  • Case Study: Max Jenkins – Valencia 2023

    Firstly, I would like to thank the John Speak Trust for helping finance my study abroad in Valencia. This really helped further fund different activities and nights out that I would not have originally been able to afford!

    I was really spoiled during the five months I was in Valencia. I think that before my arrival and the stress of planning my trip, I hadn’t truly considered the effect of what this journey would have on me. It is safe to say that it isn’t anything that I will ever regret or want to change.


    Arriving in Valencia in January, I was welcomed to lovely warm weather, not so typical of a British winter! I jumped straight into exploring the city and starting University. Looking back, it is surprising how fast it took for me to adapt to the daily life of Spain. I suppose I had to in some ways though, as the majority of shops all close for a break in the middle of the day!

    However, this did not come without its challenges. While I actually found quite a few similarities between my University in Spain and England, there was a very large learning curve in that I was learning everything in Spanish! Working in classes with the majority of Spanish students was definitely a challenging experience, but it put me in a position where not only did I have to speak Spanish, but I was also listening to Spanish all the time.

    That opportunity to be immersed in Spain’s culture and be able to speak Spanish on a daily basis is something that has been extremely useful in the advancement of my Spanish speaking, especially in terms of my pronunciation and general fluency. These advancements obviously came with plenty of nervousness and lots of mistakes, but this is very normal!

    My time abroad has helped me become more comfortable with making mistakes.

    I am very grateful to have had this opportunity! Not only did I get to come study abroad, but I could afford to go out more often and try new things! Jiu Jitsu and Rock Climbing are two examples of activities that I tried for the first time while abroad, and they were fun! It was definitely a struggle being taught how to learn certain techniques in Spanish, but I think it immensely aided my comprehension. Similarly with food, I was able to try many different examples of local dishes, some of which include paella, arroces melozos, and a type of dried and smoked octopus dish often served at coastal seaside towns in the Valencia region.


    In conclusion, the five months during my time in Valencia allowed me to greatly develop my Spanish speaking.

    Thanks to the trust helping me gain some further financial freedom, I was able to make the most out of my time abroad by going out and trying different, new activities and meeting new people!

  • Max Jenkins ¡Adios Valencia! | Goodbye Valencia!

    Lamentablemente, ha llovido mucho durante Junio en Valencia, lo cual ha sido un cambio bastante drástico respecto al clima que he experimentado hasta ahora. Casi es triste pensar que me voy este mes, especialmente considerando lo agradable que ha sido mi estancia aquí.

     

     

    Reflexionando sobre mi experiencia de estudiar en el extranjero en Valencia, puedo afirmar con confianza que ha sido un viaje realmente transformador. A lo largo de cinco meses, me sumergí en diversas asignaturas en la Universidad de Valencia, incluyendo español para los negocios, comportamiento del consumidor, marketing y técnicas cuantitativas. Aunque aún estoy esperando las calificaciones finales de mis exámenes, me complace compartir que aprobé exitosamente mi clase de español para los negocios. Además, tomé un curso de español nivel B2, en el cual me destacé con una nota notable. Este feedback positivo demuestra el progreso significativo que he logrado durante mi tiempo aquí.

     

     

     

     

     

    La oportunidad de estar completamente inmerso en la vibrante cultura de España ha contribuido sin duda a mis habilidades lingüísticas. Participar en conversaciones y relaciones diarias con los lugareños me ha permitido sostener discusiones más matizadas y complejas. También he notado una mejora significativa en mi capacidad para formular preguntas y hablar con mayor confianza. Estar rodeado del idioma español a diario ha sido invaluable en mi proceso de aprendizaje.

    Estoy inmensamente agradecido a la Fundación John Speak por proporcionarme una beca que me permitió aprovechar al máximo la experiencia de estudiar en el extranjero. El apoyo financiero no solo facilitó mis objetivos académicos, sino que también me permitió participar en actividades extracurriculares que de otro modo hubieran estado fuera de mi alcance. Gracias a la beca, tuve la oportunidad de explorar nuevos intereses, como el jiu-jitsu y la escalada en roca, las cuales han sido experiencias increíblemente enriquecedoras.

     

     

     

     

     

    Si bien los logros académicos y el crecimiento personal han sido un enfoque principal, sería descuidado no mencionar algunos de los aspectos destacados que hicieron mi tiempo en Valencia realmente especial. La gastronomía, por ejemplo, ha sido un delicioso viaje de sabores. Desde las deliciosas paellas hasta los arroces melosos, un plato tradicional valenciano, he disfrutado probando algunos de los platos más famosos de la región, lo cual ha ayudado a adentrarme en la rica herencia gastronómica de Valencia.

     

     

     

     

    Además, el festival anual de la ciudad, Las Fallas, dejó una impresión duradera en mí. A pesar de las multitudes bulliciosas que acompañaban al evento, la celebración única, que hace que la población de Valencia se multiplique por más de tres veces, ofreció una experiencia cautivadora. Presenciar las Fallas intrincadas y elaboradas, junto con los deslumbrantes espectáculos de fuegos artificiales, fue realmente impresionante.

     

     

     

     

     

    A pesar del paisaje urbano de Valencia, Había muchos parques y jardines que realmente aprecié mucho. El Jardín del Turia, que se extiende por toda la ciudad, proporcionó un refugio tranquilo en comparación con el resto de Valencia. También fue agradable utilizar el sendero para correr en el jardín, ya que normalmente no me gusta correr en las calles y detenerme por el tráfico.

     

    En general, he encontrado que Valencia es una ciudad maravillosa, con una cultura vibrante y experiencias que valoraré por el resto de mi vida. Estoy inmensamente agradecido por la oportunidad de haber estudiado y vivido aquí, y me alegra partir con habilidades lingüísticas mejoradas, nuevas habilidades y recuerdos.

    Unfortunately, June in Valencia has been marked by a significant amount of rain, which has been quite a change from the weather I have experienced so far. It’s almost sad to think that I am leaving this month, especially considering the enjoyable time I have had here.

     

    Reflecting on my study abroad experience in Valencia, I can confidently say that it has been a truly transformative journey. Over the course of five months, I immersed myself in various subjects at the University of Valencia, including Spanish for business, consumer behaviour, marketing, and quantitative techniques. While I am still awaiting the final grades for my exams, I am pleased to share that I successfully passed my Spanish for business class. Additionally, I took a B2-level Spanish course, in which I excelled with an outstanding grade. This positive feedback demonstrates the significant progress I have made during my time here.

     

    The opportunity to be fully immersed in Spain’s vibrant culture has undoubtedly contributed to my language skills. Engaging in daily conversations and interactions with locals has allowed me to hold more nuanced and complex discussions. I have also noticed a significant improvement in my ability to formulate questions and speak with greater confidence. Being surrounded by the Spanish language on a daily basis has been invaluable in my language-learning journey.

     

     

     

     

     

    I am immensely grateful to the John Speak Trust for providing me with a scholarship that enabled me to fully embrace the study abroad experience. The financial support not only facilitated my academic pursuits but also allowed me to engage in extracurricular activities that would have otherwise been beyond my reach. Thanks to the scholarship, I had the opportunity to explore new interests, such as Jiu-Jitsu and rock climbing, which have been incredibly rewarding experiences.

     

     

     

     

    While academic achievements and personal growth have been a major focus, it would be remiss not to mention some of the highlights that made my time in Valencia truly special. The cuisine, for instance, has been a delightful journey of flavours. From delicious paellas to arrozes melozos, a traditional Valencian rice dish, I have enjoyed trying some of the region’s most famous dishes. Which has helped to provide a window into the rich gastronomic heritage of Valencia.

     

     

     

     

    Additionally, the city’s annual festival, Las Fallas, left a lasting impression on me. Despite the bustling crowds that accompanied the event, the unique celebration, which sees the population of Valencia multiply by more than three times, offered a captivating experience. Witnessing the intricate and elaborate Fallas, along with the mesmerizing fireworks displays, was truly awe-inspiring.

     

     

     

    Amidst the urban landscape of Valencia, I really appreciated the city’s parks and gardens. The Turia Garden, which stretches throughout the city, provided a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. It was also nice to use the running path that runs along the garden, as I typically have an aversion to running in cities because I don’t like running on streets and having to stop for traffic.

    Overall, I have found Valencia to be a really wonderful city, with a vibrant culture, and experiences that I will value for the rest of my life. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to have studied and lived here and am glad to be leaving with improved language skills, new skills, and memories.

     

  • Mayo – ¡Mi penultimo mes en Valencia! | May – My penultimate month in Valencia!

    He llegado a mi penúltimo mes en Valencia

    Actualmente, me encuentro mucho más enfocado en la universidad y preparándome para regresar a casa. A pesar del ajetreo, logré terminar mis lecciones universitarias y tareas finales, y pronto tendré mis exámenes finales para todas mis asignaturas. ¡Estoy deseoso por finalmente terminar mis estudios!

    El clima se ha vuelto más cálido, y he aprovechado al máximo visitando la playa más a menudo, ya que las partes principales de Valencia pueden ser demasiado calurosas. Sin embargo, lo más destacado de este mes fue algo completamente inesperado: ¡escalada en roca! Me topé con un curso para principiantes y pensé que sería divertido probarlo.

    Una mañana de domingo, me levanté temprano para tomar un tren a Puzol, un pequeño pueblo cerca de Valencia, donde fui a las peñas de güaita para comenzar la escalada en roca. El instructor proporcionó todo el equipo y me enseñó cómo escalar, rappelar y asegurar al escalador desde el suelo, todo en español. Aunque fue un poco confuso al principio, hubo una demostración visual que me ayudó a entender el concepto.

     

     

     

     

    Después de que superé el miedo inicial, no tenía problemas para escalar, y fue sorprendemente tranquilo allí arriba. La impresionante vista fue definitivamente una ventaja. No tenía idea que existiera un lugar tan hermoso cerca de Valencia, y aparentemente, hay muchos otros lugares para hacer escalada en roca por aquí. Me hizo feliz probar algo que no tendría la oportunidad de hacer en Inglaterra, ¡especialmente con su clima!

     

    I have reached my penultimate month in Valencia!

    Currently, I find myself much more focused on university and preparing to go back home. Despite the busyness, I managed to finish my university lessons and final tasks, and soon I’ll have my final exams for all my modules. I am looking forward to finally finishing my studies!

    The weather has been getting hotter, and I’ve been making the most of it by visiting the beach more often since the main parts of Valencia can be too hot. However, the highlight of this month was something completely unexpected – rock climbing! I stumbled upon a course for beginners and thought it would be fun to give it a try.

    One Sunday morning, I woke up early to catch a train to Puzol, a small town outside Valencia, where I went to the peñas de güaita to start rock climbing. The instructor provided all the equipment and taught me how to climb, abseil, and belay, all in Spanish. Though it was a bit confusing at first, having the visual demonstration helped me grasp the concept.

    Once I got over the initial fear, I realized that I had no problem climbing to the top, and it was surprisingly peaceful up there. The stunning view was definitely a plus. I had no idea such a beautiful place existed so close to Valencia, and apparently, there are many other places to go rock climbing around here. It made me happy to try something that I wouldn’t typically get the chance to do in England, especially not in such great weather!

     

    Unfortunately, my time in Spain is coming to an end, and this will be my last full month here. I’ll be leaving in June after finishing my exams. Despite the busy schedule, I hope to find some other fun things to do before I go!

  • Max Jenkins: Abril – Pascua y Viajes | April – Easter and Travelling

    ¡Hola!

    Ahora he estado aquí por más de la mitad de mi estancia en Valencia, y me siento emocionado y nervioso al mismo tiempo. Se acercan mis exámenes en mayo y junio, y definitivamente ha aumentado mi carga de trabajo en la Universidad, por lo que estoy pasando mucho tiempo estudiando y preparándome. A pesar de esto, estoy emocionado por el desafío y por ver cuánto he avanzado desde que comencé mis estudios aquí.

     

     

     

    Fuera de la Universidad, me he divertido el mejor clima de la primavera, y me ha dado la oportunidad de disfrutar al máximo de actividades al aire libre, como correr por la mañana en el jardín del Turia y disfrutando la playa.

    Uno de los puntos destacados de las últimas semanas fue la Pascua. En España, esta se celebra a mayor escala que en el Reino Unido, así que tuve casi dos semanas libres, lo que me dio una gran oportunidad para visitar algún lugar nuevo en España. Pasé una semana en Alicante explorando las ciudades costeras de Jávea y Denia, y mi familia también vino a visitarme. Disfruté probando nuevos alimentos como el pulpo seco, una especialidad de la zona.

    También he comenzado un nuevo pasatiempo: Jiu-jitsu. Siempre me ha interesado las artes marciales, y cuando vi que un gimnasio local ofrecía clases, decidí probarlo. Ha sido una experiencia desafiante pero gratificante para aprender nuevas técnicas y mejorar. He asistido a clases de dos a tres veces cada semana durante un mes, y me gustaría continuarlo cuando regrese a inglaterra.

    San Bartolomé de Jávea

    Estas últimas semanas han estado ocupadas pero satisfactorias, y espero con ansias el resto de mi tiempo aquí en Valencia. Desde el exigente trabajo en la escuela hasta las numerosas actividades de ocio y exploración.

    Hello!

    Now that I have come up to halfway through my time in Valencia, I find myself feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. With my exams coming up in May and June, the workload at school has definitely increased, and I am spending a lot of time studying and preparing for them. However, I am also looking forward to the challenge, and to seeing how far I have come since starting my studies here.

    Outside of University, I have been making the most of the better weather that comes with Spring, and the sunny weather has given me the opportunity to enjoy things on a whole new level, From Morning runs in the Jardin del  Turia and time spent enjoying the beach.

    One of the highlights of the past few weeks has been Easter. In Spain, this holiday is celebrated on a much larger scale than in the United Kingdom, so I had almost two weeks off of University, which gave me a great opportunity to visit somewhere new within Spain. I stayed in Alicante for a week, exploring the coastal cities of Jávea and Dénia, and my family also came to visit me. I enjoyed trying new foods, like “Pulpo Seco” – octopus which is air dried on beaches, a specialty of coastal towns.

    I have also started a new hobby – Jiu-jitsu. I have always been interested in martial arts, and when I saw a local gym offering classes, I decided to give it a try. It has been a challenging but rewarding experience learning new techniques and improving. I have been attending classes two to three times a week for just over a month now, and I plan to continue once I return to England.

    All in all, these past few weeks have been busy but fulfilling, and I am looking forward to the rest of my time here in Valencia. From the challenging coursework at school to the many opportunities to enjoy and explore.

  • Max Jenkins: ¡Las Fallas! – Valencia, Spain – March 2023

    ¡Hola y bienvenidos a mi segundo informe!

    Llevo más de un mes aquí en Valencia y he logrado adaptarme y acostumbrarme a la vida aquí y a mis estudios en la universidad. Aunque es muy difícil tener clases en español, ¡ya puedo ver que he mejorado mi español!

    ¡Las Fallas también han comenzado! Tuve la oportunidad de ir a ver la “Macrodespertà” en la mañana del primer día de las Fallas. los Falleros lanzaron petardos y caminaron por todo el distrito de Ciutat Vella, dirigiéndose hacia la plaza de ayuntamiento, donde el evento terminó con un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales y un terremoto especial, que utilizaron un tipo especial de fuegos artificiales para sacudir el suelo y hacer que se sintiera como un terremoto. Este fue un impresionante comienzo de las festividades, ya que hubo mucho humo y ruido durante toda la mañana en el distrito de Ciutat Vella y el resto de Valencia.

    Luego visité un evento con amigos en la noche llamado “La Crida”, que tuvo lugar en las Torres de Serrano, este fue el evento principal para señalar el inicio de las Fallas. Antes de los fuegos artificiales, se tocó mucha música española e inglesa famosa, también hubo bandas valencianas con instrumentos de metal y tambores que tocaron música. Finalmente, comenzaron los fuegos artificiales, que fueron disparados al ritmo de la música. Lo que fue tan impresionante de esta experiencia fue en realidad la gran cantidad de personas que estaban allí para celebrarlo.

    Estos eventos me han hecho esperar con muchas ganas el fin de las Fallas y hasta ahora, he encontrado que las Fallas me han parecido una experiencia muy interesante, ya que nunca había experimentado un festival nacional de esta magnitud, puesto que el Reino Unido no tiene una festividad que dure tantos días. Ha sido realmente divertido, y he disfrutado la experienciea de esta cultura diferente hasta ahora.

     

    Hello, and welcome to my second report!

    I have now been here in Valencia for over a month and have been able to settle in and get used to life here and my studies at university. Whilst it is very difficult to have classes in Spanish, I can already tell that I’ve improved my Spanish!

    Las Fallas has also begun! I have had the opportunity to go and see the “Macrodesperta” in the morning on the day las Fallas started, where Falleros walked through all of Ciutat Vella throwing firecrackers, headed towards the “plaza de ayuntamiento”, where the event finished with a fireworks show and a “terremoto especial”, that used special fireworks to shake the ground and make it feel like an earthquake. This was an impressive start to the festivities, as there was so much smoke and noise all throughout the morning in the old town and the rest of Valencia.

    Then I visited an event with friends in the evening called “La Crida” which happened at the Torres de serrano, this was the main event to signify the start of las Fallas. Before the fireworks, there was lots of famous Spanish and English music being played, and valencian bands who played music with brass instruments and drums. Finally, they began the fireworks, which were fired to the tune of music. What was so amazing about this experience was actually the massive amount of people there to celebrate it.

    These events have made me look really forward to the Finish of las Fallas, as so far, I have found las Fallas to be a really interesting experience, as I have never experienced a national festival of this scale, as the United Kingdom does not have a holiday that goes on for such a large period of days. It has been really fun, and I have enjoyed experiencing this different culture so far.

  • Max Jenkins: Mi Primer Informe en Valencia – February 2022

    Después de la renovación de mi pasaporte, el proceso para adquirir mi visado, la matriculación en la universidad extranjera y mis cursos, y mucha más administración, finalmente pude ir a Valencia.

    Estaré en Valencia por seis meses; gracias a la universidad que asisto en Inglaterra (la universidad de Sheffield Hallam). Me ofreció la oportunidad para estudiar a la Universidad de Valencia por un semestre.

    Después de mi vuelo, que duró casi tres horas, llegué a Valencia. Al inicio me quedé en un hotel por dos días. Durante estos primeros días, caminé por la ciudad y vi la Seu de Valencia, el Mercado de Colón y Probó la comida española, mientras que practicaba español.

    Luego me mudé a mi apartamento, que está ubicado en una zona estudiantil muy cerca de plataformas del metro y el tranvía, así que es muy fácil para ir al centro de la ciudad y además la playa. El domingo, fui a un restaurante cerca de la paya para comer paella con amigos. Aprendí que la paella valenciana normalmente incluye carne como conejo o pollo y la alcachofa. También la próxima semana significó el inicio de mis estudios, y estaba nervioso para ir a una nueva universidad en un país diferente.

    Ahora he recibido mi horario y comencé mis estudios a la universidad. Es muy diferente en relación de mis estudios en Inglaterra, porque tenía la oportunidad a elegir mis cursos, los cursos son más intensivos, ¡y todos los profesores solo hablan en español en mis clases!

    My First Report in Valencia

    After the renewal of my passport, the process to acquire my visa, the enrolment into university, the selection of my courses, and lots more admin, finally I could go to Valencia.
    I will be in Valencia for 6 months; thanks to the university I attend in England (Sheffield Hallam university). They offered me the opportunity to study at the University of Valencia for a semester.
    After my flight, which lasted almost 3 hours, I arrived in Valencia. In the beginning, I stayed in a hotel for 2 days, during these first days I walked through the city and saw the cathedral of Valencia and the Colón Market, and tried Spanish food, whilst practising Spanish.
    Then I moved into my apartment, which is located in a student area, very near to both a tram and metro platform, so it is very easy to go to both the city centre and the beach. On Sunday I went to a restaurant near the beach to eat paella with friends. I learned that Valencian paella normally includes meat like Rabbit or chicken and artichokes. Also, the next week signified the beginning of my studies, and I was nervous to go to a new university in a different country.

    Now I have received my timetable and started my studies at university. It is very different in comparison to my studies in England because I had the opportunity to choose my courses, the courses are more intensive, and all my teachers only speak Spanish in my classes!

  • Mi primer partido de fútbol español !: George Illingworth, Valencia – Jan 2020

    En los últimos meses no podía salir o viajar tanto como quería por mis tareas para la universidad. Empezaba a recibir un montón de deberes cada semana y por eso cuando podía salir o viajar dentro de valencia aproveché. 

    Soy un aficionado de Chelsea desde hace muchos años y sabía que un amigo mío iba a ir al partido de Chelsea contra valencia que tendría lugar aquí en valencia. En ese momento no quedaban muchas entradas pero,  por suerte alguien me ofreció una, para un precio muy barato. Enseguida terminé mis tareas de la universidad y sin pensar me la compré. 

    En el día del partido, en el camino al estadio, el atmósfera ya era tan buena, las calles inundaban con la afición de Chelsea y valencia. Cuando llegamos al estadio tomás y yo ya estábamos tan emocionados. Podíamos oír la porra de la afición dentro del estadio y cuando entramos la atmósfera y tamaño del estadio nos asombró.Sacamos unas fotos y nos sentamos. La vista del campo que tenía era fenomenal, no me lo podía creer! Antes de que lo supiera, se ponía la canción de la liga de campeones y salían los jugadores. ¡Enseguida me puso la piel de la gallina porque tras de tantos años de oír la canción de los campeones nunca la había oído en directo! El partido arrancó y ! qué partido era! 

    Era tan reñido, había tantos remates contra la puerta de ambos equipos. La tensión estaba tan alta y me encantó la pasión y orgullo de la afición de valencia cuando cantaba los cantos valencianos. Era clarísimo de ver cuánto a ella su equipo le importó. Cuando valencia marcó goles me sentía llamadas a levantarme y vitorear y igualmente cuando Chelsea los marcó. El partido se acabó un empate 2-2 y no podría haber esperado uno más emocionante. Fue lo mejor partido que vi en toda mi vida. ¡Una experiencia inolvidable!

    In the last few months I wasn’t able to go out or travel as much as I wanted to due to the uni work I had to do. I was receiving  a mountain of work every week and so, when I did get a chance to go out or travel within Valencia I made the most of it. I have a been a Chelsea fan for many years now and I knew that  a friend of mine was going to go to the football match Chelsea vs Valencia, which was going to take place here in Valencia. At that point there weren’t many tickets left but luckily somebody offered me one for a very cheap price. Immediately I finished doing my tasks for uni and  bought myself it without a second thought. On the day of the match, on the way to the stadium the atmosphere was already great, the streets were flooded with the fans of Chelsea and Valencia.when Thomas and I arrived at the stadium we were already very excited. We could hear the noise of the fans inside the stadium and when we entered we were amazed by the size of it and by the atmosphere. We took a few photos and then we sat down. my view of the pitch was so good I couldn’t believe it. Before I knew it they played the Champions League song and out came the players. Immediately I got goosebumps because after so many years I have never heard it in real life.  The match started, and what a match it was! It was so close and both teams had so many attempts on goal. The tension was high and I loved hearing the passion and pride of the Valencian fans when they sang their Valencian football chants. It was obvious how much their team meant to them. When Valencia scored goals I felt compelled to stand up and cheer for them and the same for when Chelsea scored too.

    The match finished a draw 2-2, and I couldn’t have asked for more!

    It was the best match that I have ever seen.  It was an unforgettable experience!

  • Livin’ the vida loca: George Illingworth, Valencia – November 2019

    Isla de Tabarca

    After being here now for  several months, Valencia really does feel like home. Off the top of my head, there is not one thing that I can complain about! Now that I have settled in, I have fallen into a good rhythm here that allows me to enjoy life as an Erasmus student but also get work done for uni. I go to the Uni during the weekdays, and in the evenings I go to events when I have time, for example going to the weekly paella night with other University of Valencia students. on Friday I normally go out with friends clubbing, and then on the weekends I either explore Valencia more or go on trips.

    The first trip I went on, was to the Island of Tabarca (aka Spain’s smallest island). I went with the coach and then took the ferry. The island was beautiful and tiny. It felt quite antiquated and I had the impression that even with the influence of tourism it hadn’t changed too much over the years. We had a tour of the island and then enjoyed swimming in the sea and also snorkelling! The weather was fenomenal and although we didn’t see that many fish it was nevertheless a really fun experience!

    I also went on another day trip, this time to Alicante. We went to the Castle, had a tour through town, and travelled further to the pink lake. The castle was incredible with 1200+ years of history: having been occupied by the British, French, and of course, the Spanish over the past millennia. The town had some beautiful little streets and the closer to the centre you went the more modern and touristy the city became. The sea looked beautiful and clear and the weather was so warm and it was obvious why Alicante is such a popular tourist destination. We then travelled another hour by coach to see the pink lagoon, a lake known for turning pink due to a pigment in the sediment. Unfortunately due to storms in the weeks before the pink was not as visible as it normally would have been. Nevertheless, the marshland was very tranquil. Our trip was made complete with an incredible sunset on the journey back.

    Isla de Tabarca

    Después de vivir aquí desde hace unos meses, Valencia se ha convertido en mi nueva casa. Sinceramente, no puedo pensar de ninguna característica de esta bonita ciudad que no me guste. Ya me he acostumbrado a vivir en España y he encontrado un buen ritmo que me viene bien y me permite disfrutar de mi vida como estudiante de Erasmus mientras que me da tiempo para estudiar para la uni. Durante la semana suelo ir a la Universidad,asistir a unos acontecimientos de diversión en donde me quedo con otros estudiantes, y el Viernes salgo con amigos a una de la multitud de discotecas o bares que hay aquí. El fin de semana me da suficiente tiempo para viajes fuera de Valencia o tiempo para explorar y conocer mejor Valencia.

    El primer viaje que hice fue a la Isla de Tabarca,conocida también como la isla menor de España. Fui con Autobús y luego con barco. La isla era pequeña y preciosa. Me pareció muy antigua y tuve la impresión de que a lo largo del tiempo la influencia del turismo había aumentado sin perjudicar a la isla. Recorrimos toda la Isla con una guia que nos explicó la historia. Después gozamos del mar y practicamos buceo con tubo. El tiempo era fenomenal y aunque no vimos tantos peces como hubiéramos querido lo pasamos muy bien!

    El próximo viaje que yo hice fue a Alicante. En primer lugar visitamos el Castillo de Santa Bárbara. En segundo lugar recorrimos la ciudad con la ayuda de una Guía. Después, teníamos tiempo libre y por fin fuimos más lejos para visitar el lago rosa.

    El Castillo de Alicante me encantó, estaba encima de la ciudad y se veía muy impresionante con vistas asombrosas sobre la ciudad y el mar. Tuvo más de 1200 años de historia y durante este milenio fue ocupado por los ingleses,los franceses y por supuesto los españoles.
    La ciudad me sorprendió con sus calles pequeñas y bonitas que indicaban el rastro de un rico pasado. Lo más moderno de Alicante era el centro, en comparación con el estilo más antiguo que se podía observar en las afueras. Además,cuando llegamos al mar nos dimos cuenta porqué Alicante es tan popular entre los turistas. El mar brillaba y era tan transparente que no me lo podía creer. Entonces, fuimos al lago rosa, famoso por su pigmento que le da la apariencia rosa, ubicado en los sedimentos del fondo del lago. Por desgracia, por las tormentas de las últimas semanas no pudimos ver el color, pero a pesar de esto, estar en los pantanos fue muy relajante y tranquilo. En el camino de vuelta terminamos nuestro viaje,mirando un atardecer sensacional, el cual admiramos y aprovechamos para sacar muchas fotos.

    Parque Gulliver

    La verdad es que no sé por dónde debería comenzar. Ya he hecho tantas cosas, es una locura! Tras mi llegada a valencia inmediatamente empecé conocer la ciudad y darme cuenta la gran riqueza de cultura y historia que tiene esta ciudad. En la primera semana visité el museo de Belles Artes. Allí ví una exposición que se trató de Pablo Picasso y su relación con el escritor Camilo Cela que me interesó mucho.También disfruté de mirar a  las pinturas por otras pintores, muchos de los fueron valencianos como Antonio Degrain y Francisco Aparici. Además algo verdaderamente especial de valencia son los parques. Luego en la semana visité los jardines reales y el Parque Gulliver.  

    Los Jardines Reales son muy bonitas y no se hacen tan concurridos como los otros espacios verdes en valencia. Adicionalmente tienen fauna y flora notable y allí ví por la primera vez un cisne negro! Por otra parte el Parque Gulliver es un lugar muy divertido y único visitar. La figura de Gulliver es una obra de architectura muy chula y original y da un atmósfera de diversión al parque. Aunque se diseñó principalmente por familias y niños no impidió que muchos adultos incluyendo yo la gozaran también. 

    El próximo día dí una vuelta por el centro de Valencia que se llama colón. Es una zona muy popular y rápidamente a través del día se hizo muy concurrido. En la plaza principal me compré unos dulces tradicionales valencianos que se llaman fartons. Se come con un vaso de la bebida favorita de los lugareños que se llama horchata. La Horchata tiene un sabor natural y muy dulce pero te sirve perfectamente refrescarte en temperaturas altas. Los Fartons saben muy ricos y los dos se complementan perfectamente. 

    Finalmente, visité unos monumentos como los torres serranos y la plaza de la vírgen. Entré en la basílica allí y la pura belleza me sorprendió complementamente. Las pinturas en el techo eran tan hermosas y me sentía como si pudiera mirar directamente al cielo a todos los santos y figuras de la biblia que fueron pintados allí. También y más curioso es que en valencia la virgen desempeña el papel más grande para los lugareños y Jesús no.

    The truth is that I have no idea where to begin. The amount of things I have already done here in Valencia is crazy! 

    Immediately after my arrival here in Valencia, I started to get to know the city and realise the huge wealth of culture and history that the city has to offer. In the first week, I visited the Museum of Fine Arts. There I saw an exhibition about the relationship between Pablo Picasso and the novelist and poet Camilo Cela, which I found to be very interesting. 

    In addition, I enjoyed looking at the paintings from other painters, many of which were by Valencians such as Antonio Degrain and Francisco Aparici. Also, one truly special thing about Valencia is the parks. Later in the week, I visited the Royal Gardens and Park Gulliver.

    The Royal Gardens are very pretty and don’t become as busy in comparison to other parks in Valencia. Moreover, Park Gulliver is a really unique and fun place to visit. The figure of Gulliver is a very cool and original work of architecture and creates an enjoyable and fun atmosphere in the park. Although it was designed primarily for families and children, it didn’t stop many adults including myself from enjoying it too.

    The next day I walked through the centre of Valencia, which is called Colon. It is a very popular and busy area and throughout the day it quickly becomes busier and busier. In the main Plaza I bought myself some traditional Valencian sweets called Fartons. They are eaten with a glass of  Horchata; a favourite amongst the locals. Horchata has a sweet, natural taste but it is perfect to refresh you on hot summer days. Fartons taste delicious and the two together complement one another perfectly.

    Finally, I visited some of the monuments such as Los Torres Serranos and the plaza of the Virgin. I entered the Basilica there and was amazed by the pure beauty of it. 

    The paintings on the ceiling were so beautiful and I felt as if I could look directly at heaven and all the saints and other figures from the bible that were painted there.

    Most interestingly, the Virgin Mary plays a larger role for Valencian Christians than Jesus does.
