cela est le créole Réunionnais. Hormis du français, la Réunion possède également une autre langue parlée dans toute l’île que l’on appelle le créole. Le créole est proche du français, et on peut trouver différentes versions du créole parlé aux Antilles, à Maurice et dans d’autres territoires français d’outre-mer. Il serait simpliste de ma part d’appeler le créole une variante du français, d’autant plus qu’il prend en charge son propre corps et son histoire, mais qu’il n’en demeure pas moins que ses fondements proviennent de la langue française et que l’histoire coloniale de la France est également entrelacée avec la naissance du créole. Je me souviens qu’on m’a interrogé sur l’utilité d’apprendre le créole. Qu’est-ce que l’intérêt d’apprendre une langue si spécifique à un lieu ? Ma réponse est le besoin humain d’établir des relations. Nous répondons mieux aux gens auxquels nous pouvons nous identifier. Je pense qu’il est crucial, en termes de construction de relations durables à travers cet échange, que l’on voit l’effort fait pour être fiable. Je trouve que les gens en général apprécient vraiment les petites détails.

     

    Sur le thème de la culture créole, j’ai appris à cuisiner deux plats culturels ! Le premier plat culturel que j’ai fait s’appelle Rougail Saucisse. C’est un plat composé de saucisses et de sauce tomate et le deuxième plat s’appelle Cari Poulet, qui est un curry de poulet. Les deux plats sont généralement servis avec des lentilles et du piment (un accompagnement épicé – généralement composé d’oignons et de poivrons). J’ai suivi des recettes en ligne et je les ai préparées pour mes amis Réunionnais et ils ont été très impressionnés ! J’ai hâte de le cuisiner pour ma famille et mes amis à la maison.

     

    Ils appellent La Réunion un ” melting-pot de culture ” et pour la première fois, j’ai eu l’occasion de voir le festival de Diwali et c’était absolument INCROYABLE. Les lumières, les chars, la musique, la nourriture, l’ambiance. C’était vraiment incroyable. Nous, les étudiants ERASMUS et les étudiants locaux, nous sommes allés dans une ville appelée Saint-André qui a une forte population tamoule, et donc, Saint-André a la plus grande fête Diwali de l’île. C’était quelque chose de vraiment époustouflant, vraiment magnifique. J’ai vu le plus grand feu d’artifice que j’aie jamais vu dans ma vie et je suis très contente d’avoir été témoin de cela ici.

     

     

    Le plus actif volcan du monde, le Piton de la Fournaise, a explosé pour la cinquième fois cette année, mais malheureusement je n’ai pas pu y aller. Les photos que mes amis ont prises ont été absolument incroyables. Je me suis fait plus d’amis avec des étudiants Réunionnais et je n’aurais pas pu demander à rencontrer de meilleures personnes. Leur gentillesse et leur ouverture d’esprit sont très appréciées ! L’échange culturel a été très enrichissant. Mais je suis très triste, j’ai l’impression que le temps presse. Nous avons des examens depuis un moment maintenant et la nouveauté d’être une nouvelle étudiante internationale s’est estompée ! Je ne suis pas prêt pour la fin de cette année à l’étranger. Néanmoins, je suis entouré de gens extraordinaires, j’apprends une langue incroyable et je me fais des souvenirs incroyables. Je serai éternellement reconnaissante pour cette expérience.

     

  • « La méthodologie française » : Phoebe Gittins, Paris, France, November 2019

    Bonjour !
    Mes premiers cours à Sciences Po concernaient la méthodologie… mais on s’est demandé, est-il nécessaire d’apprendre encore la méthodologie d’une dissertation, d’une fiche de lecture ou même d’une présentation orale ? Évidemment, on l’a fait pendant longtemps au collège ou certainement au lycée au Royaume-Uni ? La réponse, ABSOLUEMENT. La raison pour laquelle est simple, dans les universités françaises, particulièrement dans les grandes écoles comme Sciences Po, la méthodologie, c’est-à-dire le style obligatoire du travail, est très différente.

    Notre prof était sympathique et serviable, en nous donnant la « formule » française qui pourrait être manipulée pour chaque sujet :

    L’introduction
    I. A. a. b. c, B. a. b. c, C. a. b. c ;
    II. A. a. b. c, B. a. b. c, C. a. b. c ;
    III. A. a. b. c, B. a. b. c, C. a. b. c.

    La conclusion
    On voit que la formule est structurée et équilibrée, il faut organiser toutes les parties et sous-parties afin qu’elles puissent marcher dans cette formule (même s’il y aura seulement deux grandes parties et deux sous-parties.) À mon avis, il est difficile de comprendre comment on utilisera cette structure dans tous les sujets, les arguments, les dissertations et les exposés.

    L’autre point d’importance et celui de la problématique, qui est la colonne vertébrale du travail. La problématique, une idée qui fait le lien entre le titre et le travail, est étrangère aux étrangers. Alors, les cours de méthodologie étaient utiles pour pratiquer la façon de trouver et décortiquer une problématique. Par exemple, on a fait un projet sur les monuments, l’art et leurs restaurations à Paris, ce qui nous a conduit à visiter L’Église de Saint-Germain et Le Louvre. J’ai pensé que c’était une opportunité formidable d’apprendre la méthodologie mais en utilisant les vraies études de cas alors qu’on fasse un peu de tourisme au même temps !

    Ce qui m’intéresse le plus est la nécessité d’une ouverture dans la conclusion. Une ouverture pourrait être un nouvel argument, un nouveau point de vue, mais la distinction est qu’on peut inclure, même utiliser, les actualités pour ce point-là. J’aime le fait qu’on peut revenir à l’origine du titre ou question, et offrir quelque chose d’intéressant et d’utile concrètement dans le monde réel. C’est la raison pour laquelle j’ai commencé d’acheter Le Parisien deux ou trois fois par semaine pour lire dans le métro, afin que je puisse rester au courant avec les idées et les arguments auxquels s’intéressent les français – particulièrement, mes profs qui vont corriger mon travail.

    Je pense que l’accent mis sur les actualités dans toutes mes matières à Sciences Po est formidable. On a reçu une conférence par Bruno Patino (qui travaille pour Le Monde) sur les bases des actualités françaises et comment on pourrait les naviguer. D’ailleurs, je parle plus avec les étudiants français parce que je sais davantage sur leur pays et leurs actualités.

    My first lessons at Sciences Po were about methodology… but we asked ourselves, is it necessary to learn about how to write an essay, a book review, or even how to do an oral presentation again? Obviously, we studied how to do that for a long time at high school or if not, certainly during sixth form back in the United Kingdom? The answer- ABSOLUTELY. The reason is simple, at French universities, particularly at “grandes écoles” like Sciences Po, the methodology, as in the necessary style for our work, is very different.
    Our teacher was lovely and helpful, and gave to us the French “formula” which could be manipulated for each subject:
    Introduction
    I. A. a. b. c, B. a. b. c, C. a. b. c;
    II. A. a. b. c, B. a. b. c, C. a. b. c;
    III. A. a. b. c, B. a. b. c, C. a. b. c.

    Conclusion
    We can see here that the formula is very structured, and each section is equally weighted, it is necessary to organise each section and subsection so that they work in this formula (even if that means there will only be two sections and two subsections.) In my opinion, it is difficult to see how we will use this structure in all subjects, arguments, essays and oral presentations.

    The other important point is the “problématique”, which is the spine of the piece of work. The “problématique”, an idea which links the title and the piece of work itself, is quite foreign to foreigners. Therefore, the methodology lessons were useful to practise the way to find and unpick a “problématique”. For example, we did a project on monuments, art and the restoration of these pieces in Paris, which drove us to visit the Church of Saint-Germain and the Louvre. I thought it was a brilliant opportunity to learn the methodology but by using true case studies so that we could do a bit of tourism at the same time!

    What interested me the most was the need for an “ouverture” in the conclusion. An “ouverture” could be a new argument, a new point of view, but the difference is that we can include, or even utilise current affairs for this particular point. I like the fact that we can go back to the origin of the title or question and offer something interesting and useful in practice in the real world. It is the reason why I started to buy Le Parisien two or three times a week to read on the metro, so that I can stay up to date with the ideas and arguments that interest the French people- especially the teachers who will be marking my work.

    I think the emphasis on current affairs in all my subjects at Sciences Po is incredible. There was a conference led by Bruno Patino (who works for Le Monde) on the basics of French current affairs and how we can navigate them. Moreover, I talk to more French students because I know more about their country and news.

    中国的城市规划

    搬到了中国之后，我第一次注意到中国的城市规划。我之所以对这个话题有浓厚的兴趣，是因为我认为一个城市的结构反映了一个国家的政治制度和社会,并且会影响到城市居民的生活方式和条件。尤其是在中国这个人口众多的国家，中国政府如何设计居民的生活环境一定非常重要。
    为了疏解北京现有的问题 – 比如堵车严重，地铁拥挤，供水紧缺 – 中国的政府打算在河北省设立新的大城市叫雄安。这个新区代表了中国城市发展的新模式。 习近平希望，在2030年之前，雄安能成为他的”中国梦”的象征之一。雄安的市政府会把可持续发展放在第一位：绿空间将占比70%以上，区森林覆盖率将达到40%以上。毫无疑问，中国总是与空气污染的问题和工业化联系起来，所以这样的绿色政策让我对中国的未来十分乐观。再者，中国政府希望雄安会成为中国的科技枢纽，比如雄安的市政府已经与百度商定了一个无人驾驶的项目，这证明了未来的中国城市会颇具特色。
    虽然北京是个很大的城市，但人们去不同的城区都挺方便，因为北京的公共交通系统很发达。而且，北京的共享单车随处可见，你在任何地方都可以方便地骑上自行车，让你有自由自在的感觉。然而，北京还面临不少的问题，对我而言最重要的问题是北京的人口密度过高。最近二十年来，很多从农村来的人为了谋生而搬到北京。如果你乘坐地铁，你就可以看得出来，距离北京成为一个真正美好的城市的那一天，北京市政府还有一段路要走。

    After moving to China was the first time I started to pay attention to Chinese urban planning. The reason I have a deep interest in this topic is because I believe the structure of a city reflects a country’s political system and society, and it also influences the lifestyles and conditions of the city’s residents. In particular, in a country like China which has a massive population, the way the Chinese government designs the living environment for its residents is very important.
    To alleviate the current problems of Beijing – such as extreme congestion, overcrowded subways and water shortages – the Chinese government is planning on building a new big city in Hebei Province called Xiong’an. This new district represents the new style of Chinese urban development. Xi Jinping hopes that before 2030, Xiong’an will become one of the emblems of his so-called ‘Chinese dream’. The city government of Xiong’an is making sustainable development one of its priorities: green spaces will make 70% of the city, and forests will cover up to over 40%. With no doubt, China is always associated with air pollution and industrialisation, so this type of green policy makes me feel very optimistic about China’s future. Moreover, the Chinese government hopes that Xiong’an will become the technology hub of China. For example, the city government of Xiong’an has already agreed with Baidu to run a driverless vehicle project, which shows that the China of the future will be very distinctive.
    Although Beijing is an enormous city, going to different parts of the city is pretty convenient, as Beijing’s public transport system is very advanced. Also, you can find Beijing’s public bikes almost everywhere. Wherever you are, you can conveniently ride a bicycle to your next destination, which makes you feel very free. However, Beijing is still facing many different problems. In my opinion, the most significant problem is Beijing’s overpopulation. In the most recent 20 years, lots of people from the countryside have moved to Beijing to make a living.

    If you ride the subway, you can clearly see that Beijing’s city government still has a long way to go before Beijing can truly become a wonderful city.

    由于我在大学只要上早上的课，因此我来北京以后决定我要利用我的空闲时间来增长我对在中国公司经营方式的知识，而且发展未来的事业机会。因此，我上个月开始在一个跨国公关公司工作。我们组的客户是一个庞大的中国科技公司，这家公司希望在国外做更多生意，所以他们要提高他们的公共名声。我现在的责任包括做关于科技领域的研究，翻译和编辑任务。在办公室，百分之九十的员工是中国人，我是唯一的外国实习生！于是，每天很多人拜托我改善他们用英文写的文件，这样让我更好了解英语和汉语有什么区别。这份实习也给我难得机会学到我在大学一定不会学到的事。比方说，我开始做实习以后才发现中国企业的科技这么发达，他们的人工智能和无人驾驶的技术是世界上最厉害之一。这份实习给我许多机会练习我的中文。我做研究的时候需要看有些中文材料，比如报纸文章和报告，以便补充英文材料，这样就能完全理解我研究的题目。并且，虽然我在一个跨国公司做实习，但是一般来说我会用中文跟我的同事沟通。我们其他的实习生吃午餐的时候会讨论各种各样的话题，让更好了解到中国学生的生活是怎么样。
    上个星期是我参加了我们公司的圣诞晚会。我们吃了一顿美味的晚餐之后，每个组要给大家表演不同的节目。我参与了两个表演，第一个是我跟我的同事唱圣诞歌，第二个是一个喜剧，我的人物是三国演义的关羽。他是一个非常威猛的人物，不太适合我的个性！
    总而言之，做这份实习是一个很好的机会体验中国上班族的生活，并且帮我考虑我毕业以后要做什么工作，怎么找一个与中国有关系的工作。

    Work Christmas Party with my fellow interns

    ENGLISH:

    As I only have morning classes at university, after arriving in Beijing I decided I wanted to make the most of my free time to improve my knowledge of companies operating in China, as well to advance my future job opportunities. Therefore, last month I started to work at an international PR company. My team’s client is a very big Chinese technology company. As this company wants to do more business abroad, they also want to improve their public reputation. My current responsibilities include doing research into the field of technology, translation and editing tasks. In the office, 90% of the staff are Chinese and I am the only foreign intern! Consequently, everyday lots of people ask for my help to improve the language of their English documents. This has helped me to better understand the differences between Chinese and English. This internship has also been me a valuable opportunity to learn things I would never learn at university. For example, it was only after starting my internship that I realised how advanced the technology of Chinese companies has become. These companies are some of the world leading companies in the fields of artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles. This internship has also given me lots of opportunities to practise my Chinese. When I am doing research, I need to use Chinese language materials, such as newspaper articles and reports, to supplement English language materials and allow me to fully understand the topic that I am researching. Furthermore, although I am interning at an international company, I usually use Chinese to communicate with my colleagues. When I go to eat lunch with my fellow interns, we will talk about a wide variety of topics, which helps me to better understand the lives of Chinese students.
    Last week, I attended my work’s Christmas party. After eating a delicious dinner, each team had to put on a different performance for everyone. I participated in two different performances: in the first I sang a Christmas song with one of my colleagues and the second was a play. My character was Guan Yu, from the Chinese classic novel ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’. He is a very ferocious character, which didn’t really suit my personality!
    Overall, this internship is a great opportunity to experience the life of an office worker in China, and help me to consider what I want to do after I graduate, in particular how I can find a job related to China.

    为了庆祝中华人民共和国的成立，每年的10月1日是中国的国庆节。政府制定每个人能放七天的假，所以这个假日也叫 “金周”. 那个星期安排的活动很多，很多人也趁着假期在国内和国内的地方去旅行。我跟我的同学一起考虑我们要去什么地方的时候，很多中国人警告我们中国所有的名胜古迹一定会太拥挤，所有的旅馆和火车票很久已经订满了，对一个西方人而言真受不了！因此，为了避免中国游客的群众，我们决定去一个避暑的目的地，那就是青岛。青岛与北京在很多方面截然不同. 比如说，青岛的气氛比较轻松，哪里的空气质量也比较好! 青岛也是一个沿海的城市，它在中国以山和海为著名。我们一到青岛就特别享受在海边呼吸新鲜的空气，看着当地人在户外做运动。这是一个在北京千万不会发生的一件事儿！
    我们第一天在青岛的老城去逛逛，欣赏青岛的德式建筑。由于青岛从1891年到1949年，青岛被德国殖民，因此青岛大大受到了德国的影响。晚上的时候，我们去了一个饭馆吃青岛远近著名的海鲜、我们第二天决定去爬山，我们爬到山顶可以鸟瞰全城，那里的风景很棒！
    去青岛以后，我们也去了爬泰山。你一提到泰山就会让人们想起来中国古老的历史。这是因为很多皇帝爬过泰山祭祀。所以，现在很多中国人感觉爬泰山真有意义，我们去爬的那天真是人山人海！我回到北京之后跟我的中国朋友分享我在泰山的经历他们一点都不吃惊。
    总而言之，

    在中国去旅行是个很难得的机会跟当地人说话好好练习我的中文，也能接近中国的文化。

    Travelling in China
    In order to celebrate the founding of the People’s Republic of China, every year on October 1st marks China’s National Day. The government lets every person have 7 days of holiday, so this holiday is also called ‘Golden Week’. There are lots of activities organised for this week and lots of people make the most of the holiday to go travelling to places in China and abroad. When I was thinking about where to go travelling with my classmates, lots of Chinese people warned us that all the main tourist attractions in China would be too busy. Also, all the hotels and train tickets would be booked out ages in advance – it would be truly unbearable for a Westerner! So, in order to avoid the crowds of Chinese tourists, we decided to visit somewhere that is usually a summer destination – Qingdao. In many aspects, Beijing and Qingdao are completely different. For example, the atmosphere in Qingdao is a lot more relaxed and the air quality is better! Qingdao is also a coastal city and is famous throughout China for its sea and mountains. When we first arrived in Qingdao, we particularly enjoyed breathing the fresh air by the sea and watching locals exercising outside. This is something that people would never do in Beijing!
    On our first day in Qingdao, we wandered around the old city and enjoyed the German style architecture of the city. Because Qingdao was a German colony between 1891 and 1949, the city has been greatly influenced by Germany. In the evening, we went to a restaurant to try out Qingdao’s famous seafood. On our second day we decided to go climb a mountain. When we climbed to the top we had a bird’s eye view of the city – the view was amazing!
    After visiting Qingdao, we also went to climb Mount Tai. When you mention Mount Tai, it immediately makes people think of China’s ancient history.

    This is because a lot of emperors climbed Mount Tai to make sacrifices to the gods. Therefore, nowadays lots of Chinese people feel that climbing Mount Tai is of great significance. The day we went to climb there were seas of people! When I returned to Beijing and shared my experience with my Chinese friends they weren’t surprised at all.

    Overall, going travelling in China was an invaluable opportunity to speak with locals and practise my Chinese and get closer to Chinese culture.
